  1. ok i was pondering that problem, with back pressure up through the lines and braking the front/rear brake, i do agree with MorganM in that a quick jab arround a corner while applying the gas(like i intend to), not brake wouldnt lock up all 4's. and btw,to clear it up, if the plumbing wasn't FL-RR and FR-RL would locking up the rears cause the fronts to lock up because of the differential and tranny? ALL talk, thanks you for the warnings and legal issue. and yes if i do complete a rear brake system , i wont use it without my Awd. thanks for all your help, in fact please keep posting any more problems or suggestions, i really appriciate it. ill look into the front caliper ex-change again, and ill see what i can do, or any other options i have and can do. thanks again, tyler
  2. yes i have rear disks. well i checked out swaping front to rear calipers but the holes dont line up and i never really took it farther than that, trying to ponder over ways in which to make it work. also my hatch is a 1980 and yes it is 4WD. if this mod would make the 4 wheels lock up thats fine, because im going to be doing a drivetrain swap anyway. to an Awd system. ill check again on the swaping calipers but... so far my idea is going smoothly, so unless there is a absoulute "no your plan wont work", or a better solution i think ill run with it.
  3. thanks for the reply, yea i think ill just go with what i got, i think the line is close enough to the caliper itself that it would work nicely without too much fuss. oh well, trial and error right? well, ill let yall know. thanks. tyler
  4. well the work on my rally hatch continues, or will as soon as i get a little more money. anyway, one of the projects im undergoing is a fabbing up a rear hydrolic e brake basically for rallying alone...and playing . anyway i took a hydrolic master cylinder from a mazda mx6, it might be clutch, it has one outlet. what i did was hooked up the plunger behind my e-brake handle on a rod type doohicky. so when i apply the e brake, (fronts disconnected) it works the cylinder flawlesly. now i need to go about plumbing it. unfortunately subaru hooked the brakes up FL, RR and FR, RL. what i think is that i should put a Y directly on each of the calipers, and had the regular line hooked up as well as my new one, would that work correctly? as in two lines going straight to the caliper. or would the pressure brake all 4 of my tires? also would i need a bias at the MC outlet, to keep the pressure equal? any help, or critisisim appriciated. thanks Please bare in mind that this would be for off road and rallying alone. when i drive on the street i would hook up my normal cable fronts Just in case. tyler,
  5. yea and this one would be "bragon." heh heh heh i like. i was thinking about that idea too but alas, i cant yet so, keep us posted! tyler
  6. wow! i just dirtied myself. its always nice to come on and see a wagon without giant tires and mud on it. thats a truely beautiful car. and by the way, what happened to those wrap arround bumpers you wanted from japan or overseas somewhere? eiher way, lookin great. just dont start overdoin it. later. tyler
  7. im going to begin my project car pretty soon, and in order for me to begin to gather parts, id like to know what parts to get. :-p anyway. the victim is a 1980 hatch. ill be making it into a rallyx racer and well the 1600 and slushbox just doesnt cut it! so first off, id like to stuff a FI (fuel injected, not nesisarily forced induction) engine in her. now although i like the ea82t it seems like too much hastle for such a finiky engine. so onwards and upwards. probably the best bet would be a ej22 WITH the AWD box. (dont like the binding and the wierdness on fairly hard dirt. aka where i live) so! i know ill need the tranny, engine with all the electrical and im pretty sure the rear end as well. and as for the stuff im pretty sure ill need are custom driveshaft, different or "custom" crossmember, frankenstined exhaust and probably more. now as for questions, if i do get a parts car and manage to cram the tranny and engine in, what will i do for axles? for the front will the stock ones fit, or will they need legacy d.o.js, or will i need legacy axles, and legacy hubs or what? same questions go for the rear axles too. keep in mind i have an 80 hatch with a 1600 engine. i know a guy did it in australia and im going to search more for him but i cant find his info anywhere. so im asking here. any suggestions or advice appriciated. thanks, im sure theres more but im pooped and need to be gettin off to bed. thanks again tyler j
  8. that was a nice write up GD. i wish the tech stuff i NEED was writen that clearly.
  9. hey miles! or anyone for that mater. i have an 80 hatch, is it basically the same as a brat? 83 (second gen?)i thought it was, other than body of course. if so the same swap as above will work correct?
