outback springs
strat replied to mdjdc's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
the rear suspension changed for the 2000+ and will not work on the older legacys. (at least the struts changed, not 100% sure but i would assume the springs are different as well) -
00+ legacy had a different rear setup so the struts from a newer outback probably will not work on a pre 00. i believe the forester struts will actually give you more lift. (a buddy of mine lifted his 04 wrx with forester struts and it sat higher than my legacy) his impreza is probably a bit lighter than a legacy though too so that could explain the difference. i was gonna through up a pic of his car but he seems to have moved them... i'll see what I can dig up... my legacy in the mean time lifted on outback struts with 215/65/16 general grabber at2's vs. my buddy's 2.5gt

the wrx is a basic stage II (drop in filter, turboxs catless up pipe, ebay bellmouth catless down pipe, apexi world sport II exhaust, and an opensource stage II reflash) currently building around 16-17lbs on the off the shelf map. hoping to have a buddy help me get the tune dialed in a bit more with his wideband o2 and maybe a bit more boost. i still have alot of plans for the car... (seats, motor mounts, lightened flywheel/pullies, and alot of suspension work are on the not to distant to do list)

outback or forester struts will give you some lift. i ran outback struts on my 96 leggy wagon and was able to clear a 27" all terrain tire on it.

wow i'm glad to see this place is still around and i'm loving the new format. i'm not sure if anybody would remember me but i had a 96 legacy wagon lifted on outback struts with wrx wheels and 215/65/16 general grabber at2's. a couple pics for reference... I got into driving a bit faster on dirt so i bought a wrx and sold the wagon. a few pics of the wrx as it's progressed. shortly after i bought it... how it sits now... anyways, thought i'd start looking around again as I've really been missing the wagon lately and may try to pick up 97-99 outback in the spring time for some light wheelin' duty. good to be back!

x1/9... i agree... the subaru works well for mud but it has alot of shortcomings offroad...

not all the way to the top but further than what that picture shows. i think that was taking when i was rolling back off it. a bit more momentum and i probably would have crested it.

none of us have yet to air down when wheeling. that was the ONLY situation where it really would have mattered. we weren't worried about getting stuck as i said my friend has been hoping one of us would so he could try out his new recovery gear... scoobyclimbs... he actually works for a clutch company and has some kind of experimental clutch in it that the company is developing... i believe he was more worried about the breather and water getting down in...

keep in mind he daily drives the thing guys... most people don't rock xtreme offroad tires every day... as for too much to do with jeeps... sorry, there aren't any lifted/offroading subarus in my area to go play with :-p he probably could have made it out but he lost momentum and ended up stalling out... he's rocking a new clutch that isn't completely broken in yet and apparently, depressing the clutch pedal in standing water is not all that great an idea... besides, my friend was dying to use his new winch and it gave us an excuse to use it.

a couple of my friends and i went out wheeling on sunday and he took a boat load of pics... two rigs i was running with... yj on 31's (no lift yet) and a lifted tj with 32's. the tj got stuck in some pretty thick, deep, sloppy mud. my friend with the yj got to use his new winch to get the tj out. i had no problems other than not seeing a fallen tree in some high grass and having a root hit my tranny cooler pretty good. didn't puncture it but it definetly has some bent fins. anyways... on to the pics. http://www.pimptiva.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=1736

you could also get the outback cradle spacers that would allow everything to go back into factory spec.

how's everybody's cars coming along? we gonna reschedule this? -
the vid was of the deeper mud. as for the exhaust, at the time that photo was taken, it was already banged up and hanging down pic wise, i didn't have my camera along. and besides, it's kinda hard to take pics of yourself doing things in the mud :-p

click here for pics and vid from saturday.

well... previous owner jerry-rigged the muffler on with a piece of straight pipe, some clamps, and a coat hanger so the exhaust has always been the lowest point on the car. today ended it when i accidently backed into a tree when i was in a tight spot... dented the muffler and the clamps didn't really want to hold to well so i removed it when i got home (i'd rather take it off then have it fall off when going down the road) it's kinda funny... i backed into a tree with my exhaust... bumper NEVER touched the tree... yea... the good news... now my exhaust goes back up in the stock hangers and i have regained some ground clearance

well, since the northeast meet was postponed, i decided to go out with my buddy (yj on 31's) wheelin' anyways. found some new trails and had a blast. got pretty muddy and surprised myself with how capable a subaru can be. highlights include a romp through thick mud probably about one and a half feet deep, a pretty gnarly trail with washouts and a stream crossing, and the demise of my exhaust (not that i really liked it anyways) i will have more pics and a vid or two as he had his camera/vid camera along. these are just the aftermath... and notice anything missing? a before pic for comparison...
