just need an opinion
i also drive to mt hood quite a big in my 91 loyale 5 speed. personally what i would like for the mountain is a early legacy 5 speed. thats your best bet. the alltime allwheel is good in snow and ice and the 5speed is safer/more reliable than an auto. and the ej22 engine will get you up those hills nice and easy. and generally the autos out of the loyales/gl/dl are crap and the ea82t's arent reliable ive heard and only put out 115 hp. id hold out for a n/a loyale gl or dl or a legacy manual SG

What should I pull from an '87 GL for a '92 Loyale?
pretty much everything is different will work in your car. little things like the climate control switch is flat in the GL's and round in the loyales. theres the grey buttons on the climate control they will swap right over. dual rage swap is an easy swap. make sure you grab the mounting bracket from the dual range console your loyale will not have it and you need that to mount the console. and if you can find a dualrange lever from an 85 they are way cooler than they ugly ones after that

1986 Subaru GL Wagon - push button 4wd to D/R possible?
me and GD did the auto to manual DR swap into my loyale. i dont the switch hooked up and its my daily driver. runs fine. but i did use a cruise control switch i will wire to my ecu in the netural switch spot so when the clutch is out it thinks its in gear and when its in it thinks its in netural. not a big hassle just a small hurdle. best of luck on your swap
