  1. Scott, I would be honored to ride with you. Mark me down for a for sure thing. I will definitely be there. If you get stuck, I won't help push you out, but I will be sure to catch it on video. Rollie
  2. Scott, It would be a shame not to take the same trail we tried the last two trips. Looking at the map, it looks like Pat's trail consists of overlapping routes mixed with Quad and 4x4 trails where eventually the 4x4 trail turns to the right and becomes Upper/Mainline/Expressway. It would be good to confirm that, as I'm really looking forward to running the same trail and going further then we have in the past. It's like an unconquered challenge that we can't let get the best of us. Rollie
  3. My Dad's alternator just failed so I lent him mine off of my 88 GL Wagon. I'm thinking of replacing mine with one that puts our more amps. Does anyone know if higher amp units are readily available and what price I may expect to pay for one? Thanks, Rollie
  4. Scott in Bellingham has a set of 15 inch Pugs on his own car and a set of metrics. They look identical and would be hard to tell the difference without measuring. I believe Scott plans to melt down the metrics to add to his aluminum ingot supply. The 15's are available out there if you look around a bit. I would not reccomend you get the metrics unless you find a sure thing deal on tires you like. Rollie
  5. I'm restarting my list. Pull the welded diff out of the blue bomber Swap welded diff into rear of my car Start design for installing front diff and transfercase while maintaining a 6" lift, includes raising the engine higher then stock. Engine running problems: Unbolt exhaust pipe and remove muffler from system to see if it helps clear up rich fuel build up problem. Scott, it looks like you may have a new list for yourself, White car broken timing belt?
  6. Sarge, Just mark, drill, knockout, and pound or press in the new studs. It was just an extra pain for me, because I had already changed the first four out using other Subaru studs, picked up the toyota wheels and then found out I couldn't get the proper lugnuts with the Subaru thread pitch, so then I had to remove all 6 on each hub again and put in all new ones. By the time I had knocked out and pounded in new studs a couple times, I found that some of my new studs fit the holes a little looser then they should and some even spun when I tightened the lugnuts, so I added a tackweld on the inside of few to hold them from spinning. I just like to do things the hard way. Rollie
  7. I have the exact toyota wheels you show above on my 88 Wagon. They actually stick out about another half inch more then the 15" Peugeots which you mentioned. Another pain with using the stock Toyota Alloys, is they require special toyota lugnuts which are a different thread then the stock Subaru, so when you do a 6 lug hub conversion you will have to replace all 6 studs on each hub. I'm running the 27" Radial Swampers, and have a 6" lift, which works well for my car but it does throw more mud and rocks onto the body. Rollie
  8. One more thought. Since a Subaroo does not have a full frame, a lift kit will give you more clearance underneath in some situations. In particular the center of the car between the front and rear axles is higher allowing you to drive over sharper ridges without high centering. The following car would have driven right over the shown obstacle if it had a 4" lift: Rollie
  9. I would like to be kept informed as it gets closer. It would be fun to show off our rigs and possibly show up in a magizine. Rollie
  10. Here's a photo with a video link below it: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10847&cat=500 Some people have reported trouble playing the above Mpeg file, so here is a Windows Media File of the same thing. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10882&cat=500&ppuser=16165 Let me know oif either or none of the videos work for you. Rollie
  11. Look, It will even fit between trees Walker Valley 4-22-06 I'm not sure how to link directly to Videos, but here's a link to my photo page showing the actual video where the above picture came from: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=10847&cat=500 Rollie
  12. Hmmm. Coolant temp sensor could be it. I do notice a high idle problem, somtimes as high as 3000 rpm. Adjusting the throttle stop down to the limit where the butterfly is all the way closed still results in a 2000+ rpm idle when hot. Is this the same sensor used to run the dash temp gauge, because the gauge seems to go up and down normally with temperature? Where is the above mentioned temp sensor located? Thanks for the continued input. When we get this one solved the rest of the engine should run just about perfect considering all the new parts and adjustments I've been doing. Rollie
  13. I'm sure this has been answered numerously, but I'm guessing from your comment, that the ring and pinion can not be flipped over in the Subaru front transaxle. If it could then it would be a great beginning for a rear engine Subaru powered 4x4. However for a 2 wheel drive, you could mate the Sube engine with a VW transaxle. Just thinking Rollie
  14. Thanks guys, for your comments. I'm trying to track down a good used O2 sensor for cheap or free and then I will try it to see what happens. It is a one-wire device. I'm also looking for a computer to try. It's an 88 GL Wagon 4x4 built in 12/87 Computer says: 22611 AA392 MECF-022 4E 42 Meanwhile I just keep driving. Fuel mileage has been hovering around 20mpg after adjusting the odometer reading for running 27" Swampers. Rollie
