Would the U joints be turning in 4wd though? (I honestly don't know) -
I took my newly acquired 84 wagon for a spin last night. I know the pax front axle is shot, there isn't even much of a boot left on it. Tight turns, it makes all the noise in the world - obviously it needs a new front axle. I noticed the rear end is making a lot of clunking though. I mentioned this in another thread too, and some of you thought it might be a rear axle. As I was driving around, I put it in 4WD and the noise certainly got louder, leading me to think yes, it needs a new rear axle too, but when I got home, I inspected both rear axles, and couldn't see any obvious signs of failure. The boots were both intact and I didn't see any grease leaking out from them. Any other ideas here? Also, not sure if this helps, but when I put it in 4wd, I could not get the car around the roundabout on my street. I had to straighten out the wheel and put it in reverse! Thanks, Jordan

New to me 84 Wagon
seattlelegacy replied to seattlelegacy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the responses, guys. As for the backfiring issue, I'll run some SeaFoam through the carb, and maybe pour the rest in the fuel tank or crankcase. I'll also look at the timing (as soon as I find a link, I'm guessing the Haynes or FSM will have an excellent description on how that's done - I'm a NOOB). As for the front axle, I'll either enlist the help of edrach (though I'm not sure if it will EVER stop raining! - thanks for the offer, we'll be in touch) or give it a shot myself. Is there a good link for that? I didn't even think of the need for new rear half shafts. Crap. Got to park it in the garage tonight and throw the dehumidifier in the front to let it run all night. Poor things been sitting in the rain for months without being driven. EDIT: I just now found the writeups on axle changing. Seems like it should be a non-event. This board is a frickin' wealth of information. -
So, I just brought it home. I had seen it a couple times before, each time at night. That may have been a mistake. There were a couple suprises, but no deal breakers. Its an 84 4x4 d/r 4sp with 208K. It may need a new starter in time. It clicks a couple times before turning over. It starts and runs. I paid 350. - The body isn't as clean as I thought. There was a busted left front signal, dent in the drivers side rear door, and about three dents in the hood. - I noticed it backfired a couple times. Its been a while since I've worked on a carbed engine. Any suggestions here? - Sadly, when I first looked at the car, I didn't notice the torn RF cv joint boot. After driving it, I also noticed it pulls a bit. The axle will probably need to be replaced. I checked the haynes manual, and it says that should only be done at a shop!!?!?!?. This can't be done in my garage with a standard set of tools? Any reccomendations for an axle? - The car came with a folder that had the factory reciepts since new, a factory service manual and the haynes manual. SCORE! Then, as I was looking through the papers, I noticed the car had a rebuilt engine put in it at 110K!! SCORE AGAIN. So the current engine has just under a 100K. I don't even know if the seller knew this... Sweet. - There is a loud clunking sound from the rear end. It seems to happen when turning corners and going over bumps. Not sure of the source and will investigate further at a later date. That's it so far. Any suggestions to address the above issues is appreciated. Maybe this summer I'll order a lift. wOOt!!! Jordan

I read the whole thing, top to bottom. Lots of info for people that lifted em, but nothing on stock. If it is there, I missed it. -

If I get that GL I'm pursuing, what's the biggest wheel/tire combo I can put on it without lifting it and trimming fenders? I have a feeling the answer is "whatever's on there right now", but just wanted to double check. Jordan -

There's an ORV park out by nine mile. Been there once, mostly motorcycles. -
84 Wagon - Should I buy it?
seattlelegacy replied to seattlelegacy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Looks like I might own a 3rd subie. I'll go to p/u tomorrow. The only deal breaker would be if the car doesn't run when jumped. I have to spring for a starter and battery. -

SO, The car looked pretty clean at first look. I immedietly looked below the front doors by the front wheel wells. Minimal to small amounts of small rust spots. By no means a rust bucket. Rest of body was clean. Battery was dead, would not start. Also needs new starter, but allegedly runs like a top when started and will start with current starter, just need a little coaxing. Lifted up front floor mats - moisture under mats (mold on pax side). Unsure of source. Car has reciepts since new. Always in WA. I'm thinking 300 bucks in current condition. 85 bucks for a starter and 40 for a battery making it a 425 dollar car, conditional on it starting if jumped. WHAT DO YOU THINK? if I'm gonna make this offer, I'd prefer to do it soon. Thanks guys. Jordan P.S. possible off road/lift candidate too. Oh, and it IS a 4sp man. -

Flowmastered - I like the way you think. I might just show up with a few cases of beer, 400 bucks and nothing in my sock! We'll see. I'll probably do a drive by first just to see what my general impression is prior to showing a lot of interest. Jordan -

The starting issue is such that it occasionally just clicks when attempting to start it. So, I'm guessing its a wiring/starter issue, not a matter of getting it to turn over. Based on his explaination, it will start if it turns over. As far as rust, I'll check and see. The tranny issue - I'm guessing he's just wrong. Or he thinks reverse is the 5th gear, LOL. 85sub4x4- the smoking issue on our 85 actually seems to have gotten a bit better on its own. The coolant level isn't changing, so I don't think its a cracked head. The smoke appears to be an oil issue. The PCV valve is probably original. It probably needs rings and seals, but in its current condition it always has clean oil, lol.
