78' Wagon with EA81 motor?
SUBARU3 replied to captainkettel's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
The 79 and 80 BRAT are also EA 71. You need a 1981 BRAT for the special pieces. The 81 BRAT only....had the EA81 and the dual range 4WD. Quite frankly, the 1600 vs the 1800 is not that noticeable a difference to me. Not worth all the effort anyway. If you tune out the EA 71 you are usually just fine. Feel free to call me if you want to discuss. Todd -

I'm curious about this too. I know the replacements are rubber in a steel sleeve. -

Old and the new side by side
SUBARU3 replied to Skip's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Hey skip! Nice rides!! I might need your help with my relocation back to PA in the future!!! Looking to buy some land south of York. Need a big garage and a few acres! -
I agree...it's most-likely not a serious issue with your carb. (Unless the shafts or choke assem are worn.) If it runs well cold, with the rich mixture, but not warm, with a leaner mixture, you have a clogged jet maybe, or an air leak that's leaning the mix to much when warm. (Run on sentence!) But rebuilding would eliminate that variable, improve performance and smooth. These carbs are really quite simple, so don't let people snow you into a big price tag for rebuild!! Also check and replace ALL the vac tubes. Often they look fine , but they are dried and leaking. I always notice a difference when I have changed these out. Check all vac devises for leaks. Check manifold gaskets and carb mounting bolts too. Is the EGR gasket leaking? Todd

Front bumper brackets of "historic" 4WD
SUBARU3 replied to cricket's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Paul's pic is the same for all Gen 1 4WDs form 77 onward. BRATs and wagons. (Except for the early 77/ and some 78s with the small "rounded" bumper). Most had the "box" bumper with the brackets in Pauls pic. Todd -

SUBARU3 replied to cricket's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Those pics are not from an 80 BRAT. ALL gen 1 4WDs had pressed steel mounts. Not shocks. I will attempt to get pics. Todd -

The rear shocks are the same as ALL gen 1 cars. 2WD OR 4WD. I might have a set of rears. Are you interested? Todd -

Front bumper brackets of "historic" 4WD
SUBARU3 replied to cricket's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
The 2WDs had to pass the 5 mph impact test. The BRATs were exempt, as a "utility vehicle". The mounts on the 4WDs did not contain a shock and were kind flimsy IMO. Not much you can do about it though. The same with the doors on the BRATs and 4WD wagons. They did not have the side impact beams on them. You can however, switch the doors with a 2wd wagon, for wagon.....or 2WD coupe/sedan with the BRAT. That way you can upgrade to a higher margin od safety! -
Hi: I have a female friend that needs a local mechanic to do normal maintence on her 97 Legacy AWD. What happened to Arlington Subaru??????? Who bought their dealership??? My friend went to a guy there by the name of "lim". A good Subi mechanic and now he is gone. Where did he go?? So, who knows a good, fair, independent Subaru mechanic in the Dallas, Ft. Worth area? Thanks, Todd

Cloppy: Are you the one that bought the wagon that was listed on Auto trader? I tried to buy that one, but it was sold. I told the seller to give the buyer my phone #. Let's see pics! Todd

Towing a 79 4WD with a tow bar
SUBARU3 replied to cricket's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
4WDs are 4 speeds in the Gen 1s. It's doesn't matter though. You can tow with all 4 down, in neutral/2wd/steering lock key in and unlocked. As for brackets, thats custom. Todd -
