  1. 99 is also a year that speedo heads went bad to, intermintant working or they just quit, go out in a parking lot and make sharp turns tightly to, go left to right and right to left, see if you feel any binding or vibation. Have the car looked over to for oil leaks, most common are valve cover gaskets, front crankseal and oil pump oil ring, camseals, and of course rear main seal and seperator plate, which are located in the back of the engine, the only way to tell is if you see oil leaking in back of the oil pan and going onto the crossmember. Other than that its a great year, I had a 99 and loved it, so check those things and your good.
  2. Hello all, I am having trouble posting pictures on here, can someone help me so i can download some pictures of my subaru getting the engine out and a new shortblock getting put in, thanks any help would be appreciated.
  3. Nope, I wouldn't really yes wheel bearings were crappy in them, headgaskets to went in them also, worked at a subaru dealer for years and wouldn't buy a forester from 1998 to 2002, to me, issues also were oil leaks as usual though.
  4. I am a happy subaru owner, I was having a bad engine knock that did not go away when it warmed up, as we all know subarus have those knocks! But mine seemed to be steady and much worse, and my friends and family were mentioning things like, Why does that sound so bad? What is that ticking noise? Is that your engine knocking? So I decided to have a local dealership look at it and see what may be wrong further, Haddad Subaru was the dealer I took it to for diagnosis here in mass. So I left it overnight as it is worse in the morning, so they called me and told me they yes they had to tear down the engine and see if it needed pistons or a shortblock, so I picked up my rental as that is paid for to under my warranty, so Haddad Subaru called me and told me they were going to order a new shortblock! yeah I was happy, I was hoping that was what they were going to say. So currently I have my rental which by the way is very nice to I have a 2008 Toyota Carolla, it is so sweet I really like it! So I hope to post some pictures of my Legacy soon as it was in pieces at the dealer!
  5. I will be the odd ball of them all! lol! 2004 subaru legacy auto, headgaskets went at 37k, and people think that they were ok by 2004, I tend not to be a strong believer of that, some friends of mine have a 2004 and they had them go to,
  6. Check for the following also once warmed up, take to a parking lot and drive in circles tightly and see if you feel any vibration and torque binding to see if transfer clutches are ok. Check the underneath for common oil leaks such as camseals, crankseal, oil pump o ring, and valve covers on the sides, and the rear baffle plate leaking to, they had plastic ones in those years which leaked and they usually leaked in back of the oil pans and then onto exhaust.
  7. Hi there I had the same problem with my 99 outback and had found the same issue occuring and at that time is was under warranty, and they had to replace the transmission. The problem had started when I was driving up the driveway it would hesitate and when I drove uphills and downhills it had a hard time shifting into gears, the technician did duplicate it. So I did get a reman transmission, the transmission fluid and filter were fine to, I had them done also but it did not help. I am not sure how you are going to take care of the problem without having to rebuild or just replace it, but if you go through a dealer thats great, I did but when my transmission was replaced the transfer clutches started to bind in that one so they had to replace it again so I went through 3 of them, good times, thank god for warranty at that time. I don't know but 1999 seemed to be a rough year for outbacks with transmission issues and speedometer problems. Keep in touch andf let us know what you do.
  8. Well good times here today, I was at my mechanic's for my normal oil and filter change and check over, and he noted that my headgaskets are actaully starting to leak oil on the driver's side, its odd to because lately I have been smelling burnt antifreeze and it comes and go, but smell very noticeble. So needless to say I went to my local subaru dealer and indeed I need to do headgaskets, they are doing both sides, the funny thing is to at my tune up the conditioner was added in, and its so obvious it didnt work because there is some antifreeze mixing in with the oil to that was found and thats what the antifreeze burning smell to so its very interesting, the amazing part, 2004 subaru leagcy here 38k, so its all covered and my rental is covered to, I had purchased a extened warranty to, good thing, of course I did it to as a security blanket to.
  9. I have a 2004 subaru legacy sedan and I was washing my car this weekend and noticed that the rear lens had a slight bit of moisture in it and a little bit of water, but seems that is has dryed out now and no more water nor moisture. Seems wierd to me, to much water pressure when I washed the car? Sprayed top much at it? Did fine some water in the trunk on the mat but nothing below where the spare tire was. So I will keep my eye on it when it rains, I know that I have not seen any water in there before nor leaks but I would appreciate some feedback and helping me out to figure out what to do, or is there anything to perform to figure it out. Thanks
  10. Check for oil leaks in the underneath such as crankseal and the oil pump and camseals, and also check the valve cover gaskets on the sides, you might also want to check in the back of the oil pan for another oil leak coming from the seperator plate, which is in the back of the engine, they were plastic and they replaced them to metal due to the problems with them leaking, other than that all the other stuff that everybody mentioned is what to look for.
