  1. Very true. My dad and younger bro once towed a lifted CJ7 w/an Xterra. Dad went around a turn and hit the rumble strip. Over corrected and the cars started to ocillate. From the front it looked like the Xterra was swaying left and right. For the rear (where my mom was freaking out and shouting into the CB) the CJ was drifitng about 1/2 a lane left and right. I was thinking of driving the BRAT on the hills. I dont want to stress the engine too much going up and the brakes going down. Found a tow bar for under $150 and I need to get a class two hitch to make it work.
  2. SVX no specific year, has to be AWD version. Color would be the white/black one. Why? b/c is looks like a exotic car. Leather int, great view with those big windows. flat 6 engine:slobber:
  3. I am at 216k. Bought it in Feb 2004 w/a non-working Speedo/Odo. Looked into it and the cable was disconnected from the tranny. Previous owner was a delivery guy for a auto parts supplier. From what I can tell original tranny and engine. Carby was rebuilt recently and both rear wheel bearings were replaced. Just did a front axle rebuild. BW
  4. I have a 5spd OBS. Planning to attend the WCSS6 show and I would like to also bring my BRAT. BRAT is suppose to weight 2500.oo depending on who you ask. Do you think it's a good idea to intermittently tow the BRAT. Not sure the BRAT can make the 15 hour drive. Thoughts and comments? BW
  5. nice man. It's a great feeling when a project gets completed.. So what's next on your drawing board? BW
  6. Got hooked with my OBS. Loved the way the car handled on road and was very impressed with the off-road capabilities. Coming from a Jeep background, I appreciate the on-road handling characteristics even more. My 82 BRAT has yet to see dirt, soon to change this weekend . But it's easy to work on, parts are readily avaliable either here or at the PAP. The best part is going places and having the big rigs look at you in wonder and amazement as they think "What the heck are you doing back here?" I also appreciate the underdog status.
  7. According to the company mainstreetbanner.com their charge is 200 for one custom 1 color flag. If you order 6 it's 300.00. Now Carrot top charges 195 for set up charge for a custom job w/mim order of 6 @ 90 per flag. That's way too insane. I am going to see how hard it will be to do a DIY flag. Even if it's not a 3x5. I am going to check some of the local banner places to get their costs. Will post when I get the info. bW
  8. I wanted to get a flag made for WCSS6 to mount on the back of my BRAT. I called a place and their set up charge for 1 flag is 200 bucks. 6 flags would be 300.00 bucks. the flag size is 3 by 5. The flag design I have in mind is the old school logo with SUBARU at the bottom. Probably be a two sided flag. I will post the rough sketch of the flag when I have it. Anyone interested?
  9. I was raised in Virginia and I don't remember seeing that many soobs on the road. In So Cal there are a good number of older soobs, but the newer Impreza, Legacy models are by far the most common. Old/New, East West, it's all Soob and it's all good. BW
  10. I just added my 1982 BRAT to my insurance policy. The company wants an additional 90 bucks a month for it. I only pay 131.30 a month for my fully covered 2k OBS Impreza.... Now I take the bus to work and I drive only on the evening and weekends. At most I will go 15-20 miles a day. So what is everyone else paying? BW
  11. whooooo rahhh Marine. Take care of yourself and back safe. BW
  12. I like the book idea. It would be good to even make something like "how to keep my subaru alive" I just tackled a CV boot swap and the first one took me 3 hours b/c I really wasn't sure what I was suppose to do and how to do it. Running into similar problems with my first rear wheel bearing swap. Simple write-ups on basic maintenance would be really helpful for newbie wrenchers. Then you could get into the more advanced topics like suspension, engine, tranny mods. just my 2 cents. BW
  13. http://www.zdmak.com/wbstore/main.asp item number VO-SU022 BTW I called a local soob shop. Tool will not fit newer soobs. Also I do not think that the ring was completely unstaked. Will make sure that it's completely unstaked before I try again.
  14. Found a place that sells the pin socket for 21 plus sh and tax.the description said that is would fit all subaru except for the justy. Does that mean that I can also use it for my OBS? BW
  15. Ok so I am a doofus... Unstaked the ring nut. Now I cannot figure out which direction it goes. CW or CCW? Everything else went pretty smoothly. I had to get a new chisel set b/c the original punch set I bought was junk and I ended up breaking/bending the punches. THanks for all of the great help. I am gaining a lot of confidence in my wrenching abilities. BW
  16. DL here too... But somewhere in it's lifetime, some decided to put in some after-market pop tops. So what does that make it???
  17. There is a glitch in the matrix..... I had a meeting w/Tonya and our minister. There are some things that they are concerned about. Mostly is my mismanagement of my money. We are both pretty loose about how we spend our money, but I am more of a spend thrift than she is. So the plan is to let someone help me with my $$$ for six weeks or so and help me to get some better habits (ie- no buying random soobs b/c it's a good deal :-p .) Good thing I am VERY happy w/the BRAT. So that is the deal. We may not even go wheeling b/c the people that we were going with have flaked out. Ohh well, the BRAT needs to have the rear wheel bearing replaced and a front DOJ boot replace anyways. Will be looking at mid to end of June. May have to re-think the idea of how to pop the question. BW
  18. Unstake? When you say unstake, what do you mean. Is it pretty self-explanatory if I take a look at the rear axle? Thanks
  19. What size is the "pin socket"? and can I buy it from local auto parts store.? Thanks BW
  20. :-p Right on. Good thing I asked before I tackled it. Thanks for all of the help. BW
  21. This is just to verify what needs to be done to change the rear wheel bearings for my 1982 BRAT EA-81 Chassis. 1) Remove rear wheel 2) remove pin at rear diff 3) remove castle nut and remove rear axle 4) Take punch and tap out inner and outer wheel bearings (will not be re-using them) 5) carefully tap in the new bearings. Being careful not to damage the races. 6) Reassembly in reverse. Is that about it? Is there anything that I am missing? Thanks Bosco
  22. Got the back seat in place. Ended up going to Home Despot and buying to u-bolts with a 1/8 inch plate as a backing. Drilled thru the original leg stubs and then through the wimpy sheet metal bed. (I am amazed at how thin that sheet metal is. Took me longer to drill through the seat frame) Looks sweet. Now all I need is a good paint job and some decent tires and I'll be ready to rock. Kinda considering keeping the thing for the street. Not sure right now. Last pic is the Passenger side. Pic is bad quality but the rear wheel is how I want the rest of the wheels to look like Bosco
  23. The things that I am getting together are 1) Air compressor so I can air down tires 2) Cable come-along 3) A high lift jack (needed if you have a raised rig and can be used as a come-along) 4) Gloves 5) Tow strap 6) Army Entrenching tool. 7) Mats/carpets for traction. Some things on my wish list are winch and a pull-pal http://www.pullpal.com/ L8tr BW
  24. Yep same as Pismo Beach. Plan to go there and drive around for a little bit. Some wheeling and some scoob nuts. This is her first time wheeling. Hope to make it fun. Then my roommate in the BRAT is going to fake a breakdown and he and my other bud will sit there and try to fix it. They will suggest that I head out and keep driving. As we drive away, they will start setting up a tent and decorate it. When they are done they will radio me and tell me that they have it fixed and we are ready to go. Head back and there will be this tent. Inside the tent will be a table and lights (maybe candles if not too much of a fire hazard.) Will tell her how great she is etc etc etc... and then BAM.... Hope to catch this on video so I can send it back to her parents in Tennesse and my parents in Virginia. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am getting engaged
