well its an 86, second, the "cap" or black cover part on top of it looks as if its been taken off (i dont think it should have been) and well it was siliconed back on, second, while its running, or when it did run, i could wiggle the wires (plug) and it would jump and bog down. now if i plug it in, and start it, it will sound good for a second or so, and then it will bog down and eventually die. right before it does die though, i pull out the plug and it begins purring again, no probs. im not using any electrical gadget gizmo things, (unfortunately, but either the plug or whole assembly is shot. whadya think? without ihe plug in, it would limp and bog when driving but with it in it wont idle, the responce sucks, and im pretty sure that it doesnt run to full potential with the pooey one thats in now.

gettin annoyed!! help??
subawoohoo replied to subawoohoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
farting arround is just a term i use for driving, putting and doodling arround in,on and with my car. the car has a little over 184,000 miles, she was running fine. im not exactly sure why its been acting up. it MAY be (i had a post a few days ago about my turbo squealing it turned out to be an exhaust leak) i tore it down and tightened the bolts on the flanges and the squeal went mostly away (missing a stud). i dont think its the intake plenum piping, because im pretty sure its on there better than it was before. again i dont know waht started it so im drawing blanks. the plugs were fine, a light greyish brown.it donesn't affect it warm or cold, so it could be the filter as its loss of power and hesitation but im thinking its vacume or emmisions. besides the gas smell is pretty much gone now. and no puddles other than PS fluid. and no smoke, that im aware of. where is that thread on how to scan the ecu? i havnt yet, any tips on how or what to do. i understand the blinking light sequences and all that but i dont even know where the thing is. lol. thanks for the help, im sure i coulld give more clues but im tired and im on the clock (school) well thanks again for the help and ill talk to y'all later. tyler -
im getting flustered. lol. ive been farting arround in my 86 gl10 turbowagon, and now, when i start it up it wont idle, when it does, it is usually about 550- 600 rpms. the throttle response is lousy (it will lightly hesitate and putter when reving it) and it seems to not have the power it should. any ideas on the problems? it used to idle high, now it wont idle at all!! occationally a few weeks ago, it left me stranded by not starting at all. (strong gas smell) its really bugging me so any ideas would be greatly appriciated. i checked the PCV and it was ok, i cant find any vacume leaks, and on a slightly different note, i dont have any suction! i checked the (vacume advance?) on the distributor, the hose, and it had very little suction, and the same on all other hoses in the engine bay. i dont know what i could be missing, EGR maby? thanks tyler

ok very helpful, now all i need is money. goin for a job tomorrow woohoo! kinda. well thanks and ill give you a holler if i have any other questions. take care tyler

i took my car to school today, afterwards she took a while to get goin. then later, after bowling a bit, i got out and it woudnt start, (smelt strongly of gas). anyway it needed pushstarted. i havnt got the money for a tune up but i would still like more opinions if available. also this might be on a different note but when i got home, i let it idle, and it started bubbling out of my overflow container. it wasnt overheating so what, cracked head or gasket? and will it hurt to run it if it is a gasket or head? also, smokes now near the turbo. little problems are just popping up everywhere, i just need to rebuild the damn thing, thanks if you can help me out for the time being. thanks tyler

ok sweet, now i know its doable, i didnt wanna butcher my car and not be able to fit the engine and or wiring in there. well thank you for all answers and opinions, if you have anymore feel free to tell me. thanx tyler

so you saying that if i use any of the trannys that you mentioned, i can use all my suspention components. thats what im really worried about, because i dont want to re-design the whole front end, im up for the challenge and can take the work. will the stock axles fit or will i need ea82s OR will i have to get cusom ones made? if the donor car has a digital dash, or any dash for that matter, what wiring will be needed to make it work? I wont want power windows, or doorlocks so that i can weed out but as for the dash and guages and whatnot.? what will be the diferences? can you think of any other problems i might encounter. again im mainly concerned about axles. i will hope to use a D/R 5 speed, or a S.R 5 speed, either one will be NA. will the stock axles fit, and/or hold up to the power or will i need to use ea82 axles? also will the above mentioned trannys bolt up to the engine no probs? thanks for the info, i checked out the trashwagons and 78turbobrats mods as well. very helpfull. thanks again tyler

The above dream is something thats been cooking in my little head for a few months now. I have a 86 gl10 turbo, and even with it hauling its chubby azz arround, it still flys for an old lady. (186,000) i also have a 80 hatch, 4 speed ea71. its tranny is a slushbox and the engine, although in very great shape, isnt exactly enough. so has an ea82t - '80 (first gen i believe) transplant ever been done. havnt found any seaching. the car would be used for mostly rally type driving. what would be involved. since the stock axles wont work, is the width of the first gen close enough to the ea82 to be able to swap out tranny and axles? im not exactly sure if their hubs etc.. parts are interchangeable? by the way both cars are ARIZONA cars, almost PERFECT condition  HAHA dont hate.j/k im sure ill need crossmembers and such. also the swap would be only done if there was a donor car sitting by. no parts gathering. but my main questions are would this swap be feasable without tearing out frame and structural parts to make it fit. basically bolt on with minor improvising?? ive heard of the ea81 swap, but im likin the turbo 82 so far . hope i didnt waste any time with the ?s but , if i did, oh well. J/K lol thnx and ttyl. tyler