  11. hi guy my sitaution was not the tubes nor tracks it was the gasket around the sunroof glass that had split and it was all one piece thats why it was leaking.
  12. Hi all, good times here! So here is the deal we had a bad storm last sunday and I was on my way to my moms house and I opened my sunshade for the sunroof and I was driving down the road and I started to get drips on my head and I was like oh no here we go, so with that said I got to my parents and had my dad spray the top of the car down, and yup it was leaking. I was so pissed, of course I was leaving for vacation the next day, so I called haddad subaru here and asked them if they had anything open for the week and they said yes, so I had my parents bring it downand leave it there, so the dealer called me while I was on vacation and told me yes the sunroof itself is leaking and needs repalcement, great! So my extended warranty that I purchased when I got the car through subaru the dealer said that this is not a covered item under this warranty, of course. So the dealer said to leave it with them for the week cause it was raining here and would leak and they would leave it in the garage for me so they ordered a new sunroof and installled it in for me, the nice part about this sitaution was the dealer took the car in right away and diagnoised it and kept it there for me while I was away so I really appreciate the dealer for that. I am in touch with subaru on this 4 year old car needing a sunnroof, this is not right, so subaru is going to help me out I have to send them the repair order and they are going to help me out which is great! So good times with this car 4 years old 38k on it.
  13. Hi all I have a 2004 legacy and it has 38k on it and I did have the 30k tune up on it but I was wondering if the power steering fluid should be replaced to? I have not changed it on the car yet and was not sure of the condition and severity of the case. So I would appreciate some feeback to see if it needs to be done with my next oil change. Thanks!
  14. well other points would be oil leaks, such as the rear sperator plate leaking onto the exhaust, the rear plates have been plastic and they have switched them to metal, one way to tell is the leak starts in back of the oil pan then onto the exhaust, the engine or trasmission would have to be removed in order to replace the plate and also do the rear main seal to while you are there. One last thing is the front crankseal and the camseals, and also the oil pump o ring and reseal to, and also check the valve cover gaskets to as they leak to man. I had a 1999 outback and all this happened to me and is all common in these. good luck!
  15. My 2004 subaru leagcy I want to do a radio swap and its another subaru one, so it should be easy and I checked to see if it will fit my model and it will. It 's out of a 03 outback to my 04 leagcy and I am nervous to pull everything apart. I started to yeserday and I ran into prblems pulling the bezel off arounf the radio and was nervous I would break something, so please help me out so I dont have to have the dealer do it, to save me some money!
  16. Hello all, I own a 2004 subaru legacy with 37k on it and I was washing it and had noticed that there were little crack marks all over my hood and this was also when I was waxing it to, well, I do remember then when this car was on delivery to the customer from the dealer there were some scratches on it and they had wet sanded it to it a certain point and I think that they went to far on the hood and the clear coat was starting to crack so I am going to have the whole hood redone, its going to the body shop to be stripped to metal and redone and repainted june 2-4 its not to bad either its costing $350.00. That way I will feel better to myself.
  17. I know that in the year 2000 and up they were all changed back to metal because of them leaking and having to be replaced so much. The plastic ones were bad man thats all they was leak I can say it was not a good thought on subarus part of that plastic plate. Considering they all started leaking at one point or another, when I worked at the dealer that was one of the main oil leaks that came about in the older models 95-99 roughly.
  18. I spotted one at dunkin donuts yesterday here in massachusetts, western region of the state bought from a local subaru dealer. I would assume base model because this one had them ugly hubcaps that subaru came out with recently for the base models for forester and legacy and outback. I am impressed though with the redesign, they stand out to me looking strong and also look to me as a aggressive handeling suv. I will have to go test drive one soon to see for myself, but they do look sweet of course I would go for the upgraded model with everything included, the model with alloys, not hubcaps, lol!
  19. I can not say that what I said was bad advice man, hey I call the shots as I see it, its up to the person as what they want to do its not like they have to do this, not all repairs may work.
  20. Yup a common problem from the dealer I worked at I seen this, what happens is the rear finishing lens needs to be replaced which is the whole unit there really is no other fix, you could try other methods but I assure you it will probably not hold for to lang man, so save yourself the hastle and just replace it okay.
