  1. Ya there is another guy here in Orem and someone a bit up north too. Ball park range of how much that spark plug tap would run? Better to rent one?-(checker) Oh and i believe one of the plugs had a helicoil come out with it. Thats what confused me so bad
  2. So i know that the rules differ from state to state, but i was failed on the safety test for not having my sway bar installed. They marked it as missing suspension on the report. I removed it because i may have bent it when i replaced a CV axle on my wheeler Loyale and decided it wasn't necessary for this car. It still doesn't have any body roll around corners! Super stiff suspension or something. Anyways anyone know if the sway bar is Required to pass? Thanks Also i went to replace the spark plugs, and to my super dismay one plug pulled the threads out with it?! And one other was stripped. I only managed to put in one new plug and was to scarred to continue. It runs now but is there a fix for this? Drill out and re tap? Throw some in with JB weld and call it good? haha Thanks for any help.
  3. Cool good to know. are the H6 motors pretty reliable then? Same with the Turbo systems? I have shyed away from turbo motors because i figure they are driven a bit harder and will have probably a good amount of maintenance to do in the future as well. Any thoughts?
  4. So in my small time becoming acquainted with Subaru, i have noticed that there is a somewhat UN-reliable side to some motors. I was wondering if you could all help me pin point which motors are the worst to avoid and if looking for a new Subaru in the 2002-2006 range what is the best option. My friends mothers outback just had the infamous HG failure and 3000 motor replacement run around. I hear the 2.2L is amazing and people are even swapping them into their newer outbacks. But is there a motor that is a 2.5 that is reliable with out these HG issues? Maybe there is a year range or difference between like the outbacks 2.5 and and imprezas' 2.5? Thank you for any pushes in the right direction.
  5. Ya i only had to bend a couple parts on the car. But im happy to have it done. Hey gwilson! Get that motor out of the coupe! haha i saw the seatbelt harness and the motor all cockeye and had to laugh. Let me know if you need help pulling it or something.
  6. OK hopefully those pics uploaded alright. Just thought i would post up for fun so others can see my work in progress! Recently bought this 90 loyale for 300 bucks. Obviously super rusty and that's just how they are around Utah. But the motor runs nicely with No TOD and working AC so to me it was worth it. I have had loyales before but never really got into working on them myself but this one is my cheap reliable project. So the list of things that had to be replaced. Today i replaced the front brakes ($20 each rotor and all pads) A CV axle, and the passenger mirror. I haven't ever done a CV axle before but after cruising the fix it manual on here and various write ups i got the confidence to go do it myself. Not to mention i wont pay someone half the price of the car to just put in a new axle. So i found a good condition axle in the local Pick n pull and got it for about 30 bucks. It was super hot and gave me a huge sense of accomplishment pulling it myself in about half an hour to an hour. It took a lot of pounding and persuading but it got it out! I took the route of un-doing the sway bar and control arm. And that worked out quite nicely. Oh i did get stung by a wasp when i put my tool box on top of another Subaru and it hurt like crap! It took me about an hour once i got to my shop to put the rotor on and axel back in my Subaru so a bit quicker around the second time. Luckily the rotors came right off the axle that helped. Sorry about rambling. It just feels so good to do something on my own and not pay tons for someone else to have my life experiences right!? Anyways here's some pics, i will be replacing the hood, fenders and rear hatch due to severe rust. I did super quick rust control with a grinder, then quick primer job. I will do more later when i get the other body parts and then a fresh paint job! There is a lot of rust to holes in the rear lower overhang of the wagon, has anyone cut those whole sections out? Anyone have pics of the end result? I dont mind cutting out the fenders a bit because i have plans for wheeling it a bit in the hills. So better departure angles are all good in my book. Plans are a 2 inch lift and a 5spd DR swap. oh hey another question, There is a coupe at the JY with a DR and i believe its a 89. Will it work with my gear ratios? 3.9 i believe? Straight up bolt in swap i hope. Anyways thanks for reading about my car and leave any feed back or suggestions or answers! Brian
  7. ok i will try it tomorrow thanks for the help!
  8. Hoses are good, not sure on the water pump condition, I just bought the car for 300 bucks so i may just try a used one for now. Are there any indicators that will help me know for sure if its a clogged radiator? Thanks for your help!
  9. The cap looks brand new, if my radiator were clogged, is there a way to clean it out or just junk yard a used one? Same scenario if the cooling fins are worn out? I can hear the cooling fans revving up while im driving so unless there is play in the shafts i would say they are doing their job.
  10. Im not the best mechanic out there and i have run into a problem. My new Loyale overheats pretty much once every time i drive it. Its about 95 every day here and i try to not rally drive it knowing that just causes heat. Here is what i have done to chase down the problem. Cooling system flush. I also left it running on an incline to get rid of bubbles and topped it off. Still having issues. So today i replaced the thermostat with just a standard Autozone part. Same issue happening. Im stumped at this point. Remember im a work on it in your driveway mechanic. Anything else i should try before i take it to a mechanic? Thanks
  11. Alright just one more problem i still need help with, the fuel gauge!? It wont move at all regardless of gas level. Is there a fuse?