calebz- which problem you refering to? yes it is turbo (i though all gl10s were) anyway, do you mean that all FI cars idle high, or smoke and putter? :-p btw, it rarely hits 2000 rpms at idle, it has, but it is usually at about 1700 rpms. im really not all that concerned with the idle, as it seems to go away or die down after a few moments, but the smoking, gas and puttering are kinda making me think. like i said it goes away too and when i did drive it with it puttering, it just hopped, and spit and blew smoke untill it cleared up. to me, it sounds like the plugs or wires, but why does it clear up, and only act up right when its started? thanks for all the "cents" lol tyler
-
humm maby i need to think before i type? eh? lol well that sounds right, that would explain puttering and gas smell. but i really didnt think that it would run at all, or even as well as it does, only on two cylinders. ive heard of prople nusing their cars home on two cylinders so i guess its possible. On just another note why does my car idle so high, depending on the morning, it can idle as high as 2000 rpms. if i blip the gas a couple times it will gradually drop. a few hundred at a time. is this a quick warm up kind of like the "cold start up" mazda used on the rx7? because it will fall after its warmed up, when fully warmed up she will idle at 1100 - 950 rpms. but i will check on plugs and wires. thnx. tyler

hey all, in my '86 gl10, when its started up, it runs, but it putters and hesitates, it smokes a bluish smoke out from the exhaust. also, it doesnt smell like oil, it smells like gas. after it idles and warms up, it runs fine. also occationally when its started up it will run, but right when its in gear and going it will begin the puttering fit. is it a choke or something getting stuck? just wondering if this is a common problem. maby a known defect. ok thanks all, look forward to a responce. tyler.

subarurx - how loud of a cry are you talking about? now that i think of it, that does sound like it could be a possibility. afterall it is only during high boost and the turbo does seem to be doing fine. tomorrow i will tear it apart and check all hoses and fittings, hopefully that is the problem, that noise is driving me batty. also the car will be taking a long distance trip and if we plan to be cruizin on the interstate, i really intend not to have that noise. also it does seem to have a leak somewhere, intake or vacume, ill do some tests later, but hopefully. ill give it a shot.

i guess ill just have to fidget arround with it as usual, i was just hoping that this was a common "gateway" problem before total meltdown. ok well im off to "play." thanks anyway.

when im driving my 86 gl10 turbowagon, at about 3800 rpms and up, in every gear, it will squeal pretty badly.(not belt, im guessin the turbo) its basically only when accelerating, when i release the accelerator, it goes away. so does my turbo need rebuilt? any other options? other than that the car runs and drives great! thanks, tyler.

trippy trip (and more)
subawoohoo replied to subawoohoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that does sound like it could be the prob. is there any way to clean the contacts by removing the dash? meanwhile ill give the grounding a shot, thanks caleb ttyl tyler. -
hey, on my '86 gl10, (didgidash) the gas, and temp guage as well as the trip computer are speratically acting up. occationally, the gas guage will show full, then later ill catch it just near empty, and it will hold there for a while (not sloshing arround.) the same goes for the temp, it will show about normal then, at the same time the gas guage acts up, it will show no temp at all. as for the trip guage, it will not do anything except look good. (no lights. buttons do nothing. completely useless.) then, a while later, ill look over and it will be working fine. im not getting this, its really annoying me. i thought i punctured my gas tank when i saw the guage while off roadin. lol so , has anyone else had this problem? some sensor? loose wiring? ugh, where to start? thanks, tyler.

ok so is the leone? basically the same as the gl10 (same engine)? at power-auto-parts.com, the parts are good quality right? if so, good prices! umm, is there anything else i should keep in mind when rebuilding? any ea82t "snags" that generally occur? any other info. if not thank you all, very helpful!
-
well i really dont mind the work involved, in fact i like it, and my time is, well i have plenty of it. ok ive searched a little more and i still havnt picked my route. but thats ok, i still need to gather some money up. im thinkin that when the time comes ill just ask them and compare prices. thanks for all the info.
-
i've checked out there site before, but i havn't contacted them. when im good and ready to buy ill check them out i guess. thanks q man. does anyone know a good source for the parts, for "piecing together." any individual places, with good parts and service will be helpfull. thanks again.
-
ok, ive seached, and all i found were duplicates of my question, with no real answers. lol, well anyway, ill be in the market for a engine rebuild kit for my ea82t. does anybody know a good quality kit that will allow me to rebuild. basicaly just bearings, rings, and gaskets.(re-ring kit) where can i find one of these, ive searched and have found a lot of ea81 kits, but none for the ea82t. any help will be appriciated, thanks.

DIGIDASH reliability?????

DIGIDASH reliability?????
subawoohoo replied to subawoohoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the fuse was already fried when i got the car. i replaced it and the little sparks from the white wire didnt fry it, dont think it was strong enough to. the car ONLY runs WITH the little homemade fuel pump wire. without it the pump doesnt pump. i have a multimeter, but now i already know that power is being drawn when the car is off. last night i charged up a good battery, put it in and disconected the alternator completely. it DIDNT drain. now all i need to know is; 1.) is it the white wire grounding out somewhere/ or not grounded (not sure) , 2.)is the fuesable link box messed up, 3.)or is there any other way that the alternator and/or wires conected could be draining the battery. again it only drains when the alternator is connected. any ideas on what it could be? im going to reconect my fuel pump ground wire, because that wasnt the problem. i hate electrical
