  1. mmmmmm, all the money and i could do what i like, number of choices, im trying to make my blue truck into a rally speced out machine, the lot, fully welded in rollcage, sparco bucket seats, race harnesses, stripped out, loads of toggle switches, fire extiguisher etc etc, im working on the engine at the moment, i wont be able to get max power out of it cause my wallet aint fat enough! but im having the bottom end completly balanced, lightend flywheel, and stuff, doing some porting, and hopefully some SPFI pistons added with HP cams, springs and lifters, should be getting some desert rats as i think they are awesome, added with some rally treads and a cherry bomb back box with stainless steel 2"-2 1/2" pipe would LOVE an LSD in the back, and if i had the chance possibly an impreza 5 speed box, with a dog kit on it, mmmmmmmmmmmmmm! i would really like to get an EA81T and tune the nuts off it, and i no they aint good for turbos and other parts, but a antilag system so she pops and bangs but, this is only what if.... the other consideration would be an STI brat, but we all no thats not cheap! but most importantly, i would get all the rust done! oh, i could go on forever, but you get jist!
  2. seems that the standard clutch is up for the job, it better be cause im gonna give it a hard time, with more power than standard in 4WD most of the time, doing some agressive driving lol, good i aint driving it on the road! lmao!
  3. sorry, forgot to mention, im using this in rally conditions and stuff, and its not on the road anyway, so it wont see much tarmac! lol
  4. hi there everyone, i have been trooping posts and threads about performance clutches for the EA81, but i still sort of have a unfinished decision, im looking for a clutch that can be dumped when in 4WD, and generally used more harshly, but with the added power increase, are such ones as the centerforce dual friction clutches up to the job? or will i have to to a bit of adapting (i dont really want to, but i can if nessercary) ive also read about the XT6 clutches not fitting striaght away, but im still a bit in the dark about that, do they fit stright on? cause i might look at a 'stage 3' clutch or something, tell me what ya think! Cheers everyone http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=CTF%2DDF501001&N=700+4294925134+4294839071+4294865886+4294907499+4294899823+115&autoview=sku http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/85-94-XT-COUPE-1800-SERIES-TURBO-STAGE-3-CLUTCH-KIT_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33730QQitemZ8037871860QQtcZphoto http://www.clutchmasters.com/shop/?page=shop/browse&MakeModelID=1088&MakeID=117&Engine=1.8L+ENG+4WD+++++++++++++++++++++++98475&FromYear=1986&ToYear=1989 tell me of anymore if you find them!
  5. YOU CAN DOUBLE D CLTUCH AND HEAL AND TOE WOOOOOO! MANUALS RULE! it only took me about about 6 months to master manual, and i aint even legally driving on the road yet, ive been driving since i was about 11 and im just driving around farms and stuff, certainly has improved my offroad driving because of it! oh, and how can you not be able to drive a manual? if you said that where i live, you might as well not be able to drive! most of the tractors around here are all manual, so you really are considered useless if you cant drive a 'stick' shift!
  6. slightly off the car type, but my SJ 410 clutch creeks going all the way down LMAO! and it sometimes slips alot, or it can quite happily spin all 4 wheels (on mud of course) ive always wondered why now i know!
  7. arrrr yeah, cheers mate, i shall be asking him many questions! lol
  8. i was browsing around google video, where i have 2 of my vids, and i came across this bloody nice '79 DL, and WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO what a sound! sounds like a rally machine! with all the poping and stuff, whoever owns this, or know whats been done to it, can they say, as im highly admireing it! ROCK ON! WOOOO! http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-6270008469120104046&q=1979+subaru
  9. i just might! ive been thinking about O.Z, america, or moving up north where i am, and go from there! loads more space up there! lmao!
  10. that must have been such a giggle, shame theres so little of that sort of free for all rally/grasstrack racing over here, tis all catagorised over here and classed, no free range classes where you can enter what you like, ive thought about using my truck as a stage opener and closer where you drive along the stage (quick obviously!) with a siren and a PA making the stage live and ready to race and vice versa, but it would mean i would have to get involved with a club and stuff, tis all so complicated! you lucky americans get oober cool days like these! AHHHHH! im so envious!