  12. sweet thanks tom. I will do the blinker test in the morning.
  13. So i just picked up my 90 loyale and have 2 questions. There were 5 questions but the repair manual on here solved a lot of them. SO number one! There is a loud sound coming from the back of the car. It sounds electronic. I found out the previous owner has replaces the fuel pump a couple time and this is sounding like just a really loud aftermarket pump. Has anyone else experienced this sound? Number 2, the gas gauge dosent work. Where do i start to fix this? Possible fuse? This was a good find in my opinion! Only 150K on original motor with no TOD! Working AC and clean inside. Outside is another story. Going to have to get cray with a hacksaw. What is the best way to cut out fenders? Hacksaw, grinder? Thanks for your help and time. Brian Oh and i have seen people remove doors on their Subarus for that off road look, can the body handle this without weakening the uni-body?
  14. Oh perfect dude! oh and there is like 5 old ea82 wagons at the pick n pull down on geneva. I am going to check out this loyale up in heber tomorrow for 300 bucks that needs a cv axel and battery. I will let ya know if im a proud old subaru owner!
  15. I like the EA82 wagons. I had one i drove 200 miles to college and back with over 200k on the Odo and the TOD from college every weekend and it was a champ! I could buy a new car but its kinda a nostalgic thing to have another old Subaru. And i tend to lean towards wagons. But this xt6 came up and i just had to ask if it was a good choice. After perusing the forum here for years im itching to get a good wagon and do a 2 inch lift. So i think i will go that way. Hey Gwilson, do you work at the Subaru dealership in American Fork? So update, i will probably get a EA82 and do a 5spd DR conversion and 2inch lift. Thanks for all the input!
  16. ooh ya im hoping it wouldnt be too hard to up keep. Like my loyale was. So maybe i will search for another Loyale or older wagon. Thanks for the input! Anyone else in utah that wants this one go get her!
  17. Sorry i know i post a lot of these but there is always some downfall about the car so i havent bought one yet. This XT6 is in fair shape for living here in Utah. Cars get pretty rusty here. Its olny rusted out on the front fenders right in front of the pass and driver's doors. The only downfalls to the car the owner will admitt up to is the noisy lifters and bad muffler. I will go drive it in the next couple days and have more info on the car. Here is a link to the car. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=443&sid=733005&tab=images/view&ad=1420248 Is the noisy lifter going to be a big mechanical issue? Any options like replacing the lifters and oil pump to solve it? Anyways looks pretty decent, just begging for some WRX wheels and love! Give me some info or input please! Thanks
  18. Cool thanks for the input. There is a 92 ea82 loyale sedan that would work out good for the swap. Unless i dont know about the shorter wheel base being an issue? I guess you just shorten the drive shaft right? Thanks again for the help!
  19. I would love a hatch, but old Subaru's are very sparse here. so no input on whether i should buy new vs old? If i were to lift one, it would only be 2 inches.
  20. It would be my dd on pugs with slightly oversized tires. There is an option of buying a newer Loyale for the same price range, and i have debated doing a Dr swap. Which would be better? I checked for a weber conversion on ebay for this motor (the 85) and it would be 300 for a kit at least. So maybe going newer and converting the tranny would be the better bet? And there is always the possibility of wanting to lift it in the future so maybe i should shy away from this GL. Opinions?
  21. So there is a wagon for sale locally, but i wont find out details on the motor for a day or so. Just hoping someone could help me out sooner. Its an 85 Gl wagon. Im wondering if it should have the 1.6 or 1.8 motor stock? And was there any EFI kits around or do they run the craptachi carbs? Also were 5 speeds available this year? I swear i searched but just got run in circles. Thanks for any help!
  22. So im about to get a 92 loyale due to the lack of even older subys in my area. I would like the DR option and i searched a bit and just want to make sure my ideas are correct. I believe if i wanted i could switch in a tranny/ diff combo from an older suby with the DR as long as they both match gear ratios? Its a semi bolt and play conversion is what i hear. Also that there is a bit of wiring to the tranny that has to be spliced? If im on the right track let me know. And if i switch the tranny and diff, would i need to switch CV axles also? Different lengths? Also there is an opportunity to buy a GL-10 turbo wagon 88. Seems like members lately have cursed any old turbo suby. Should i avoid it also? Any info or input much appreciated!
  23. Hey ya its moved i saw him driving down I 15 doing about 90. I was way impressed. There are turbo emblems on it so looks like he isn't kidding.
  24. OK so i talked to the dealership more about the 98 OB limited. I brought up my concern with the HG issues and he said if and or when the HG goes out, i will only be charged his price. Essentially tops 600 bucks out the door for the mechanics hours, gaskets, and machine work. This helped me feel more comfortable with the car. I am possibly going to buy the OB tomorrow if everything goes good with selling my current daily driver tomorrow. I don't know, am i making just an awful decision? It seems that every Subaru has its high points and lows. I am starting to get burned out on finding a Subaru that is perfect for me when the ones in my range are reportedly a bad setup. And no one has the old school EA s in good enough shape around here to use as a Daily Driver. Sorry for rambling. Any advice like always is greatly appreciated.
