  1. ungh........... today was my first problem with the sub........................... lost my power steering, but i was low on gas so i thought, eh..........i pull into a gas station and the damn belt had fallen off..........strange....... i get home with a new belt that my dad brought over, we got it on (not too tough thanks to no tensioner and just an alternator lever thing)........ i decide to test it out, i got about 2 miles down and it happened again. pulled into the driveway and the bolt holding the harmonic balancer (which i thought was a made up name when i first heard it) had loosened. the key is still there in the engine , but the pully itself is pretty worn on the inside........... question. how hard is this to replace? seems straight forward, but i'm not sure on how much torque and if i'll have enough room to do it. AND, how often does this happen?
  2. no kidding? well hot damn. i'm an idiot.........i just goto the couter and say i want oe pads?
  3. been keeping my eyes open for interior stuff mainly, previous owner was a smoker, your donor car doesn't have grey interior does it? also on another note, can you remove that upholstry from the door panel or is it all one piece? i've not taken mine off yet (dont have a garage or driveway to do it in) and i was always curious if i could just find the fabric somewhere to replace, or if i have to replace the entire panel....... also, looking for cupholder, center console latch, anything to make my ac/heater lights operate, only about half of the lights work, tweeter upgrade behind the side mirrors as well
  4. due to time constraints, dont think i have time for them to get in from whatever website would be reputable
  5. i hate to beat a dead horse, so sorry for raising an oldie: i've decided not to order oem brake pads, instead go with a 'reputable brand' what should that be? i'm not much of a mechanic, but on the previous car, i changed many-a-pads and know how to do it, i was just curious what your recommendations are for pads. i don't drive the car too rough, and i always slow down as opposed to jamming the brakes at the last few feet like some suburbia soccer moms. i'd like to change the pads as they're squeaking now, and i'm driving from omaha to KC this weekend. thanks
  6. i meant the level read at JUST over the full line, sorry. he didn't blatently dump in an extra quart or nothing
  7. i've been tempted to order from subarupartsforyou.com , namely the plug/wire kit and the tweeter upgrade package......the picture for the tweeter upgrade package does not show grill covers, can anybody verify if it indeed comes with it or not? 1stsubaruparts has this kit (only shows for 2000-2004, strangely) but it quotes at over 50dollars more! hellllllllllp
  8. on a similar note, the mechanic inwhich the previous owners of my 95 legacy ls took the car to said that hte rear main was bad.........would this leak oil? cuz it's been the same level for over 2 months now (just over full from when they refilled it after the last checkup) also, if it IS indeed bad, how much would a mechanically disinclined newb like myself be expected to pay (labor and parts of course) for somebody to do this for me? the previous owner was quoted 2100, which tells me that the mechanic did NOT want to do it, thus overcharged the estimate herego, give me a GREAT deal on this car (100bux)
  9. a GLI will isolate hums coming from the RCA outs on your deck into the amp........ my situation was the hum would change pitches with engine rev's. again, i didnt work much on it, i just found a bandaid for the problem really i'm sure, not really that tech savy but it took the noise away completely
  10. had the same issue, but didnt put much work into it, just threw on a ground loop isolator and called it good
  11. i belive there's a screw you have to take out under the center console to disable the lock, as far as the key not coming out, if you rock the wheel back and forth it may allow the key to be removed.......
  12. thanks for the advice. I'm gonna take it a few baby steps at a time, starting with things i've done in the past. Oil, Airfilter, brake pades, AT fluid.........i've never flushed anything, except oil (dur), so i'm anxious to see how smoothly it goes......... yeah it's a 95, and the 6th digit in is a 6 on in VIN's, i even checked other VINs on the other parts of the car, they're all the same, no mismatching, even checked the title...... which leads me to perplexion. i want OEM plugs and wires, that much i've decided on.....
