EA81's do not have timing belts, they have timing gears. which will generally outlast several engine rebuilds...

well i have a: Compaq prosignia 266, 256 ram.. and a couple drives... the other one i might end up keeping.. Compaq Proliant 400mhz, 512 ram, and a bunch of drives.. the prosignia i can get rid of for sure.. works fine, would just need an OS installed.. it was used as a file server here at work, till the PS went out.. couldn't get a PS in less than a week so we replaced the server with a new one.. then bought the new PS for it..

Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
guess i need to look under the hood, mine an 84 and 4-speed.. valve covers have been painted by the previous owner(s) so no tags on'em... thanks for the info.. definitely points me in the right direction.. -
you got me... but i could use a place to put some pics as i work on the hatch.. i dunno how ya run the server, or if your just leasing space on someone elses server, but if your runnin it yourself i bet i can donate a hard drive or 2. i got plenty layin in my storage room at work.. heck if ya did wanna run a server yourself, i got 3 of those sittin in my storage room, slated for the dumpster.. they all work great and have plenty of hard disk space..

well i grabbed another spindle outa the scrap yard.. had a good wheel bearing.. pulled mine apart. the cv nut was torqued to 200lbs, don't know why.. it took my torque wrench and teh handle off my handyman jack as a pry bar to get it off.. after that it was smooth sailing.. the old one had no grease in it at all.. was pretty dry, rusted and toasted.. but i repacked the new one, greased everything so it would all slide back together easy. and bam done in an hour.. my first wheel bearing change in a soob.. kinda did it the easy way by just changin the whole spindle but eh, it worked car is as quite as a new one drivin down the road now, no grindin, poppin, or shakin.. and it takes alot less pedal to get the thing movin, hehe.. now its time to tackle the stripped out bolts in the exhaust, replace 2 headlights, 1 brake light, and that front marker lens and it should apss inspection

what is up with my turbo?
Meeky Moose replied to MilesFox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sounds like a vacuum line to me, there is a line that goes into teh air intake tube.. forget where the other end goes.. but i popped that off once on my turbo wagon and it would run the same way.. not rev above 3500 but at low rpms it was fine.. but when the turbo would spool i'd get about 1psi of boost then it would dog out and not run.. sorta acted like a plugged cat would... -
yeah i was speaking in terms of individual gears, thinkin maybe a 5-speed has lower gearing in 1,2,3 than the 4-speed does... as the hatch is now ya can't get it into 4th gear until your doin 70+.. and if a 5-speed has lower gearing in the 1,2,3 then that would be better for offroading anywho...

is there a difference in gear ratios in a 5-speed d/r and a 4-speed d/r?

ea81 era key questions
Meeky Moose replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i know on the back of my hatch i gotta open it with the key, don't think it was meant to be a button... -
well i found a junkyard yesterday afternoon.. they said the specialize in late model stuff, so i figured they prolly wouldn't have what i needed.. but anyways since its not a u-pull-it, the yard guy drove me back to the soob parts in a SOOB.. we had to boonie hop down a hill, then forge a foot deep mud pit to get to the soobs tho... when we get there i see like 3 rows (20+ in a row) of nothing but ea81 and ea82 soobs.. i was like holy crap you got alot of these.. just at a quick glance, there were a few ea81 wagons, 1 ea81 hatch, an xt6 or 2, a few regular xt's, an RX, loads of turbo and N/A coupes, wagons, and sedans, gl's, gl-10's, dl's... didn't see any brats tho.. and since the guy didn't get my spindle outa the only hatch there, i asked him if i could wander, he said sure np... so i went for a walk.. the hatch had a Like-new chrome roof rack (factory) and just about every other part i need.. (sorry i found my parts car) there was also a couple chrome roof racks on the ea81 wagons.. nice shape.. so wandered though the other rows.. most of the cars were smashed in one form or another.. lots of roof racks, wings, RX spoiler, interior parts galore (lots of interiors were almost mint, seats included) tons of parts... almost all of the suspension parts on alot of these are already pulled and in the backs of the cars.... now the drawback is its not a pick-n-pull, so the guy looks at his computer screen and says yep or nope if they got it... since i got a good look at the hatch i can tell him what he has and doesn't have for it, lol. and thier prices aren't the lowest around.. spindle with a good wheel bearing cost me $40... but i got to ride in aother soob and go boonie hopin and mud boggin lol so it wasn't too bad.. at any rate, if you all can't find a part, i'm bettin they have it.. just thoguht i'd share my junk yard experience ohh yeah there was a couple touring wagons there too (raised roof)

okie doke, i got the spindle yesterday after noon.. its not a u-pull-it, so i had the yard guy draggin me around.. after lookin at 3 different ones we found one that still had tons of grease in it and felt real good... so i snagged it for $40, cleaned it up.. looks like new, tonight i gotta repack it and stick that puppy on there.. thanks for the info

the way i understood it i would need to get the bearing pressed out and in... thats whats turned me off from just doin the bearing.... i figured if i could get the hole assembly i could swap that easily... guess i'm a littel confised by what ya mean when ya say "knuckle" they way i understand it the hub is what the rotor bolts too.. which is also what the strut is connected too?? i'm just a littel confused as to what spindle is, where the wheel bearings at...

Bypassing Overboost Controller?
Meeky Moose replied to Scrub2k's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
so how do ya bypass it on an 86 turbo wagon? -
i need to change out the front pass side wheel bearing on my 84 4x hatch... i'm a bit confused as to what i need to grab at the boneyard.. the guy told me i don't need the hub i need the spindle.. i always thought the hub had the wheel bearing in it.. the thing about the spindle is new to me... and if i do need the spindle to get the wheel bearing, how does that fit in the hub?? any insight on this would be appreciated..thanks
