  1. I tried the search feature and found nothing in regards to adjusting the front suspension height. As you can see the front of the BRAT rides really low. Granted the rear has slightly bigger tires, but it shouldn't that drastic.
  2. Where are there OHV's in California? Or as our Gov would call it Kahlifooahnya There is an State Vehicular Rec Area called Hollister located near San Jose, the other OHV in the middle of the state is Prairie City 20 miles east of Sacramento. The Bureau of Land Management also has a bunch of them. What is a central location for everyone? BW
  3. you would have to flip one the diffs over. I saw an episode of "Junkyard Wars" where a drag car they made lost all forward gears and could only go backwards, after one run in reverse, they flipped the diff over and it went forward.
  4. thanks for the input. A low speed rock crawler would probably do ok w/part time 4wd. Has anyone ever welded the front diff?
  5. I saw a 5spd D/R in the local pick a part from an 88 wagon. Not sure if the engine or the tranny was the reason it was in the the bone yard. I will try to see how much it costs. BW
  6. I have this interesting idea wanted to put out there. What is you took a EA82T engine w/a FWD tranny and mounted it in the middle of a buggy frame, then instead of having the axles power the wheels, you make them power two differentials, making it basically a 4X4. I realize theoretically it is possible, would the engine/tranny be able to handle the extra load or would that depend on the diffs used. If I could find two soob LSD that would be great, but realistically I would probably have to go w/something from Toyota. Certain Celicas, Corollas and Supra/Cressidas all had LSD. Here is a sketch of what I have in mind. BW
  7. Ok... so I think I scored an entire 86 Gl drivetrain/suspension etc. It's a EA82t w/the 5sp d/r. I saw the thread that alchemitis put together about engine swaps. Very helpful. Here are some questions: 1) Would it be a good idea to do the suspension lift at the same time as the engine swap or should I wait a bit. 2) I heard from a friend who rallys that you can bead weld your chassis for increased stiffness. Is that a good idea to do while the engine is out? 3) Since the engine it out, what other things should I do? 4) Anyone want to come to Los Angeles and help with an engine swap? Will be offering a BBQ and the old EA81 engine and 4 sp tranny to whoever needs it and comes to help 5) With a heartier engine, what other mods can be done? Thanks for your attention and input BW
  8. ok I give up.. anyone have a place that can host some pictures?
  9. So I went to this OHV park called San Gabriel Valley OHV yesterday. My sister was in town for Spring Break and I wanted to show her how awesome a soob was in the dirt. She has 2003 Jeep Rubicon. We get there and the first thing we see is a Ford Ranger 2wd stuck in the stream crossing. The guy has himself buried all the way down to his rear bumper. After he was moved out, people gather to see if I would get stuck. Course, soobs rule and I went through the stream w/little problem. My engine sputtered b/c I forgot to switch my intake to my stock air box. Went around doing to soob nuts and splashing through the mud. At the end of the day, She was very impressed with how the soob handled. She has no plans in getting rid of her Jeep, but then again I have no plans on getting rid of my soob. In fact I plan to build up a BRAT to woop her Rubi's MOPAR rear. Look for a future post..."550 dollar BRAT w/2k? in mods, out performs 20k Rubicon." Here are some pics of the adventure..OBD Azusa Run
  10. Keep at it. When I first bought the BRAT my roommate was a doubter. Now's he's more excited about restoring it and lifting it than I am. BW
  11. more pics. link Wheels installed and fender fixed. Plan to paint the re-paint the wheels white. Any tips on how to do this? I tried to look in the "how to keep your soob alive" book for wiring schematics for the fuel and temp gauge but they didn't have anything.
  12. I found a GL wagon for 300. It's in really good condition. The problem I have is the law of Diminishing returns. With a Impreza OBS and a BRAT, the need for another Soob in the stable is a little ridiculous to the non-soob fanatic. It does however have rust free parts and a D/R 5sp tranny. Is it worth it just to get the car and do a tranny swap into my BRAT? The thing that I would hate to do is take apart a perfectly good working Soob.... Thoughts and comments? BW
  13. Decided to call the car BOB b/c of the lisence plate. I got the pics of the Brat developed. Couldn't figure out how to post on USMB so I put them in the BRAT group on yahoo. Yahoo Brat group Things are going slow b/c of the rain, YES it does rain in LA. Work has been crazy busy too so there is no time to monkey wrench.
  14. When your dreams are to prove to the world the Subarus are the most capable vehicle in all types of terrain.
  15. I noticed when driving that if I were to pump the gas pedal the tranny lurches and makes a clunking noises. It shifts fine and with smooth application of the gas pedal, there is no noise. ODO is frozen at 220k. Is this normal wear and tear for this mileage? What can be done to make it drive smoother? Also, when the 4wd level is disengaged, the transfer case makes a LOUD clunking noise. Is it normal for there to be a clunk when the 4wd is disengaged? I use to have a Jeep and there would be a little clunk when the transfer case was disengaged, but this clunk sounds really bad Also at what speed can you drive in 4WD?
  16. congrats on the BRAT. I picked up one on Thursday. I am having the same problem as you in regards to the tailgate trim. I may go to a metal fabricator and see if a piece can be made for it. Will keep you appraised. BW
  17. I found a 1st Gen BRAT in a JY. CALI CAR, All of the body panels are there. From what I saw, the bottom of the front fenders near the door are rusted badly, but the rest looks like it's in pretty good shape. I can send my roommate to go and get parts. BW
  18. I got the BRAT. After further review, here are the items on the fix list. 1) odometer, speedo not working. 2) heater 3) no air coming out of the window defoggers vents 4) rear wheel bearing (passenger side) 5) tailgate chrome 6) 4wd disengagement makes a clunking noise 7) bumper, left fender dented Scrounging through the JY this weekend yielded left fender, bumper, wheel bearing, old soob white spoked wheels, BRAT rear seats, and a brushguard. Pics coming soon. BW
