  1. Don't get me wrong, the new upholstery was nice, but with the plaid you KNOW you're sitting in a late 70's - early 80's Subie. The driver seat on mine is torn, (blue plaid) and I found another back on ebay for 1.00 that nobody bid on. It is for passenger side, but I am having the upholstery shop use that to fix mine.
  2. Did you ever hear what happened to the other engine? I went back to the first page and looked at all the pics you posted in progression. It was an awesome BRAT! Very very nice restore! (although I really dig the plaid seats) I haven't had my Brat out of the storage for 21 months! I have been driving my Subaru 360 Pick Up.
  3. I had my Brat down there a couple years ago. (Towing it behind my Titan) I was working in Key West for almost 2 years, then worked up in West Palm (renovating the Crowne Plaze). Didn't drive it around much in West Palm though. I had it ALL OVER Key West. (Along with my 360 pick-up). Cheers! Oh hey, I saw that Brat on eBay. Nice Brat! Doesn't look it's too far from being VERY nice! Good Find!
  4. The roll bar does bolt where you are saying, and then the seat belt bolts to the roll bar I guess you could say. The extension ends bolt right to the top of the wheel wells, (not real strong there either). You have to remember the roll bar is more for looks than function. (unless your function is to hold your off road lights)
  5. Sorry about this guys, the manual has been scanned FOREVER and I forgot to post about it. I have been so busy that last summer my BRAT never even saw the light of day. It's in my storage and I only went and started 3 times in the last 15 months! (never even pulled it out)! (Guess that keeps the dash pretty nice) Anyway, I just sent the file to MilesFox, so I'm sure as soon as he gets it on his server, you'll all have access to it. Jon

  8. I take it someone removed the originals? They would probably be hard to find, but it would be nice to have originals. I see them on eBay every once in a while.
  9. I won't base my opinion based on the miles alone, but the motor is FILTHY for only 20,000 miles. I have a 2006 Nissan Murano that is driven in the snow every day, has 20,000 miles and the motor is so clean you could just about eat off it. A 20,000 mile engine (any year) shouldn't be covered in oil (including the valve covers) to the point that you can't even tell what color they are. To me, the only thing that looks like a 20,000 mile car is the drivers seat, there isn't noticeable wear on it......then again, how about some really high quality, clear pictures if you want to sell something! my 2 cents
  10. I would tell them that as long as you are providing another motor the one they are taking out is YOURS, period, end of story. And, if it really is bad, why would they, or he, want it?
  11. I surely don't have all the experience some of you guys do with these engines, but I do have some. There are a couple things that could have happened IMO. Probably the most likely is a bad gasket, or he was trying "to see what it could do" too soon. Also could have possibly been a sticking thermostat and it got too hot. I don't think it's your torque wrench!
  12. I would have thought you would have got more than that also. I paid about the same for my 79, three or four years ago. Mine needs paint, but other than that has never been touched.
  13. In Michigan they are almost EXTINCT! I had one for my very first car (a 1979 BRAT DL) in 1988. That one rotted out to the point it wasn't safe and my dad made me junk it. I bought another one about 4 years ago that came from New Hampshire, but it has NO rust and is ALL original. To let you know how rare they are here..... I haven't seen a BRAT on the road in MI, in probably 8 years. (other than mine) LOL
  14. Sorry, I should have included this picture so you could see where it hooks up to the compressor. Your A/C is the same as mine, it's a Mini York 206 compressor.
  15. Does it look like this, except black instead of green? It attaches to the top of the AC compressor
  16. I am almost positive that it goes to the A/C. If my brat wasn't down at the storage, I'd go take a look. Next time I go there, I will take a pic of the same part on mine, still hooked up and plugged in.
  17. no oil check valve on a 360. Oil is pumped into the main bearing and slung up onto pistons, it all burns off eventually. are you a 360 club member?
  18. Subaru 360's don't have valves. They are 2 stroke! Also, since they are 2 stroke, they don't have oil in the crankcase either. Are you sure it's oil? Is the line from the oil pump hooked to the crankcase or the carb? Was it running before and just started doing this? More info is needed.
  19. Let me be the first to congratulate you on your purchase and dive into Subaru's. I am a Subaru enthusiast, however, I am not one of the more frequent posters on this board. I bought my first Subaru BRAT when I was 16, went 15 years without one, now I have a mint, original 79 brat and 2 1969 360's. On to the issues with your new found treasure. The hum is probably not the transmission, I haven't heard that. It would be more likely to be a wheel bearing. Secondly, being that low on coolant may cause overheating. I don't think it's necessary to use any "special" antifreeze. You should check the basics, the radiator, the fan, the thermostat, etc. How long had the BRAT been sitting? You will find an answer to any question you may have here! Again, congrats! Now post some pics!
  20. Got mine at auto zone in Key West. I think they are either 4 or 5 inch, not 7 inch ones (those look HUGE relative to the rest of the BRAT). If I can find the picture, I will post it.
  21. Is the DL/GL setup not the same there? Or are there no GL's?
  22. Best I can remember, it is in with the cluster of wires, I think there are 2 sets. You can't plug it in wrong.
  23. I don't know what kind of car you have, but in 1988 when I got my license, I had a 79 Brat DL. I went to the junk yard and found the instrument cluster out of a 79 Brat GL (the GL cluster has tach included, instead of just a HUGE speedo). It plugged right in, and the wire for the tach was already there. Maybe that's an option for you, I don't know.