  15. OK, Here's my puzzle. Components: Low mileage EA82 Motor from Japan, SPFI, everything stock New plugs, rotor, wires, cap, gaskets, filters, belts. Symptoms: Fuel runs too rich at mid rpm range 2500-3500 Low rpm seems ok Motor seems to flood out when given full throttle at mid range. When accelerating, it has more power at 1/2 throttle then full Fuel injector seems to be pumping too much gas. Occasionally it will almost die from richness and emits black smoke out the exhaust. What I've done so far: Replaced throttle body-fuel injector twice with other known good ones. Includes all the electrical devices attached to intake system, throttle postion sensor, air flow sensors etc. Replaced plastic/rubber intake ducting, all clear and firm. Checked intake route into air filter, all clear. Blowned out all fuel lines back to the tank. Checked timing belt, timing is correct. Checked cylinder compression, all are good. Replaced electric fuel pump with known good one. Ignition timing set correctly. Checked inside of catalytic converter, no restrictions. Still exactly the same problem, nothing I did made a difference. Things I haven't done yet: Check muffler for restrictions or clogging Check or replace sensor on Cat, What effect does it have? Replace Computer, Why would it be the problem? At this point I'm open to any suggestions you might have. I'm even williing to try something that doesn't make sense. Any Suggestions? Thanks Rollie
  16. Hey Zap, You should of turned around and followed us. We were in a 4 car caravan from Bellingham headed to Walker Valley. 1st car - Scott's White 87 Wagon 2nd car - Andy's Red EA81 Hatch 3rd car - Rollie's Silver/Purple/Red 88 Wagon 4th car - Mosiah's Yellow EA81 Wagon We met up with Noah in Mt Vernon and had a great time. Cars got a few new bumps and bruises, but they all drove home in one piece. Rollie
  17. Here's a quick picture I got from my camera. Most of the good action shots are on video and may be extracted later. I tried to get a line up with all 5 cars, but for some reason Mosiah wasn't in the group shot.
  18. That is so funny. I am the other Noob that asked the exact question 6 hours before this one. I am so glad I wasn't the 2nd one. I was really perplexed and even ran around town all day, popping my hood open at every store and disconnecting the battery. I had no clue that switch even existed. Welcome to the club Rollie
  19. Thanks guys That is exactly what it was. On my car, it's a little black switch located on top of the steering column with a little light symbol. I've never even noticed it before. I must of bumped it when I was wiping the dust of the dash or something. You wouldn't believe how many times I've had to pop the hood and remove or replace the battery cable in the last 24 hours. This site is great !! Rollie
  20. Yesterday I had a crazy thing happen to my 88 GL Wagon. I got in and drove normally, but when I stopped and then turned off the ignition, the taillights and front marker lights stayed on. I played around with the light switch on the end of the turn signal switch and the ignition switch, but no combination seems to shut them off. With the light switch in the on position which is where I usually leave it, the headlights come on and off with the ignition switch just like they are supposed to, but the taillights always stay on. The turn signals, stoplights and 4-way flashers seem to work just fine. I've got a couple of shop manuals with wiring diagrams, but I haven't looked in them yet. I figured I would ask around just in case someone out there has a clue about what may be happening. For now, I've been unhooking the battery cable every time I'm not using the car. Thanks Rollie
  21. Hi guys, I plan to be there, but I'm not sure if my Soob will be ready for wheelin. Actually that may be a good thing as it would free me up to take videos. If any of you have seen Scott's video on the last Walker Valley trip, I did most of the shooting. Ok here's my ideas. Let me know what you think. I would like to get some really good footage of the wheelin, make up playable DVDs which I can copy and give one to everybody who participates. What I'm thinking would make it even greater is if you want to be included is to provide me with some basic information about your vehicle and your name so we can include it in the scrolling credits and also help me to give better commentary as I shoot. On the last video I mistakenly referred to Brian as Dave when I was talking about his Hatch. Also, I plan to use either only your first name or your screen name which ever you prefer and not fully identify you anywhere on the video to help maintain security or privacy. The end product should be pretty impressive. I've got some new tools on my computer which allows me to add Text, Music, Stills and various video files and could even add any pictures you may take and want added. It should be a lot of fun. How's this idea sound to you? I'm willing and ready if you want. Rollie
  22. I've built up many different vehicles over the years and it is almost always the same story. Given time, more money is spent then the vehicle is worth. Typically we start out with a vehicle of little or moderate worth, and then just because we already have it we decide to fix it up and start spending thousands but only increasing the cars worth by hundreds. It is definitely not a money making investment. And then when we decide it's time to move on, we sell the car for a third of what we spent, buy another one and repeat the cycle again. What this has taught me, although you would not guess I've learned anything as you observe me repeat the same pattern again, is that you are money ahead to make the original purchase by buying the most complete car you can afford that approaches the vehicle you plan to build. The challenge with that is we don't have a pile of money sitting there waiting to spend, but for some reason we can continually spend a little at a time and it all adds up to more. If we can somehow beat this system and get more bang for the buck, that's my goal. And Oh yeah, we are having a lot of fun doing it. Just my thougnts Rollie
  23. dneufeld, Where did you put the radiator? My 75 looks like about the same baja body kit as yours. I like the way the engine fits in there. Where in BC are you? I'm about 20 miles south of the border near Bellingham. I may be interested in taking a closer look at it as I'm thinking of doing a similar conversion. Rollie
  24. If you have a CB, that would work even beter. Coordinate a channel and we will be looking for you.
