Gl-10 swap
You might go through front tires at a rapid rate in front wheel drive. I had a front wheel drive '87 GL EA-82 that was hard on front tires. It was a stripper, so it didn't weigh all that much tho. Doug

Leaking water pump? Nope... HG leak!
Quidam replied to brus brother's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYea, something a lot of people don't consider with a dealer: The cost of just opening the doors every morning. It could be 2K or 4K, or whatever. Someone might then say, "Well, they're not going to get that from me". I say, there's no one twisting your arm. Doug

Engine repair question
Quidam replied to cohophysh's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX"Rebuilt Title. I have the title. Was a small fender bender when it was brand new" Here's what I thought. I don't believe "a small fender bender" recieves a "Rebuilt Title". Isn't an R title the same as "Totaled"?. "The bad. Our mechanic said it needed new head gaskets it has 200k miles on it. So we paid a small fortune to have them replaced, Along with the timing belts and dampener pulleys. It ran great for a month or so and died on us. I recently relocated several hundred miles, and I don’t have the cash to throw at it again so I am selling it." I think there is a good chance he's settled with the mechanic. You don't pay "a small fortune" to a shade tree mechanic. "Put the motor back together and drive it for another 200k." Or not. Doug

misfires
Quidam replied to wesmay's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYea, it worked for two weeks. "Sometimes the Check Engine Light illuminates because the computer detects misfires. Subaru released an improved spark plug wire set to solve the problem. The ignition coil should also be inspected for carbon tracks or short circuits between the contacts."

Hi, The fourth wire is red and at this moment, I forget how it's used. All I've ever used/needed is the three wire setup. You would have to find out what that red wire does to piggyback it to something else. No, you don't need the four wire setup to make the carb work. When you get them side by side you'll see how easy it is. Doug

Ha. He did email me and said he'd remove the Honda references on the page. You can swap your 3 pin harness with Bowl vent solenoid, AD switch, and choke wire on to the reman. If you want to swap the new Bowl vent solenoid and choke wire into your 3 pin it's easy. Just pop the pins out of the square 4 pin connector an into the 3 pin. Doug

Yea, eBay. The extra wire goes to the Anti-dieseling switch. I've reused the old AD switch in a reman before. And the old harness. Transfer the stuff around to get what you need.

Hi, That reman, ebay. I emailed just to make sure it's the carb I think it is. No response yet. I used those three on different cars and I don't think I paid more than $125.00 for any of them. One was a Justy, the others EA-82. All sold now. Doug

Hi 3crows, I've bought three reman carbs for around $100.00+. I only know of one right now, and it's $190.00 shipped. They do pop up every now and then. Doug

Engine and engine well cleaning
I use a Honda 13 hp, 4000psi pressure washer. Then a lot of compressed air to blow out the electrical, and rags to wipe it down. It will remove paint if i'm not carefull with it. Doug

Do I need a new crankshaft?
Quidam replied to walczyk's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHey, Exactly. But even if it is .0003, if he would just install the crank with new bearings and give it a spin, he'd be at a go/no go situation. If it spins freely he could just move on and forget about .0003. If needed, a good used crank can't be "that" expensive. A reman with rod and main bearings can be found for a couple hundred. Doug

Do I need a new crankshaft?
Quidam replied to walczyk's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHi, A bent crank can cause the uneven wear you're seeing. Excessive main bearing clearance on a high mileage motor can cause a bent crank. A bad harmonic balancer can too. I've never reused a truely bent crank, as they usually have other problems as well. That is, a crank that actually has binding issues when it's installed in the block with new bearings. Doug

Do I need a new crankshaft?
Quidam replied to walczyk's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHey, You're saying this EJ has 300K on it? If it does...well, does it? The crank...What you can do, could have done before you fully broke it down: With just the crank and oiled bearings in the block, spin the crank. It should spin free, and continue spinning when you take your hand off it. You may be able to see it binding, or not. Doug

