96 Subaru Legacy 2.2l not Starting
danbennett2u replied to cbeasley's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXnothing that HAS to be replaced, but generally everyone on here will reccomend getting new idler pullies, and a water pump since you have to do a timing belt service to replace these wear items. Search ebay for timing belt kit, subaru, and you should find some for your 2.2

96 Subaru Legacy 2.2l not Starting
danbennett2u replied to cbeasley's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXcould have stripped the teeth off underneath. It should turn even if it slipped, time for a replacement belt.

Any engines comparable to EJ22 in later Legacys?
danbennett2u replied to 1997reduxe's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have heard the H6 in the 2001+ cars is pretty reliable, no HG issues that I have heard of. I have heard of people mentioning idler pully issues but that seems pretty minor to me. Timing chain is a plus to me. The FB 2.0 seems a step in the right direction but is too new to make judgment on.

Question about fuel filter...
danbennett2u replied to efseiler's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have heard that the oil from the K&N filters can accumulate on the MAF sensors over time though. If you do choose to go with an oiled air filter keep this in mind and clean the sensor periodically.

How can I retrieve trouble codes on my girlfriend's 2004 2.5 TS?
danbennett2u replied to The's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXLoyales are pretty much stripped down versions of the late 80's GLs and DLs. The engine in those is slightly problematic. If you buy a Loyale over a GL or DL you will not have the option for a dual range 4WD system. Personally I would go for an EA81 vehicle if you are looking for something of that design vintage. Older body style than the EA82 based Loyales and DL/GL models but more durable engine and same off road capabilities. Ask around in the old gen section of the forum, you will get more info on these cars. Generally they are better for 4WD uses than the new gen cars such as legacy and impreza, but the new gen cars make better daily drivers for most people.

4EAT labor costs?
danbennett2u replied to SUBARU3's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSubies dont seem to be picky about the brand, just follow what it calls for in the manual which I beleve is a dexron type. I have no knowledge about whether a flush can be done on a subaru tranny sorry.

Question about fuel filter...
danbennett2u replied to efseiler's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAs mikelada said though I think it is just napa Gold not the lower end napa branded stuff. Oreiley does have a wix branded fuel filter on their website and it shows it in stock in my local store and online so chances are good they will have it in yours too.

Anybody recognize this sound?
Well noise AND smoke is never a good sign, something is really broke good in there. Sorry to hear it isnt easily repairable but sounds like a good swap candidate for someone.

Anybody recognize this sound?
I had no clue but was thinking big block too until I looked up what a Cortina was lol. Looks like it would be a fun little car to drive around the states, nice attention grabber.

Intermittent Engine problem on EJ22 Legacy
danbennett2u replied to vamos's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI had something similar happen on my 92 Legacy. Ended up being the plug wires. It was arcing around the boot directly from the coil to the base of the coil and somehow causing the computer to reset when it arced, thus causing the car to stumble at high speeds or die at low speeds. Probably not your issue but throwing it out there anyway.

Fair Price for '99 Outback? Needs Engine
danbennett2u replied to RedMtnRacer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf the tires are truly new and are name brand, that may be sparking a lot of the interest, as they will sell with the wheels for close to $500 most likely - at least around here...

Fair Price for '99 Outback? Needs Engine
danbennett2u replied to RedMtnRacer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI agree, it is getting hard to find any new gen for under $1000. I like to stay under $2000 for my car purchases, and if you find one that runs decent, doesnt have 300k miles and isnt multicolor you kind of have to jump on it quick. Non running is of no interest to me though so I kind of laugh when people try to sell non running mid-late 90's cars for $2000. I always wonder if they find a sucker that will buy it.

Question about fuel filter...
danbennett2u replied to efseiler's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI recently got a wix air filter at oreilley auto parts in Fargo ND. Dont know if that was just something they carry regionally or actually I dont even know if oreilley is national but know they have them in Colorado and North Dakota at least.

Had never heard of a Cortina GT, looked it up on wiki, pretty neat looking car, but only 78 hp.

97 legacy outback - running on 2 cylindars
danbennett2u replied to DavieGravy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhen you say the car loses a lot of oil, do you mean it leaks on the ground or that it just dissapears as in burning it?

clanking and vibration between 10 and 20 mph,
Well I will try the fuse but since I am getting this under deceleration too I am not expecting much. Is there a writeup somewhere that describes exactly how to remove a driveshaft or part of it? I have never done this

ScanGauge in a late '95 ODBII Impreza, worth it?
danbennett2u replied to crazyman03's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI think it would work for what they advertise. It says it just has to be fully OBDII compliant, and the 95 subarus are. I dont think it uses manufacturer speciic info or advanced readings that were added later to get its readings since it says it works with 1996 vehicles.

How can I retrieve trouble codes on my girlfriend's 2004 2.5 TS?
danbennett2u replied to The's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOne of these works for basic code reading if HF ships to canada: http://www.harborfreight.com/can-obdii-code-reader-with-multilingual-menu-98568.html

clanking and vibration between 10 and 20 mph,
The FWD fuse only affects the duty C solenoid. The driveshaft will still turn with the fuse in since it is connected to the rear diff and thus the wheels, all it does is disconnect it from power at the transmission. I think I am pretty much screwed and need to find a driveshaft to replace this with as everyone on this thread seems to think.

weird over heating problem
danbennett2u replied to mikaleda's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCould also be a bad radiator cap. Bubbles in the overflow tank can be caused from the loss of the seal on the cap, and it would cause you to lose antifreeze. I would try replacing the cap if you haven't already and refilling it.

How can I retrieve trouble codes on my girlfriend's 2004 2.5 TS?
danbennett2u replied to The's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXRegarding the valves, the 2.5 does require valve adjustments periodically I believe, not sure if that applies to a 2004 model. What is the mileage on the car? You could also be hearing the injectors, which seem to be noisier on subarus than on other cars, maybe just due to the placement of them.

How can I retrieve trouble codes on my girlfriend's 2004 2.5 TS?
danbennett2u replied to The's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI am not aware of any way to check codes without a reader. If you dont own one and dont want to buy one take it to an auto parts chain and they will usually read and clear them for you for free.

clanking and vibration between 10 and 20 mph,
Nipper said you cant remove the driveshaft and drive around on an automatic. I think Fairtax up at the top said fluid drains out now that I think about it. Nipper, is there any significance to not having any thunk when changing directions?
-
clanking and vibration between 10 and 20 mph,
As I stated in my first post it is a 95 AWD impreza automatic. There is no such thing as a Rear wheel drive subaru unless we are talking about the BRZ.
