looking at car that won't start
roxtar replied to the goat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
will it turn over and just not catch or is it not even turning over? no turn over could just simply be a dead battery... they die when parked too long. could also be ignition switch or starter no catch gets more complicated to diagnose. the engine needs 3 things to start. 1.) spark 2.) fuel/air 3.) compression no spark could be bad plugs/wires, bad cap/rotor, bad coil, disconnected wires to ignition components fuel related could be bad pump, clogged filter, clogged lines, leaking lines, or just a tank full of stale gas compression can be lost through shot piston rings, blown head gasket, cracked head/block and any number of other things hope all this helps -
yeah, but by that logic, an ea81 can still spontaneously explode. i always thought the main reason for the 81's in aircraft was that they are light, well balanced and fairly fuel efficient
-
i thought the ej22 was much better on belts than the ea82
-
i'd go alloy since i think they're lighter without losing strength. not real sure about that as far as size... you might want to look into the price differences for tires to fit these wheels. one size might cost less than another also, performance tires might be cheaper/better for one size

87 GL wagon Heater Fan Problems?
roxtar replied to jwikan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
welcome to the board don't know all that much about the heating/ac systems... but if the GL is the same as the Loyale (and i think it is) then the blower and relays and all that stuff should be passenger side, kinda under the glove box. as far as the controls and switches go, you need to pry off the fan speed selector knob and the defrost button (both right hand side of instrument panel) in order to get to the screws you need to get to the switches. -
i don't speak freaky-deaky greek.. ok puzzled boy? /dr evil but seriously, the max tow capacity i think should be on the vehicle info plate on the driver side door.

yeah, the 4WD weighs a couple hundred pounds more. y'know, drive shaft, transfer case, etc. takes a bite out of the mileage. plus i think the tranny is geared a little lower. even when i'm in FWD 65 MPH is just over 3k rpms.

since its a 3sp and mostly highway, i'm guessing you hover around 4 grand on the tach at cruise speeds (well, LEGAL cruise speeds at least). in that case, low/mid 20s is not too bad. some things you could do to improve your mileage would be getting a new O2 sensor in addition to your basic tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor). also, sometimes your mileage will suffer if you're using gas with too high an octane rating. always use the lowest octane your car can take without detonation. if you carry a lot of extra crap in your car with you, the extra weight could also be hurting your mileage. Might also check to see if the return lines for your fuel injection system are good and clear. if they're clogged, you might be squirting too much fuel into the cylinders since the pressure will be higher than expected. <-- just a wild assed guess

forgot to ask... how do you dive it? are you the kind of person who likes to hear squealing tires at every take off or do you think that the guy honking his horn behind you is thanking you for being so cautious as you try to avoid killing the flies in front of you? is this city or highway? wide open traffic or stop and go?

5sp wagon, around 26-30 mpg depending on whether i drive like a grandma or a 16 y/o speed freak. keep in mind, it also runs like crap. those 3sp ATs are pretty much a hated thing here by the way

tell me about it. thought mine was dead, but she came roaring back to life after a couple days of sitting parked. i'm still shopping for a new car, but i'm hoping to get scooby to 300k before i have to put her out to pasture

low oil pressure = new gaskets?
roxtar replied to LUVMYBRAT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thats where my oil pressure ALWAYS is. I chalk it up to the engine having taken the car to the moon and back like 28 times. gets better when I put some crazy thick oil (15-20w 40-50). Usually run 10w 30 most of the time though actually, the moon is like 225-250k miles from earth, so i'd be on my way back currently. -
Can you replace an ea81 with an ea82
roxtar replied to pwoens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i was kidding man, i know the 81-82 swap is fairly easy as far as engine swaps go, my point was that you can make just about anything work. -
how hard you driving it? what kind of weekly mileage? does it smoke a lot on the start and then clear up?

roxtar replied to pwoens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
can you replace the ea81 with the engine from a ferarri enzo? yes, but it will be a pain in the rump roast. basically, anything is possible if you have the money/time/imagination/know-how -
Scooby Roo finally kicked the bucket
roxtar replied to roxtar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
back from the dead? it started last night and i was able to drive it home.... maybe little scooby was just angry at me for all the miles i put on the clock last weekend. -
loyale revs high is this normal
roxtar replied to djcracker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
welcome to the notorious auto tranny on ea82 subbies. woulda been better off with a 5sp. 60 mph on my loyale (god rest his soul) was right around 3 grand in 5th and 4 grand was up around 80 or so -

roxtar replied to roxtar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
maybe if i'd spent more intially i'd be more willing. i paid $200 clutch+install $500 tune-ups/oil changes $100 tires $150 suspension/body repair $500 new wheel $40 air fresheners etc to get rid of the unholy funk it came with $25 + many hours new belts $15 so i've already put more than 1300 bucks in a $200 purchase. adding another grand to that is just................... -

going to go visit my buddy's dad at the chevy dealership after work (shudders) 0% for 72 months on all new 2004s. then i may go look at a toyota. any of you area people know where the closest subbie dealer is? -
one of the most recent things scooby roo did was spit all the grease from the inner cv boot all over the cat (amongst other things). no fire

yeah, tools and parts are not the problem, time and ability are. i don't have time to be spending every evening trying to fix this thing, going from one known problem to the next. i already have the O2 sensor and the water pump but lack some of the tools to replace them. I almost tackled the water pump a couple weeks ago but got snagged when i couldn't get the crank pulley off. the O2 sensor is original and has now been made even harder to get out by the layer of CV joint grease that spewed out of the boot onto the cat effectively glueing it in place. and those are only the problems i know about. i also have a substantial rumble in the front suspension that i can't track down. my engine problem might be solved by the O2 sensor, but there could be a lot more wrong with it. In the last 2 months i've already replaced the left front suspension/axle as well as several ignition components. i also know that i have a slightly stripped thread in one of my spark plug holes which i cannot fix myself. so basically, i'm not up to the hassle of fixing all this sh__, and i'm not willing to dump a grand on a car with that many miles. -
well, now in addition to all the other problems, i have a dead fuel pump so here is the tally fuel pump $200 CV boot $250 at a shop O2 sensor $100 at a shop water pump $200 or so at a shop state inspection $15 brake pads/rotors $200+ so thats almost a grand to be put into a car with 275k miles. I have reached the "screw this" point
-
you think maybe they did that on purpose? so that the smoke/stench will grab your full attention?

yick, considering how bad ordinary, unburning gear oil smells, i can only imagine the hellish, nausiating funk of burning gear oil. good luck at the boneyard