  11. I second the flaps, BUT, ive found that the standard flaps which sorta wrap round the joinging metal part at the bottom of panals traps all the crap in there, and still rusts it, not as much without them, so i did the next best thing, put some rally flaps on mine! they look awesome! mine are about 2 1/2" off the ground lol, and you aint gotta worry about that little trapping bit, and im not a favourite of the standard flaps, and when offroading, the rally flaps flex waaaaay more, so you aint gotta worry bout them.
  12. this is some sound advise, the SPFI pistons are best for compression, EA71's are better than standard EA81 though, yes? the carbs need to be more focused on it also seems that the EA81 is not the greatest engine on earth, BUT its what i have, and something simple that i can work with, this is really the first time ive stripped a car engine this far, ive done mowers and stuff (yes, laugh all you want!) and i know how it all works, i would probably move on to ECU's and all that later on in life, i just wanna see if i can get this old kid stripped, cleaned, tuned, gasketed, and all back together again! tis a shame that the EA81 aint the best engine for high performance, but thats the way it goes and for EA81T parts, dont go there, ive NEVER seen one in real life, and i doubt i will, the closet thing is the gaske set ive got which says 'EA81(T)' lmao! as for this EA71 with the carb job, sounds like a mighty difference it has made, i got probs another say 7hp at a guess from doin that coathanger thing! lol, was getting 60 at a push across the field, after the mod, it was nearin 70! WOOOOOOOOO!
  13. yeah, an EJ would be really nice, but finding one for £700, hmm, might have a hard time, their aint that many GL imprezas and woteva else they come of around, loooooooooads of EJ20T's but i would ethier have to buy a wreaked one (cheapest one ive seen is probs about £3000) and if i were to look at an STi, well, theres no point, lol, would blow my wallet past mars and keep going on till it gets to pluto, lol BUT, i will look more into EJ's, ive always put them out of the question because of price, im only on 33 quid a week! plus some of the money in the bank, but even so, i shall be interested in the EJ route, would i have to do a drive train change over? or is the EA gearbox and diffs all up to the job?
  14. yeah, i spose u could say that, but i aint gonna give up that easy!
  15. some consistant good feedback on Ramenignes then, thats where im wanting to get the performance parts, and ive been thinking, well yeah, tis expensive, BUT it'll last, as it has to! lol, i can always put it in my other truck anyways, the main point of this build, is not just to bring the old thing back to life, but to get the experience of building a 'high performance' engine, lol and not just go and cheat, and spend money on a standard engine, and not modify it, compared to an engine that i already have, which i know i can work with, and mod, cause theres none of that bloody ecu gear flying aroound everywhere, im no mechanic yet, just i know me engines. cheers for the feedback everyone. oh, and yes, everything in england it a bit toy town compared to america, ive been to the states, and, well it dwafs here, that why whenever me and my mate see anything big, its not just big, its industrial sized, heavy duty, and most importantly AMERICAN SIZED, LMAO!
