  1. '97 Outback...got a great deal on a '96 2.2 to replace the now deceased 2.5. Problem is, 2.2 is out of a MT car, so no EGR. I know this has come up before, but searched and found nadda. Anyone know how to keep the CEL light from coming on...bypassing the EGR? Should be able to put a resistor in somewhere to fool the computer...anyone know how this can be done?
  2. So I pulled the timing covers off last nite and everything is lined up perfectly. I suppose the rod knock is bad enough to cause the misfire codes, since its got to play hell with the knock sensor. 2.2 swap...comin' up...
  3. My '95 2.2 (in '97 Outback) had an injector fail over the weekend. This engine has around a billion miles on it, but have access to some low mile '97 2.5 injectors at a good price (free). Are the '95-97 2.2 and 2.5 injecters the same? I looked up on Rockauto...same part numbers. But since they screw up my orders steady, am looking for a second opinion. Anybody know for sure?
  4. That makes sense, bent valves for sure then. This is starting to look like a good home for that spare 2.2 I've got laying around. I'll check back once its ripped apart...pending that title thing...
  5. So this 2.5 sounds like the rod is about to drop, a bad metallic rattle which gets worse with rpm. weird thing is, only codes in memory are po301, 2, 3, and 4 (missfire, all 4 cylinders). The lady hasn't found the title yet, so I probably won't pick it up/tear down it till later next week but...whats the chance its not a rod? Could this be a bad idler or tensioner? The owner can't remember how if the CEL was on before the rattle, but it came on suddenly and she pulled over and had it towed. Its a '97 outback wagon, with 140,000 miles, no other known problems or whatnot. 5 speed, so not a cracked flexplate. I know...its probably the rod...
  6. If you're doing the work yourself, nothing wrong with a lower mile used rack. I've got 250,000 on mine. If paying for the labor, would probably consider new...
  7. It was my first Subie, really, my step dad gave me his '97 Outback wagon, 5 speed, for free. It dropped a rod with 185,000 on the clock, so was converted to a 2.2. I've had 4 Subarus now, all green '97 wagons. Not on purpose, thats just how it happens when I'm looking to flip one with a bad engine for some extra $$. Most I ever paid was 700 for any of them. There are some smokin' deals out there, especially in mid summer.
  8. It was the sprockets!! He swapped the cam and crank gears and it fired right up. I couldn't find sprokets online to check, but it would be nice to know what years and models are compatible with each other for future ref. Thanks for all the help...another subie back to life...
  9. We don't have access to another ECU, he just bought the engine. We also checked the connectors, they do look the same but are not long enough to reach each other, we are confident they are connected properly. He's going to swap the timing and crank gears/pully off the old engine, and compression test it as well. I know the timing marks did not line up when checked prior to installation, and one of the timing covers was missing. This engine is out of a salvage/totaled car. We'll just keep playing with it and hopfully find the problem, keep the suggestions coming as we're just about out of ideas...
  10. This is for my brother, who bought a 2003 outback with 120,000 miles (with bad engine). He swapped in a 2005 Baja engine (both engines are 2.5), but used the Outback intake cuz they are different. It turns over but will not fire, has fuel and spark. Codes were PO340 and PO336, cam and crank sensors respectively. We put in extra sensors, but still get the cam code and it still will not fire. He checked the timing belt/alignment, we're going to check it again. Any ideas?
  11. My brother is using a set of "improved" 2nd gen headgaskets from allwheeldriveauto in Seattle, I know, OEM...bla bla... just wondering if anyone has heard of these guys or their product... oh yea... a link... http://allwheeldriveauto.com/a-better-subaru-25l-head-gasket-in-seattle/
  12. Do you know if the Hella's use the same bulb as the outback fog light? It would be nice to just plug them in....
  13. Anyone ever use these ebay fog lights? I can't get a link to work but they are aftermarket and only around 50 bucks...called "lancaster ltd" ...thinking about giving them a shot...
  14. '97 outback...wipers were frozen to the windshield...when I broke the driver's side loose it started working (forgot the switch was still on) but passenger side is now loose and does not work at all. did I break it...if I leave it sit will it heal itself? (didn't work for the headgaskets)...
  15. I use http://www.car-part.com a lot to find used parts...best way to see whats at the local yards before spending hours on the phone...
  16. I'm using HHO and am getting one billion mpg. With a few tweaks to the brown snake oil gas capacitor am hoping for 1.5 billion (fingers crossed) :heabng:
  17. I pulled another Outback about 100 miles on a two wheel dolly with my 2.2 conversion...did 60 down the freeway and got over 19 mpg. You shouldn't have too much trouble w/your boat...
  18. I towed my last project home with a 2 wheel dolly, just pulled the 4 bolts off the rear drive shaft at the diff. Saved a lot of gas over using a trailer...
  19. Fuel pump is replaced...runs pretty well! Head gaskets leak in true 2.5 fashion...but have a 2.2 ready to go. Should be a nice little car..body is good and even has the cold weather package. Thanks again for the help!
  20. There was signal from the two wires from ecu to ignitor...but not at coil...the plug in for the ignitor was pretty crusty and when I plugged everything pack together there was spark . No fuel tho, so I pulled the pump out and jumped it with the battery (no good). Am going to order up a new pump today...
  21. Theres the dead horse...codes are gone. I didn't know they were the green ones!!! what a dumb@ss. So power at the coil...no pulse from the ignitor...zero fuel pressure. I'll test the ignitor etc. like that article you posted shows, thats good info. Thanks for all the help so far, I would be even more lost w/o..
  22. No, haven't checked for fuel pressure...will admit I've been lazy about this. I was betting that since others have had these exact same 9 codes pop up at once that there was going to be a known cause. I'll crack into it more as time allows this week. BTW...swapped out the computer last nite with one from my other '97 OBW just for fun (had dust off the haynes manual)...engine lite was flashing like mad as soon as the battery was connected...but no codes. Then I turned it over to check for spark...checked codes again...same 9 showed up.