  10. a few weeks ago my tranny was leaking out of the shift rod seal., well it still is. anyway, i drove the car a few miles, parked it and noticed a puddle (tranny fluid) under the inner, passenger side cv joint. i replaced the seal, and about 6-10 miles later, its leaking again. something worn out? time for a new tranny? im gettin kinda irritated as i dont want to go get another tranny, or have to tear this one down. help or advise would be helpful. thanks, btw its an '80 hatch. ea71 4 spd single range 4wd. tyler j
  11. Thats awsome!, but to me the first one especially just doesnt look real, i just dont see any jump worthy of launching him that high. it looks like he was placed there or just fell out of the sky. if not, that sure looks back breaking.
  12. they look great, drive great, get good gas mielage, weigh a lot less than trucks, VERY easy to work on, VERY cheap, VERY reliable, have 4WIS, are pretty well ahead of their time, also at the end of the day, when the jeepers and v8ers are making fun of you, you can pat yourself on the back when you shut them up leave them behind, and STILL get home on the tank of gas you started out with and for not following the crowd. also, you can say you are one of a minute croud that off roads (and does a hellofa good job at it,) their cars. have fun and subaru on !!!! tyler j
  13. well in my hatch i can manuver arround tight little turns and due to its short wheelbase, it doesnt get hung up or scrape very easily.also its lighter so climbing will be easier on its axles, engine and tranny. but there is such a warm "homy" feeling when i drive my wagon so... i really love them both. i fly arround in my little hatch, even with the 1600 and the "crappy" 4 speed. (just kidding gd ) this thing is tons of fun. and boy can it climb. but the wagon its comfortable, more power etc. either way, you'll love your ride, but each one excells where the other one doesnt. so its kind of a win, loose. and besides if your ANYTHING like the other members, you'll end up with a few hatches, and wagons anyway, so just look for the best deal right now. cheers tyler j
  14. sweet, nv zeno, no its not my cv, the previous owner rerouted the e brake line wrong and it ripped and ruined my cv join, i had a thick goo all over the place. but this is indeed tranny fluid. beachbum.. napa eh? wiered did you order it. is that basically the same, like a checker or autozone or do i need to go find my local napa? i think we have one. thanks again though. tylerj
  15. and by the way, when i do fix these seals, where do i get them? dealer? special place? thanks tyler j
  16. on my tranny, i have yet another nice leak. this time its at my axle outlet. its the axle shaft oil seal. my question, before i tear the damn thing out, is can it, unlike my other leak, be taken care of without spliting the tranny? id just like to know so i dont tear out all the axles only to find out i cant fix it. its leaking out of no where now, so i need to take care of it, as well as the other side. i looked at my old repair manual and it seems to me that it would be accesible. so help would be nice. thanks alot all. tyler j
  17. gl10s are awsome wagons, they have the ea82t engine in them. i absoulutely fell in love with mine. HOWEVER they are not good off roaders for mainly two reasons. one, they are turbo, i believe all of them, and two they are FULLY loaded. power moonroof, ps, pwd, pdl, and a whole heap more of electronic doodads. = very hefty. If you dont want to do the swap, look for a wagon with a dual range tranny. depending on your off roading excursions, its a must have. ozzified is the only lift maker i can think of right now, i think theres one more. but i have heard nothing but good things about them. if you have the wrenching abilities and resources you can make your own. pugs, are pugeot (spelled right??) rims. they have the same bolt patterns as subarus and come in 14 and 15 inch rims and sometimes as nice lookin alloys. you can also do the toyota 6 lug conversion which allows you a very nice selection of off road rims and tires. almost any thing you could ever want or need. do a search for it, i think it can be found at subarubrat.com. btw its a very easy mod. p.s you could also redrill the holes on toy rims and not mess with your hubs. i dont believe a brush guard or rack is made for our cars, but dont quote me on this, all the ones you see on members rides have been made by themselves. i believe someone out there makes safari racks and brush guards that could probably help you out. REAL rally lights are not available to us i dont believe, (but would be sooooo coool.) but a trip to a local checker, autozone etc... and you could pick up some kc, or other brand 6" (about) off road lights. if your going to be a hardcore off roader, an lsd, or welded rear diff. is a must. again just search as much as you can and a lot of the info can be found in the archives. the members here will be more than welcome to help you out. have fun, tyler j
