  1. and some people enjoy the challenge looking for bits, and hey, the reward can be a car you rebuild can deliver 300 to 800,000km on that build if maintained. And survivability can depend on your intended usage too. If only postage to US was affordable (reciprocal even ! )- I have a hoard of EA81 heads and oil pumps spare valves, even have a few sets of pistons OS I agree with everyone the EJ is a more advanced engine, more power, more parts, more lard, probably more reliable and fuel efficient and if you can make one fit and work - even more rewarding. It is always going to be a case of do what you want, assess the info offered. I used to hate the EA82, love the EA81, but other way now and as it sits I have an EJ20 and its AWD 5MT sitting in a Brumby waiting for more motivation and investigation. The AWD 5MT from a 2.0 litre Impreza fits the trans tunnel better than EA82 five speed. The EJ looks like it belongs there. Plenty of EA81 bits in Oz for export except new oil pumps

  2. A pinhole in the hose will leak enough to prevent backflow. A 19 year old hose has likely degraded and needs to be replaced. The barb for the connection to the radiator needs to be clean and smooth so air doesn't leak there.

  3. My 2 cents. I agree with GD that there is nothing like a new engine from Subaru, but you might not need to buy a brand new block. I buy lower mileage 2.5's for anywhere from 500-$750 and then do HG, Water pump, idlers, cam o rings, timing, the works when it is out of the car. I like to her it run and prefer buying a car that was in a rear wreck so I know it was a runner. You don't say if it is automatic or stick. If it is stick, obviously do a clutch when it is easy. Obviously, if your engine has been overheated , that is bad and I wouldn't bother rebuilding that one. But you might consider one with bad heads and reuse your heads for example to bring the price down a bit of the motor. Best of luck either way you go!

  4. Also make sure the end of the overflow hose is cut at a 45 degree angle so it doesn't get sucked down to the bottom of the tank Rad cap likely suspect, make sure it's a Subaru one. Could also be a leaking connection of the hose at the radiator (I usually put a tyrap on the hose to make sure it doesn't loose vacuum.

  6. The misbehavior returned. I got a used MAF for $50 and no more misbehavior.

  7. That could play into it. Bajas are distinctive in brat reminicence, two tone, two door, bed, yellow, and some with a turbo hood. tribeca is distinctive in nothing.
