  1. no i don't know about that, it could be causing my noises now im not sure but i know that Legacy struts will work in Impreza strut tops
  2. i don't know for sure, but im pretty sure the mounting is the same,
  3. it knocked before i lifted it, then after the lift when the whole backseat was dissasembled i drove it and it still knocked i could see the top of the strut moving in the top, i replaced the top and the noise went away, for a while but now its doing it again. Would adding an upper strut sway bar thingy help? or are those just snake oil?
  4. I did this to a 97 Imp and i think that they are all the same, but after the strut swap i was getng a really bad knocking noise from the rear, i replaced teh top mounts but i got impreza ones instead of legacy which the struts are, they were ok for a while but they are knocking again. Im wondering if just my coils are to soft and im not getting enough rebound. Next im gonna try outback coils to see if that helps. then maybe try legacy strut tops. I did get 2" out of just the struts which allowed me to clear 215 40-18's LOL i couldn't pass them up 300 bucks for all 4 rims with 3 tires, i spent yesterday searching yards for a 4th, finally found one after 5 o clock, got it mounted and damn they look good, kinda goofy but defently better than 14's with snow tires. As soon as i get a digicam ill post some pix.
  5. I swapped in legacy struts on my 97 Brighton and got a good little boost in clearance, about 2 inches, need new rims/rubber soon so i think im just gona go to the tire shop and see whatll fit. Supposedly the forrester struts give a little more lift, but i went with the legacy cause they were in stock. Id recommend getting new coils at the same time and get a little more lift. Plus im finding a 2.2 to swap out my 1.8 and gain 30 horses or so. If you do a search youll find tons of info on the swap on here and nasioc.com
  6. Sorry im starting with a 97 Brighton Coupe mfg date 7/96, 1.8l 5spMT, i think its only ODB I but i thought after 96 all cars were supposed to be odb II I was talking with rattyaustin and he said to use a pre 96 2.2 out of a legacy which i now have a line on but im getting more and more confused.
  7. Ive been reading a bunch on the 1.8 to 2.2 block swap, So i got a line on a 98 2.2 with 9k out of a AT on it for $400 thats missing one head, if i have to use the 1.8 heads anyways will it work in my 1.8MT? Ill need head gaskets, intake gaskets, timing belt, clutch, lightend crank pully, air box replacemnet, o2 sensors, plugs, wires...what else should i replace? Can i use the 2.2 exhasut y pipe/header?
  8. Very nice to see something other than obw lifted, ive got a 97 coupe with legacy shocks on it right now but i wnat more lift so im gonna have to get new coils, did you just use stock forrester coils? As it sits right now i only got about 1.5-2 inches, the length difference in the strut bodys but i wnat more\ Also from all ive read you can use a 2.2 block with the 1.8 manifolds, heads and wiring and not have to change anything but the block. I hope someone can clarify this cause its what im planing on doing as soon as i can scrounge c few hundred bucks for a 2.2. Also would you get a clutch for a 1.8 or 2.2 after a swap??
  9. What all is does the WRX change? Really im just lookin to get more power, and play a little off road. Ive already added legacy struts for a little lift. I would really rather not mess with the wiring . IF i could just change the block, use the 1.8 ECU and wiring thats what id like to do. If that turns out to not to be what im lookin for then id like to maybe turbo it down the road. Would I then have to change the ECU? Sorry for being totally ignorant on this subject but im new to the subi world, i did an engine swap on my Tacoma last year but that was just a 3.4 to a newer 3.4, no wiring was needed.
  10. I can't wait to get rid of my 1.8, is all you changed the longblock and injectors? what about the ECU?
  11. Is there anyway to fix if the holes are too big? i remember when i took it apart the nuts were loose, i tightend them down but now im scared/ that the holes are opend up.