  13. wow. talk about overload on information! i'm a complete idiot when it comes to engines and even basic electronics, but this manual has every little tid-bit. for those on this board that are like me, i highly recommend this. example: i didn't know my car had a 2.5, i thought it was a 2.2 but since my 6th vin digit is a 6, this book tells me i indeed have a 2.5 (not that i know what the differance is) thus it states i need platinum type plugs. i don't recall seeing an option for platinum type plugs on subarupartsforyou.com which raises the question. do i indeed have a 2.5 and subarupartsofryou.com does not stock spark plugs for it, or is haynes wrong and i have a 2.2? some of the regularly scheduled maintenance items listed to do weekly/monthly seem strange, tire pressure, oil levels, coolant levels, etc. how many of you out there abide by this timeline?
  14. so after all of the hype with tarter reducution for headlamps i finally decided to give it a whirl (namely on the driverside). instead of buying cheap dollar general paste, i just grabbed my current tube of aquafresh. i rinsed the lamps and applied the paste with a cotton towel, then soaked the towel with water to slosh it around a bit. frusterated with no progress i rinsed, and dried with disposable shop towels. then i applied more paste on a dry disposable towel and scrubbed. This seemed to go better as the paste was obviously more abrassive. rinsed and dried. my hands smelled fresh and minty. here's a link to the pictures. http://www.dj3stripes.com/subaru/Headlamps-Round1/ i intened to repeat before my next carwash (perhaps with a toothbrush!), as it's still a bit yellow, and in comparisson a LOT more yellow than the passenger side
  15. thank you for the thorough answer, i had this same question a few weeks back but the answer i got wasn't nearly as plotted out as yours, thanks for helping us newbs.
  16. thanks again for the info nipper. what about drilled rotors? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/91-98-Subaru-Impreza-Legacy-Drilled-Rotors-Rotor-F-R_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33564QQihZ019QQitemZ8076396731QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW see em all over ebay, but not sure if they'd be worth the time and money, mine are fine right now, no grooves in them, but the pads only lasted about 9months looking at the previous owner's service records
  17. on the topic of my 1995 legacy LS what do you all recommend? OEM or specific manufacturers for general maintenance? I'm talking about oil, filters, plugs, wires, coolant, pads, rotors and anything else you could think of flushing/changing durring routine maintenance. and another question, has anybody installed the upgraded tweeters? they appear to go in triangle up against the mirror. i've seen removal instructions, and a few popped up on ebay and i'm considering purchasing a set, they seem to LOOK nice, also, has anybody installed the under-seat sub's? as always thanks for reading/replying, i browse this forum several times a day, even tho most of the information doesn't apply to me or my car, and i dont have much to offer for input, its just fun reading all of the help that gets posted here
  18. on my way home fromwork my ABS light came on. i assumed it was due to my pads starting to squeak, but when i pulled into my lot i noticed a whiring noise coming from the hood. i popped it and the ABS thing (had 4 tubes/hoses come out of this box) was making this strange noise....... i went inside to eat and came back out half an hour later to find it was still making the noise. i knew this would eventually drain my battery as it sounds electrical. so i gave it a flick with my index finger and it stopped. i started the car, pumped the brakes and the ABS light did not come on. i tried searching for 'legacy ABS' but i think the search function is down. any idea what is going on?
  19. i've always been curious as to where one shouldn't spray when cleaning it out. battery seems obvious, as does the fuse box, but other than that i'm clueless. and voodoo, don't sweat the newb-ness, i'm outrank you in newbification, least you know what CEL stands for........not to mention being able to determin what to do with an ecu
  20. hrm, what do you have left? i could really use interior upholstry pannels, back seat(covering if removeable http://www.dj3stripes.com/subaru/ if they match the coloring that is) cup holder, and center armrest/console latch
  21. thanks will do. i'll take some pictures of what we've done thus far. i suck at applying paint and i have a feeling i'll be sanding quite a bit. and of course sanding down the rust areas with a dremmel and attachment, then bonding, then sanding, then painting.........ungh, i hate nebraska summers, so hot out. the question is, once the body is touched up enough to my liking, should i get caliper paint? if so, what's a good color to go with the white body? or maybe i'm just getting greedy........
  22. nice. i was thinking the same thing. i'd personally prefer the punching glove attachment for those that ride too close to my backside
