  1. This is a huge help, pulled codes 12 and 14, will now dig deeper (and check up front as D1Driver suggested). Off to battle with the evil wire gremlin...
  2. Now that I'm up and running its time to address the air bag light thats been on for awhile...97 OBW, a mechanic told me it was probably the clock spring ($280 for part alone and local Subaru dealership), but I've never heard of that on a legacy. This car did go deer hunting a while back, took out the lt headlight, radiator, etc, but bag did not pop. light didn't come on until months later, so no obvious connection. I have an OBDII reader, but it can't access the srs computer. Disconnected the batt to clear codes, but it came back. I know I should just take it in and spend the $80 they (subaru) told me it would cost to run the codes (someone has to help pay for those expensive machines). But I was hoping there might be some things I could check first, maybe someone else had this happen to them. BTW, I had to replace ALL dash lights except in the gauges, even the 5 in the radio. Is this normal???? Yes, I checked the fuses...
  3. right, 2.5 bracket bolts right up to the 2.2, needed becase the newer compressor has a wider bolt pattern. Everything then lined up perfect...pully, tensioner, belt...even used the 2.2 tensioner because the 2.5's broke during removal. The 2.2 compressor would have worked, of couse, on the motor, but I don't know if the fittings to the car would hook up....do not have 2.2 compressor or the donor car to compare. Thought did not cross my mind since I did not want to discharge my ac....just removed the compressor and held it out of the way while sliding the motor out, plenty of room. didn't even take the hood off...
  4. Follow up on swap...only problems were... had to use ac bracket off 2.5, and ps lines did not match up to support brackets. Was very surprised how fast and easy this was to do...everything else, air box wiring, exhaust, vacuum lines, etc., pluged right in. Turned the key and.....started right up! Runs and drives like new. I can check back with milage and any codes thrown if anyone is curious, also took a few pics of swap. Want to say thanks to everyone who gave helpful info on how to do this, of all the auto forums I've been on this one has the most helpful and knowledgeable folks around. Thanks again...
  5. fix the headgasket issue and move on, it's annoying but you'll end up with a great vehicle. I can't..Motor is seized. I understand the 2.5 can be good, usually, but once bitten for me. 95 2.2 is in the truck, ready to go for the weekend, harvested from a "freshly killed" 95 at legacy. EGR and dual exhaust ports as advertised. Now...time to prepare...where's that cooler...
  6. This car was bought with 14,000 miles on it. Began to knock at 60,000 (piston slap?) and crap for mileage despite regular tune ups and maintaince (timing belts, etc.). Despite good care and catching gasket problems early, she tossed a rod at around 170,000. I know alot of folks would say thats pretty good, but I gotta call B.S.. A well maintained jap car should hit 200,000 easy. Go to a Honda forum and see how many people have this much trouble with one particular motor. I'm glad you have had good luck with your 2.5, but I do NOT trust these engines. 2.5 parts to go cheap coming up, watch the classifieds...or one aluminum boat anchor maybe...
  7. From what I see on similar threads, the 2.2 flywheel is 1/2" smaller. I think thats OK if you use a 2.2 starter...someone who knows more would have to help here...bueller...bueller...This really is a popular topic lately, with all these 2.5's going tits up...maybe there should be a sticky...I'll try to take alot of pics this weekend to donate.
  8. I'm going with Nathen's reply earlier that 95 AT cars have EGR, which agree's with other's posts in I found while searching around the forum. I'll let you know how it works out. Was that a JDM motor you bought? And was that 300 including shipping...or to ship? JDM engines scare me a little here because my 2.5 intake won't exchange...didn't want to get have to go hunting for odd's and end's. Good to hear you're up and running...how's the mileage?
  9. Bought a 2.2 from 95 legacy w/at today, wreck w/less than 80,000 rounds. Looks like the weekend is all booked up, I'll try to take some pics and post them next week...nurse..chainsaw please...
  10. Awsome! I am starting my search for a 95 at 2.2. Thanks for taking the time...and your detailed help, its nice saving countless hours when using someone else's experience. I will check back on this thread a few more times before getting the knife out, if there is anything else that would help PLEASE let me know...thanks again, great forum...(I can't get the smilies to work for me, so picture the dancing bananna thing here) Dave
  11. I have a decent 97 Outback with 170,000 miles, mt, and a very blown ej25. As most of you know, a used motor goes for about the same as a used Outback (if you can find one). I was about to junk this until I saw a previous thread in which someone else used a 95 2.2 with little mods. Anyone else out there done something similar? Is this the best year to use? Anyone use a newer engine? Besides the ps and ac bracket trouble will I have to use my current intake or exhauset manifolds? Sensors? Computer? Please...help, this car needs CPR...Paddles...Clear...beeeeeeeeeeeeep...