  12. I have a 97 Brighton Coupe and I used Monroe Sensa-tracs, off a 99 legacy, with my stock Coils and got about 2 inches all the way around, the length difference in the struts, i think if i had swapped the coils as well id have gotten more but im working on a limited income. I would also swap out the upper strut mounts while your in there, i didn't and really regretted it, the stock ones were shot and knocking like mad it sounded like a broken strut but was actually the mount. Anyways it looks good in the front, but the rear doesn't seem that much higher it actally looks lower in the rear. I know this was a long ramble with no real point but its good to know that another imp coupe is gonna be lifted, be sure to post some pix id like to see it when its done.
  13. So my drivers window won't go all teh way up strait, the rear is on track but the front isn't. i took the door apart and it seems like there should be a bearing/roller holding the window into the track, any body have an exploded veiw of the window workings, or any ideas on how to fix this problem.
  14. Why not? Why lift a OB sport? Why do you ask a question like that on a message board like this? I needed new shocks anyways and i thought id be alittle differeent. Ive been serious offroading for years but i wanted just a fun car for the less techincal dirt road driving. I need to figure out where this noise is cause even city roads with snow is knocking like mad
  15. I asked for outback shocks at NAPA and these are the ones i got,the reciept says 99 Legacy 2.2. at first glance i seemed to get an inch or two of lift, nothing crazy just mild. the strut body was defiently longer than what came off and the diameter was the same im pretty sure cause the coil fit in the base cup perfectly. Maybe after i drive it a little ill pull off and see if i can see any shiny spots. Is it safe to drive, it handles good and tracks strait just knocks like mad when i hit a bump. could it just be the top plate bearing gone bad? i need to figure this out
  16. Could you mean the ball joints not the CV's? I just replaced the front cv's last week and the rears are fine. but the ball joints were alittle sloppy but not broken. My center bolt was moving after the first time i tried to install the coils on the drivers rear, so i knew something was wrong, took out the whole assembly and realized the top of the coil plate wasn't strait and figured that was the problem, recompressed the springs, spun the top plate where i thought it should be, put it all bac togehtor and no noise when i push strait down on the trunk but when im driving i get knocks from all the wheels. i can;t tell if the center bolt moves cause im driving but it is loud. Ive got the center bolt as tight as it would go with the spirng compressed, or at least the threads are bottomed out. How do i know if its my sway bar? can i adjust it somehow?
  17. all i was asking was if new legacy struts was all i needed to lift my impreza brighton a small amount or if i needed other parts, now that ive done the struts i have a real bad knock and im wondering if i need to replace the strut tops, or if the coils need to be replaced along with the struts i don't want to do any trimming just want a little lift and a little bigger tires to fill the holes and look good. the struts alone gave me around two inches but the knock is driving me nuts.
  18. I lifted my 97 Impreza Brighton coupe with Monroe SensaTrac Struts for a 99 Legacy with the stock brighton coils, and had it aligned and now its knocking really bad, like it was before i replaced the old leaking and broken struts, do i need to replace the upper strut mount with the bearing when i change the struts, or is it something that wears out? Are the old coils just to weak to give the proper tension for the bigger strut? the alignment came back pretty good, it was way off when i took it in but now im kinda scared to drive it. It is in the teens here so i dont' know if the cold is causing malfunctions.
  19. show me exactly where it says anything about a new generation coupe, i see all sorts of stuff on older roo's and imprza wagons but no coupes, THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP FOR A NEWBIE,
  20. From everything ive seen, im wanting to get some struts off a Legacy outback or SUS, hopefully that will give me 2-3 inches. If i change the struts do i have to change the coils also, or could i use the brighton coils cause they are set up for the proper weight?
  21. Ok so this is my first post cause ive only had my Sooby for less than two weeks so please be gentle. Ive got a 97 Brighton Coupe and really really want to lift it, ive been driving my lifted Tacoma for the past 5 years and am looking for a new toy. I dont' want anything wild just a few inches. I stumbled accross this site through my Tacoma fourm, and everything looks great, endless possibiltys with older sub's but i have yet to see anything on my car. I have seen a 97 Outback wagon but no impreza coupe. do i have the same suspension set up as the outback or am i better off turning it into a street car?
