well, got the spare ingine in the hatch runnin today.. aside from the oil pan, oil pump, oil pressure sending unit, valve cover gaskets leakin a little, it runs pretty decent.. a little valve tick but they are adjustable, so i figure i'll take it in and let someone else adjust the valves and that'll take care of the valve cover leak at the same time.. the new water pump should be in tomorrow (old one is good though) and i think i'll order a new oil pump and sending unit.. also had to put in a new cv axle to replace the one i broke.. that went well was only $65.. water pump i ordered was only $24 i used my original intake so i wouldn't have to mess with linkage and such, all went on nicely.. this spare engine sat for 2 years ( i am told) but hell it fired right up after i got the plug wires on right, didn't even smoke.. still doesn't smoke... i can't figure out where 3 plugs go though.. they are just hangin, they originate from the area around the coil.. don't seem to affect anything so am not going to worry about'em... fixed the tail lights while i was at it, the wires in the roof for the dome light were the ones shorting out thus kiling the tail lights and dashlights.. so i'm not too pissed off at this hatch anymore, just a little peeved.. all in all a good days worth of work with a happy ending:banana:

i'm just about done ****in with this hatch
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well after breaking 3 drill bits and 2 easy outs, i managed to get 4 holes cleaned out.. these holes are the ones that hold the alternator bracket on the head and block.. there are still 2 more that i couldn't get out, so i'm gonna cross my fingers and hope it works.. i managed to get that lump in the car.. and after gettin it mated to the trans, the friggin mtor mounts wouldn't go in.. (thee were the original ones on the spare engine that came outa a wagon) so after ****in with it for 4 hours, i managed to break a cv axle, bend my pry bar, and trash the tranny mounts.. still didn't get them in. so i got a wild hair up my rump roast to take'm off, then looked at the ones that came outa the hatch and they were backwards.. is there a difference in how they go on between a wagon and hatch? so anyways, pulled the ones off my original engine (looked new) flipped them around, popped them on and whala, they fit perfectly.. so its mounted and bolted in now.. tomorrow i gotta switch intake manifolds, hook everything back up, change the oil, filter, get new heater hoses and radiator hoses, and cross my fingers.. really its not worth this much trouble for an engine that (was supposed) to run... i called Jules, since he is makin a run with trogdor to a yard, he's gonna snatch me somethin while he's there.. he wants my ea82T outa my wagon anyways.. my original engine looked like it was a new shortblock, but the valve springs are shot (lifters float at 1800 rpm's and rattle) and its got a rod knock, so I might pull it apart and rob the pistons and rings, and chuck the rest in the dumpster.. i don't figure this spare engine will run too long, so i gotta get another one to rebuild from scratch, so i can plop it in and get a couple hundred k outa it .. plus my spare is a pushrod engine, i rather have hydraulic lifters.. just my personal preference -
this piece of **** has royally pissed me off.. i'm bout ready to throw this ****ing car in the ****ing junkyard.. the engine in it has a rod knock. the spare i got has several snapped off bolts that won't come out, i've drilled, and snapped 3 of the eay outs already and not even budged any of the snapped off bolts.. this hatch will prolly end up rotting in my driveway or hittin the scrapper, i don't have the money, or the patience anymore to **** with this thing..

my 86 turbo wagon had a 1 core in it originally.. with a clutch fan.. after the 2 core was put in, the clutch fan no longer fit..

This is important, please give input!

i believe toms test would work.. if front diff and rear diff are different ratios one would turn faster than the other making the marks be out of alignment on a revolution or 2 of all 4 tires.. white chalk on the tires would work for the marks and a 8' 2x4 to get them even me thinks would work also.. -
differences between 2wd and 4wd???
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
just the info i was lookin for, i knew someone would have better insight than me i do remember when i bought the parts that the flyheel and clutch were bigger than a n/a because its a turbo.. and i seem to remember someone sayin an xt6 clutch is the same.. so i thought that since both cars are ea82T and 5-speed that the parts would interchange.. only difference really is one tranny is d/r 4wd and one is 2wd.. and i knew about the spline difference between n/a and turbo cars.. thanks WJM -
wheel bearings easy?
Meeky Moose replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
when i did mine i cheated, just went to the scrap yard and got a hole hub.. was alot easier, just made sure i repacked the bearing before installing. works like new.. -
swap the rear disc outa the 2wd wagon into my 84' hatch??
-
just wondering if there is any difference between the 2wd flywheel, pressureplate, clutch, etc in a 2wd 5-speed ea82t and a 4wd 5-speed ea82t? also is there any difference in front rotors?
-
well i must say, when i bought my 95 conversion van, i bought the extended warranty, it added $20 a month to my payment.. good thing i did, cause that warranty company, paid for an engine, rearend, brakes, rotors, drums, fuel injectors, fuel pump, sending unit, wiper motors and on down the list.. they paid about 8 grand in repairs on that damn thing.. so in my book the extended warranties are very nice to have.. sounds like you just got some bad luck with the company going outa buisiness.. i'd try and make the dealer pay ya back for that warranty.. i gotta add, the warranty company spent 8 grand on that van in a matter of 8 months or so.. so the $20 a month savings bein put in the bank wouldn't have cut it by a long shot..