Remanufactured Engines?
Quidam replied to a post in a topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHey, Before you move on from this car, consider this: You can see and drive the car, no? How much are they asking? If it checks out good by driving and looking at it, it's probably worth fair market value. They replaced the pistons so there may not be any piston slap to deal with. When you put new pistons and rings in one, the measurements of the piston ring to ring land clearance will be within OEM spec. It's the most important measurement in the motor. Say factory spec is .0012 to .003 with a max allowed of say .0059. The .0012 to .003 is considered good as new, and it is. .003 to .0059 is rebuilt territory. At least take it for a drive? HTH Doug

Remanufactured Engines?
Quidam replied to a post in a topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHi, Note that it's $1995.00 and no where do they claim it's "remanufactured". Doesn't mean it's not a good engine tho, I don't know. They do at least use new pistons. I've seen "remanufactured" ones sell for $3 K plus, with a 7 year, 70,000 mile warranty. Rear engine adaption of Sooby driveline
Hey, Yea, it's not an EF-12, but EF engines were used in the same trucks. See how the spark plug wires are on the rear side? I would think the EF would be mounted the same. I'll see if I can find some more. And I'm talking about the 4WD models. Doug The Subaru Sumo, known as the Libero in European markets apart from the UK and Norway, also known as the Domingo in the Japanese market, was microvan produced from 1983 to 1998. In Sweden, it was known as the Columbuss. It was also called the Subaru E10 and Subaru E12 respectively due to the size of the engine. The Sumo is the Sambar with extended front and rear bumpers and a larger engine borrowed from the Subaru Justy. Because of these modifications, it doesn't conform to kei car regulations, which stipulate the maximum dimensions of the vehicle and the maximum engine displacement requirements, which then determine the vehicle tax to be paid. It was launched with the option of four-wheel drive and powered by 1.0- and 1.2-litre 3-cylinder EF engines based on those used in the Subaru Justy although in the van they were rear mounted. Somewhat unusual for a microvan, the 1200cc Sumo could be ordered with selectable 4WD, operated via a gear stick imbedded button. In normal driving conditions the rear wheels only were driven, there being no central differential to allow highway driving in 4WD mode. In 1994 , Subaru's Full Time 4WD was added to the options list with the ECVT transmission only and a viscous coupling. An oil cooler was installed on European versions to better facilitate light duty towing. Hey Nipper, The two axle stubs like your 2WD would drive the rear wheels either way it was mounted. The output shaft for 4WD of course points to the rear. In these trucks/vans the engine would be flipped or different case/shaft parts installed to point the shaft to the front for four wheel drive.

Rear engine adaption of Sooby driveline
Hey Nipper, AH...I just found a pic. This one is a four cylinder tho. For 4 wheel drive, the shaft would have to point towards the front.
-
Rear engine adaption of Sooby driveline
Hi Nipper, ? To get the output shaft to point to the front, you'd have to have a different trans case, with the shaft pointing the other way... I'll think about it, but it's either one or the other. Flip it, or different trans. parts. Doug
-
Rear engine adaption of Sooby driveline
I was thinking about this and my thoughts turned to the Justy. Because if I understand it right, it's done from the factory with the rear engined stuff overseas. Flip the Justy engine and trans 180* and install it in the back, the output shaft now points to the front... Edit:The Sambar for one. "1994 saw a full model change with a body similar to the Domingo, with the EF12 Subaru EF engine The EF is an automotive engine made by Subaru, introduced in 1984 for the Subaru Justy. It is a water-cooled straight-3 engine with a belt-driven single overhead camshaft, and a chain driven balance shaft... three cylinder engine's displacement increased to 1200cc and SOHC borrowed from the Subaru Justy Subaru Justy Since 1984, Subaru has marketed the Justy, a subcompact hatchback, either manufacturing the vehicle itself or marketing a rebadged version by others... . A maximum seating capacity of seven was possible.