  16. alright there everyone, ive got the engine out of my suby, tis an EA81, 1988 UK model, im assumeing its exactly the same as everyone elses! lol right, so im looking at doing some performance work on it, the main reason was to basically refresh it, as after 19 years of use, its pretty carboned, crapped and just generally used, lol, it has been maintained, i can tell, theres always been plenty of oil in it, theres always been antifreeze in it, no cracks, no nasty noises, so i think its a good block to be working on, i just want to upgrade it a bit. i was looking at these mods for it -balanced bottom end -shave the heads (anyone know whats the best for rally application compression wise and stuff, i can get 98 octane at the pumps if that helps) -do a good bit of porting and polishing -possibly performance camshafts, valve springs, and lifters obviously all new rings and shells and some low friction assembly lube -are stainless valves worth it? or is it just as good to clean up the valves and make them oober smooth? theres also all the other bits and bobs -dual carbs, maybe -advancing the timing, i heard something around the 12 degree mark is good, am i right in saying that? correct me on any of this if im wrong! -silicone HT leads, some new NGK's, and ive got a new performance coil -ive also heard of lightend flywheels, and they can be done whilst having the bottom end balanced, so ive heard, also on a thread about these ive heard that they will -NOT reduce torque -NOT change the torque curve for the worse (WILL look better) -make it easier to stall -make your clutch easier to overheat (You are lightening your heat sink) -NOT change your gearing -NOT make it harder to accelerate up hill all that true? lol remind me if ive left something obvious out which is a performance tweak/mod all this is probably edging towards £700, thats probs about $1400 US, and to be honest, here in england, it aint to bader price, things are f**ing expensive over here, or they end up being so when shipped, lol my eventual aim for at least one of my trucks is sort of a rally spec machine, and to just plop a EA82 in (which are quite hard to find here) and i dont want the hastle of bloody ECU's and such, i just dont want the hassle, the same with EJ's but with these its the price! woo! maybe when im older and have the money though! give us your thoughts and opinions, please, no argueing! ive seen it happan enough times on other threads! ideally i wouldnt mind some useful info out of this anyone also know what sort of power i might be putting out at the end of it all? im sorta guessin the 110-120 mark, and hopefully more torque, im not worried bout any of this 'seems like lost torque crap' ill just buy a performance clutch, lol once again, things that are to put into consideration -98 octane pump fuel is no problem to get hold of, can get higher -this is more focused towards rally application, im getting the tyres and wheels, and having a stripped out race interior, bucket seats, 4 point race harness etc -everyday 'driveabilty' is not really much of a bother (how smooth it runs blah blah) basically i want it noisey, fast (for what it is) unforgiving and harsh oh, and whilst were at is, dose anyone know why rally cars pop and bang when changing gears and stuff, as far as i no tis the turbo, but, i have heard mk1 escorts and such doing the same, well thats what i would like mine to do LMAO! hope you all had a good christmas and have a fun filled 2007! soz for the long post, keeps ya entertained though! thanks for bothing to read to!

  18. LMAO! no, not many of them! though some of them are nice, like the old corvettes and cameros, and one of my favourite the el camino (obviously after subarus) I did know a guy with a corvette stingray but things like that they guzzle too much gas really, with 95 oct unleaded floating around 95p-£1 a litre, which in nearly $2 (U.S) you can see why we dont have too many V8 machines over here, although my step dad does have a grand cherokee! (yes a striaght 6, i know!) things over here mostly with V8's are range rovers, you do get the occasional proper V8 machines, and sometimes a hotrod, and im talkin USA hotrods here, model T's with funking great lumps in them! but my dad does have a ford anglia with a V6 in it, white with blue flames. anyways im drifting off the subject here, looks like im gonna have too make up some custom braketrey, but i do have a friend who might have an SVX alternator or something beefery than standard, but at least i know what im aiming for, cheers everyone Tom
  19. Ah, you see i might have a problem, do you class a GM alternator as something american, like a chevy one or somin or do you class that as everything, as vauxhall is part of GM, because getting hold of the US stuff over here aint easy and its expensive, but thank you for the info and advise, i shall search for something that could fit, and something with that power output, and i can always make up some braketery to attach it, cheers! 20. hi there everybody, im fairly new to this fourm and this is my first post/thread whatever its called! I was wondering if anyone could tell me the original output of an EA81 alternator as im draining my battery (which is only a year 1/2 old and seemed to work fine before...) I have all the usual bits working (lights, engine elctronics etc) but now i have a CB radio and a 25watt pioner tape player (which is actually quite good! to my suprise) and i have 2 55watt hella 550 compacts, and with these my juice rate is not keeping up, and im wanting to put 3 more lights on it, big ones, is this just because im not createing enough power or is it because its dischargeing slightly? if i hold it at about 4000rpm (its a guess, the UK specs dont have a rev counter) then it will just keep up. whats my problem? thanks all! Tom Sussex, UK