  18. yes, i was confused as well. it all depends on what you want. if you want a log hoppin, rock stompin, go anywhere rig, a lift, larger tires, blah blah blah ,would be excellent. but for rally, a lift would be odd and ive heard that they dont allow lifted rigs to even run. that is if you are talking about a real rallyx tournament. to me it sounds like you want a off road 4x4 vehicle. rally... turbo-good lift-bad giant tires-bad free flowing exhaust good freed up intake...good 4x4 orv... turbo-bad (they create power in upper rpms, whereas with 4wdriving, you want a "grunt" type vehicle that makes torque in lower rpms.) lift..good giant tires...good. free flowing exhaust good. if this is your case, any turbo model would not be a good choice. for rally imo, it would be. a wagon is a fun roomy vehicle that is good to romp arround with in the mud, and to 4wd in. but imo, for a rally car, it seems a bit too heafty to be very nimble or quick. hatch good rally or 4wd orv car. coupe. good rally car. not so good 4wd. sedan, good rally, good 4wd. brat. good rally, good 4wd. a subaru with all the other normal mods. intake, exhaust, etc... would be a great car either way. and btw, ea81s are less hasstle to deal with if your not mechanically inclined. ea82s are great engines but have a few problems. timing belts to worry about, headgaskets are a problem generally, cracked heads (not usually a problem.) and oil leaks, "ohhhh the leaking!!!!!" thats all i have time to think of right now, but a little searching through the archives and you will turn up with this question and any others you might have fully answered. a lot of this is basically my opinions, so be sure take other "counsel as well." welcome, and happy rallying or 4wding. which ever you do. tyler
  19. haha no offence was thought to be takin. its just fun hasstlin people who like one certain thing a bit too much. like saying brats suck! (absoulutely j/k) 10 minutes later you have 20 messages, 4 death threats and an angry mob bangin at your door. i was just buggin. any way, thanks for the info and help. tyler j
  20. yes i do realize that. i also meant ea81 as well. i dont even think a ea71 could push a 5 speed. and im still debating whether to lift and off road this car, or sell it and get a rx, or other more rallyx worthy car. lol and im sorry, i didnt mean to offend you. with the dissing of the 4 speed. but what i meant by crappy is that its a 1980 tranny, and i would much rather prefer a newer late 80s 5 speed, single or dual range. this one is very "slushy" and i cant really race or rallyx it arround out in the dessert. im sure for slow (aka sane) driving it would be and is fine, but this tranny just doesnt fit my needs. so pleasae count to ten and coooool down, i take back my "crappy" comment. haha cheers, tyler
  21. hey todds, one more question lol. jb weld is used to repair cracks in blocks and heads and stuff like that. that stuff is hard as rock. how will it allow my shift rod to move if it hardens so well, hard? and is that "gasket" WITH the jb weld, or actually with rubber. a little more info and ill be set. thanks. pics maby??
  22. and by the way how long has this fix been lasting? what conditions? thanks.
  23. sweet, i could give that a shot, might not be "top notch" but its just a little crappy 4 speed 4wd, i was kinda planning on 5 speeding it shortly so even a temp fix would be great, its been feeling slightly wiered so the tranny might be going out anyway. ill try what you said, and let you know. thanks for the reply.
  24. Sweet82, that right there is bs, with a capital b and s in bold print, underlined!! i hate that crap, there is no reason why that kind of suit should still be allowed, the judge should just through that stupid case out. (from what ive heard so far) its like those people at mcdonalds who spilled HOT coffee on themselves and sued, or the guy who robed someones house, got hurt, sued, and then won! its just stupid, and judges should really start throughing out a lot of these cases because of money hungry slobs. in linda's (im guessing) case, she should sue, accordingly that is, because bacically the sleepy lady will get off scott free, while linda most likely got hurt, (give it a few days) her son almost gets hurt, and her car gets destroyed (mostlikely.) thats like falling, hurting your back, then selling your car for a few dollars. you gets nothing!! same in her case and the sleepy lady (better be insured), gets her car fixed or her new one and her insurance pays linda a measly couple hundred dollars, what the car is "worth." this kind of crap really pisses me off.