2 dead soobs in my yard now
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey andrew, yeah i'd be willin to sell it.. i'll be pickin up dennis's RX mid month.. so i figured i'd either sell the car off hole, or part it out and have the junkyard come get it.. i'm open to offer on it hole.. keep in mind its just a 2wd... new clutch, PP, bearings, flywheel, and rear mainseal, all bought from the stealership.. have prolly 16k on them...cost me $700 for the parts alone.. 2 new front tires as of a month ago.. would deffinitely need a radiator if you planned on drivin it home.. other than that it would do just fine.. we've been to dc several times, down to lostwaters place, and up to NJ to pick up the hatch.. so its deffinitely road worthy. i was thinkin if i part it out, i'd keep the new flywheel, etc, wheels, tires, disty, plug wires, and maybe a couple odds and ends.. if i go this route, i've already gotten an offer of $100 just for the heads and timing belt covers.. (gen 3 heads). but if i sell it hole, i'd look for somewhere abouts $500.. and thats just because of the new clutch, etc.. i'll post in teh marketplace see if theres any takers. i got another month to get it outa here anyways.. -
2 dead soobs in my yard now

well its gettin scrapped cause the frame rails are rusted out, theres a hole in the back where the jack goes that i can stick my foot through, and it won't pass inspection with that rust.. i'm pretty sure hte radiator fell apart due to rust.. and i wouldn't wanna risk it poppin a plug somewhere and trashin a perfectly good runnin engine.. i thought about puttin that ea82t in my hatch but since its got 290k original, i don't think it be worth the hassle.. i picked up an ea81 from lostwater. went down and pulled it fer free.. had good oil, and coolant still in it, and the car was driven home the last time it was run, so i'm pretty confident the engine will at least run.. i don't have hte money or the time now to reseal it or anything.. i'm just gonna slap it in , change the oil, and hope for the best.. if it leaks a little, that won't hurt my feelings.. its just gotta run long enough for me to get this lump of **** rebuilt and then it'll be comin back out.. if it runs good, i'll just have a real good spare engine.. -
now i'm walkin alot sooner than i thought.. the turbo wagon has been usin lots of water lately.. so i figured i'd flush it, and refill for good measure.. so i get home reach under there to pull the dran plug on the radiator, and the hole damn thing falls off in my hands, the plaug snapped off, and the threads in the radiator came out.. so i'm pretty sure thats where my water was goin, right out the friggin drain.. and since it won't pass inspection, its gonna sit until the end of nov. and then its hittin the scrapper.. no point replacing the radiator then scrappin the car in a month.. so now i got 2 dead soobs sittin in my driveway.. really sux.. the hatch i bought less than a month ago needs a friggin engine, and the wagon is not drivable. the only thing left is the ole ford truck... 12mpg ugghhh sorry for the rant, just very upset atm. over these damn subaru's..

Scary sound from my RX pt. 2
Meeky Moose replied to 88rxsedan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well, theres a part 2 to my ea81 hatch too.. you could only hear mine real well from the inside as well, but not very much if any under the hood.. turns out it was a rod knock.. damn thing almost threw a rod last night on the way home.. to me it sounds like you have the same symptoms as i had.. so if my motor had a rod knockin, your might too... i'm swappin a motor this weekend :madder: ohh when i drained the oil outa mine, i shined a flash light on it as i was pourin it into a jug, and could see metal shavings in it.. oil was only 500 miles old.. might wanna check yours like that.. was one sign to me that it was an acctual rod knock.. -

glad to hear your alright so far.. i always had a thought about keepin the house from burnin down.. runs some plastic pvc pipe along the tops of the roof so you can hook a hose to it.. turn it on full blast and let it run the entire time.. i figure with all that water soaking the house and yard around the house, it would at least help.. wouldn't care about a huge water bill if it meant my house not burning to the ground.. -
looks like i'm gonna be afoot here very soon
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
body's in good shape, no dents, theres a rust hole where the jack goes.. and the frame rails were rusted out but have been repaired.. some minor rust around the drivers side fender well also, inetrior is all original and in good shape minus the drivers seat, its not ripped, just worn out, and everything works .. i have a picutre of it in the photo album.. http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo82/103_0339 -
well i think the ole turbo wagon is givin up the ghost.. the wife drove it into town, and it overheated.. was outa water.. so she filled it back up.. and temp was fine all the way home.. but on the trip to lostwaters and back (300 miles) it used 2 gallons of water.. it never steams out the tailpipe tho.. only when its cold outside, but thats normal with any car.. nothin in the oil, etc.. and doesn't look like the water pump is leakin cause its got oil, from a oil leak on it.. so go figure.. but since she's got 290k original, i think when inspection is up next month she'll be sold off for parts... i can't complain about her one bit, she's always been reliable and gotten me where i wanna go. so its kinda sad to see her diein a slow death :boohoo: :boohoo: :boohoo:

tried the atf flush on my hatch
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well, after the car warmed up its started rattling like hell and the knock is still there so guess i'll be rebuildin this spare this weekend.. maybe get it in there next weekend.. grrr.. its always annoying when ya get to 1500-2000 rpm's and the lifters diesel, (float, clatter like hell) then ya gotta put up with the gremlin beatin on it with a hammer, and it soundin like it needs an oil pump in the worst way... -
well the fuse hadn't blown until the other day. and it popped, so i got out, put another in , it popped, so i pull the back panel for the tailights and one of the connectors was wet so i dried it, put in another fuse and it blew.. so finally i stuck another fuse in it and it was fine.. drove around with the lights on for 2 days. no problems.. i get in the car this morning, they worked fine until i got about half ways to work and pop. out it went again.. so i pulled the back panel, and everything was dry.. so after the 4th fuse this morning, i said screw it, and drove to work without them... the dash lights go out as well when the fuse pops.. i can't figure out where its shorting out.. i did install another stereo but i just left the factory connectors on the wires that used to run the stereo light.. so its not shorting out there i know.. any suggestions aside from tearin the hole damn car apart??
