first gen BRAT spotted.....(purchase secured)
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ohh.. yeah, that's the ugly... not sure if it runs. It ran when it was pulled into the spot, but that was back in 1996. Luckily it's only about 1 mile from my house so we are going to hook up a tow chain to it and pull the sucker back to my pad. Put a little oil in the cylinder and hand turn the crank a few times. Pour some starting fluid in the carby, drain the gas tank and put some good gas in and cross our fingers. BTW any suggestions for a name? the plate has the three letters R-Q-P. I originally thought of our Quipie, like in Quipie doll, but that would just imasculate the BRAT. Maybe Astro, as in Astrodroid RQ-P1...? BW -

Well spent a few hours w/my roommate tracking the owner. Found out who he was and secured the purchase of the BRAT for $200.00 Let the banana start dancing:banana: So here are the details. Here is the good, 1978 black/gray BRAT, EA71 engine, pretty clean, about 100k on the odometer. Body has no rust. Interior is pretty clean. Bed has all of the chrome trim and the seat belts, head rests and the carpet intact. Since I scavenged the jump seat a while back, I will get those put in. Jackman shoes all around. Has a roll bar (not sure if it's factory) and the A push bar. Here is the bad. front bumper narfed. paint severely faded, driver side and tail gate door handles are broken, dent in the ps side, dent in the tail gate, missing 4wd mud flap on the d/s. Overall SWEET FIND :headbang: BW -
SOCAL RUN to Hungry Valley May 22nd
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Will be scouting the area on the 24th. For those of you who may not know... I am about to take the plunge and get engaged. So May 22nd will be the day that I plan to ask her. BW -
Balancing Subaru and life... (SHE SAID YES!!)

Well, I talk to a vendor that comes into work and I got a nice ring for 250 down and 97 bucks every paycheck for the next 8 paychecks. The cool thing is that he let me take the ring home with me I guess I can still justify spending $$ for my soobs cause I am getting ready for the off-roading trip So anyone in the Los Angeles area want to go wheeling and see me get engaged, MAY 22nd at HUNGRY VALLEY SVRA. Scavenger Hunt and other activities are in the works. Maybe a hill climbing contest or something like that. -

hmm... called the alleged owner yesterday and found out that he has no idea about the BRAT. He suggested I try to find the owner of the property. So I get to spend my day off tracking him down -

Thanks for all of the input. I am trying to get her into some of the things that I do. She's been pretty supportive of my hockey playing and has made almost every game. She is also willing to go off-roading with me on the 22nd. I guess I will get interested in her hobbys, like ceramic doll collecting and what she finds is important, like dressing nice and looking groomed. I could also print out that "How to deal with subaru addiction" thread and give it to her. Also introduce her to the Subaru Widows board. BW -
So here I am in the midst of working on a BRAT and my OBS and dating. Now things are going really well and I am looking to get engaged possibly on May 22nd. I am taking her off-roading at Hungry Valley and were doing a scavenger hunt So that really puts a damper on my plans to 1) make a Rubicon bashing BRAT and 2) make my OBS more outback rugged. :-\ How do some of you guys balance the two. BW Here's a pic of of us

Great Video Isn't it funny how we drive right into obstacles and mud/water holes that people usually try to avoid? bW

Off topic reply: I shaved the bumper to increase my approach angle. I got tired of scuffing the bumper skin. Skid plate will mount below the lower bumper beam and angle back to the lower radiator support. Then I will probably mount the back to either engine crossmember or something back there. Haven't thought it completely out yet b/c need to learn how to weld. I am copying a 2nd Gen pushbar that I have for the BRAT. I saw pics of your car sorry for your loss.

Well you could try what I did and go to any 4x4 store and ask if they carry items for a subaru. They usually do one of two things... Look at you dumbly.. or "laugh." I plan to put nerf bars for my OBS. I am going to measure the distance between the wheels and get a neft bar from a truck that will fit. Mounting has not been addressed since I don't know what brand I will get. I am guessing I can cut/remove the current moulding between the wheel wells and find the frame. I could weld the bars to the frame at that point or mount them with really big bolts. BW

Got a chance to look at it close up. looks like it only have the head rests, roll bar, carpet and the seat belts in the rear. Engine looks like a ea71 or ea811 couldn't tell. I am guessing 71 b/c the air filter looks different from the EA81 I have. The plates were last registered in 1996. Ohh and best of all it has Jackman rims all the way around. Didn't get to speak to the owner yet, but will do it in a few months, the way I figure it, it's been sitting there so long, it will probably sit there longer. I will have the means to make an offer then. -
I am planning to check out Hungray Valley SVRA in April and May. I want to do a scavenger hunt there on May 22nd. I will scout out the area on either April 17th or the 24th. BW

Wow. I have to go visit you when I am home next. My parents live in Fairfax, VA. I may have to take my brother and his jeep over there and have you kick his butt in some off road runs.... Which Jeep would you like to have for dinner? -
COME ONE, COME ALL..... Let's do a run at Hungry Valley. So far I have three Soobs line up. I will be going to scout the area on April. I anticipate the we will probably have the whole range of vehicles coming ranging from stock to off-road moded. I will keep that in mind when I scout out the area. Who's up for it? BW

here is a side shot -
Hopefully this can be something I can convince the owner to part with. My roommate spotted it sitting behind the fence. It looks like it still has the back seats and the head rests.. It would look great with a new paint job and some wheels... But the best thing that would make it look good is if it were sitting in front of my house. Will be talking to the owner this week...

A friend of mine recently came up to me and asked me about the soob that his parent's gave him. So I take a look and it's a Full Time 4WD turbo GL-10 5 speed, with the LSD rear. It has a Diff Lock switch next to the shifter. Does that lock the front diff? Since it's from California there is no rust and only 40k on the ticker..... Now to try and convince him to sell it.... BW

one additional thought on suspension. Has anyone ever tried to use Impreza struts and springs on a 82 car? I am getting some Legacy Outback struts for my Outback Sport. This will give me an extra inch or so clearance. That leaves me with extra struts from the OBS. I will look into whether the BRAT will be able to accept the struts. BW

THanks for the info. I found the bolts you were talking about. Will also try to get matching tires up front. \ BTW what's the largest size I can run w/stock rim and suspension? bw

mid-engine soob buggy? Thoughts comments
s'ko replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's a great philosophy. I guess the main reason I was kicking the idea around was b/c I am getting a load of parts from someone and I will have a spare engine and suspension parts lying around. There are lot's of obstacles right now to the project. 1) I am trying to pay off debt. 2) I already have a BRAT that I am playing with. 3) I have a g/f to take out. (You can see my priorities, huh? ) -
I am planning a HUNGRY VALLEY OHV trip in May. Hungry Valley is located in Gorman. That's like an hour north of Los Angeles. I need time to do some mods on my OBS and my BRAT. From the website, it looks like a pretty good place. I will probably do a recon run before to get an idea of what the play ground looks like. So far I can think of three soobs going. My OBS, my buddies Outback Legacy, and the BRAT. Probably take along some picnic/BBQ supplies so we can feast. Will start a separate thread when the time approaches. BW
