  1. I was under the impression that the bypass valve allows oil to bypass the filter in situations where oil demand is momentarily high... if that's the case and the pressure is good and the car is not pushed that hard... seems like it's a luxury that I could live without. Or am I totally confused here?
  2. That's what confuses me... the pressure is actually solid to high... it seems to have perfect pressure... when the engine is in the high rpm range, pressure needle shows about 80% of peak (I forget what the numbers are... 40is half and 80 is at the top of the gague... is that right) anyway it's up around 60 when revs are up... normal cruising pressure is at about halfway.. (40?) drops to about a quarter at idle...... (pump can't be returned... prior owner had it done shortly before we bought the car)
  3. I'm confused about if its the bypass or relief... its the ball visible when you remove the oil filter? which one is that? The pressed in collar that holds the ball is in there but somehow it got mushroomed out and let the ball escape (into an old oil filter I guess) the ball is gone, just the end of a spring is visible, how critical is it... (need to get this car back together and cash is in short supply).... was figuring that when the oil pump starts to go I can replace it with the engine in the car (buying some precious time and saving $$ is high priority)... engine is out today and needs to get back in there ASAP.... (also had an issue with wrong number of splines in the clutch kit driven plate.... got to get the right clutch plate.).
  4. Hill holders are great in the hills. Most of mine eventually go south and get disconnected but would love to have them back. Are they repairable? (they're expensive)
  5. EA 82 engine, has a relatively new oil pump (less than six months).. just did timing belts seals etc and when finishing up and changing the oil filter, noticed that the ball is missing from the relief assy. at the top of the oil filter. Question.... (really don't want to re do the belts etc and buy a new oil pump assy.) how important is that relief system and can I get away with skipping it.????
  6. hmmm I dont even know... new at this looking for a picture now OK.. not cam case. IT is the head gasket... car runs ok but power is lacking and oil is all over the place.
  7. I'm doing timing belts, crank seals etc. Trying to take care of oil leaks. The head gaskets on there now look like just form a gasket. How much of a can of worms would it be to replace the head gaskets at this time. Is it just unbolt/bolt or are there alignment & other issues that would be better left alone?
  8. Good Price! Thanks Guys. P.S. Rockauto discount code 997556878043 is good till 10 June. (put it in the "where did you hear about us box on the order window".
  9. Is there a source for the pressurized gas cylinders that hold up the tailgate on a wagon (1986) at a reasonable price?
  10. Do itashimaste! keep us informed of any progress (or problems).
  11. It's been a while, but I had a couple of noisy engines that sounded kind of like that (like I said been a while & can't remember exactly... should've put it on youtube) one was a frozen idler pulley and the other was I think the bearing on the timing belt cog/gear... you might be able to find a clue if you have someone look into the inspection hole in the front timing cover (drivers side) any problems would leave some debris/clues there. C.
  12. That thing runs pretty good. (in the video) I'm with GeneralDisorder verify. If you can, pick up a engine (cheap) in the northeast where the bodies rotted away but the engines are still good. PS ever get up north to OKU? nice little town. C.
  13. I had to chop the picture up to fit the upload specs...
  14. Dosen't somebody sell just the rubber part? I guess you're supposed to re-use the metal part? can't remember where I saw them... I could dig around if you're interested.
  15. Is that guy still selling them?
  16. Not sure which car you're dealing with, but I have spare parts & bolts for 86-7 GL wagon here in PA.
  17. I got that kit for my EA82 recently and the idlers and sprocket look great, The belts seem OK too, but they are made in China so time will tell if they will go for the full 60k. My guess is that they are shooting for the same specs as everybody else so they should be fine.
  18. Seems like nobody carries just the Clutch Alignment tool anymore... NoahDL88 I sent you a PM.
  19. If the oil pressure was ok and constant, not fluctuating, I doubt that it was the oil pump... did he replace the Idler as well as the tensioner? sounds to me like the idler bearing seized up
  20. Speaking of seats, if anybody near the eastern part of PA. needs seats I have 87 DL Sdn Front & rear seat real nice blue, free to a good home.
  21. An EA82 Engine fits real nice in one of those cheezy plastic hubcaps. The oil pan sits real nice in the center and that springy wire band holds the thing in position under the motor so you can slide the motor around on the floor and it stays in/on the hubcap. Works great on a flat cement floor.
  22. Thanks guys. (Miles, great links, thanks)
  23. I agree, at least 100k on an oil pump, but this is a new (to me) engine that had no Oil pressure gauge so I don't know what kind of pressure it was putting out and since the motor is 18yrs old even though it only had 70k/mi on it, I'm throwing in the new pump just because. I think a new oil pump with every other belt change is a good practice. That tiny hole is above the area of the gasket and seems to me like it was put there for some reason. So you don't think the rubber piggie gasket is enough? it should also have some sealant on it? Also what about the O-ring that Subaru gave me the wrong one... Is the OEM O-ring any better than just your average O-ring if it looks like the right size. can I get one from Autozone or from my box of "Universal O-ring replacement Kit" Today is Sunday so the Dealer is closed but I'd like to put it back together today...
  24. I have a new pump but the tiny hole in question is on the engine block side and before I put the new pump on I'd like to know if my suspicions are correct that that hole should not be plugged. P.S. I got the new pump from my friendly local Subaru Dealership and they gave me the wrong O-ring... Grrrr!
