Replacing the heads
hardtail_pride replied to hardtail_pride's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok here is the thing i have been dancing around a bit. One of the plugs was so seized to the threads in the head, that what looks like a heli coil came out with the plug itself and left no threads in the head. So its not just the normal sized striped hole, its even bigger than normal striped hole if you know what i mean. Is there an even bigger tap and coil you can use for this or am i in a real predicament? -
Replacing the heads
hardtail_pride replied to hardtail_pride's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was just considering my options. I didnt know if the thread inserts would be a weak link in the motor for the future. But sounds like they are stronger so i will try that route first. I did try chasing the threads but they were gone. on a couple holes. Thanks for the detailed reply! -
Update, Read my last post on the page for details. Thanks! Dang i feel like i post here a lot but i have learned tons so here's the next question. Still have stripped spark plug holes on my 90 Loyale EA82, been trying to squeeze money lately by riding the motorcycle for the last 2 months. I have heard about the heila coil fix, and im not completely sold on it and am wondering the level of difficulty of just replacing the heads themselves with some down at the pick n pull? Is there different heads within the EA82 model years? Would possible an EA81 head fit? Im assuming with my limited knowledge you just drain motor and radiator, unbolt the heads and bolt up the new ones? is there tuning for the lifters involved? Am i totally on the wrong path here? Thanks

I was more curious than anything just wanted to see if they were transferable. A guy is coming to tap and helicoil my spark plug holes that are messed up and was trying to see what my last resort would be.

Wow im really excited now. This is an at home lift kit i feel comfortable making! No welding required! Im a little fuzzy on the drilling the offset right. Anynoe care to explain a bit?
-
I would like to make my own 2" lift, after seeing pics like these makes me wonder what is so hard about it? I know camber comes into question, but all the blocks on the front strut look like the same size square piping. And of course the lengthening of the steering shaft and alignment need to be done too. Am i missing something? I know i snaked these pics, if the original pic owner doesn't want them on my post let me know.

I stayed up late researching rust repaair using bondo and fiberglass and am really stoked now to try it out myself! It looks like it would be cheaper to to than the foam kit anyways so i will give it a try. Hey Caramanos (face hands? haha in spanish anyways) is it safe and or will it be structurally sound to use the aluminum tape for a base layer? Thanks! -

I would do fiberglass but i have no experience there and dont know if it would cover that big of a hole. Would it? i looked into the fiberglass repair a bit and wonder if it would contour around a small ledge to hold the whole patch in place, because i havealready messed up and not left enough surface area for it to bond to. -

Ya for sure. This is going to be the ghetto wagon. Trying to have a budget functional toy and driver to get me to the slopes! Anyone know if it will pass safety with gaping holes like that? I can imagine getting failed cause exhaust could enter in the cabin that way, but its summer so all windows are down. -

Thats what im thinking. My awesome fabricating skills made a really shoddy bent up steel panel to cover it. But that had a lot of gaps due to rust taking the inside of the wheel well also. Once i cut away and it all just fell apart, i had to ditch that method. Maybe rivet the top to the existing body then throw foam inside to hold it all together? I'm about ready to go suby hunting again, then i remember this is just the "beater with a heater, and AC!" for now. -

Well I'm all about the bend and rivet idea, but here is a pic to show my predicament. There is that much rust and i started cutting away and now there really is nothing to rivet to. On the lower area anyways. I was thinking of filling all of that with foam. I don't know. Any suggestions a basic DIY kid could do? Sorry about the bad pic quality. I hope this doesn't come down to duct taping over the hole and painting it hahaha -
SO i have been looking for an affordable rust repair for MY budget, and i know this isn't the most quality repair, but it fits my needs and doesn't have to look that good in the end. Just curious if any one else has tried it. I read about using a Boat Foam spray to fill in rust holes, then after its hardened use bondo over the top of that to have a harder surface. My whole rear quarter panels are pretty much gone, so i was thinking of filling them full of foam, then bondo etc. I'm not worried about aesthetics, more about the weather entering into my car and Wasps building nests. I know its more of a rinky dinky fix but would it work and hold up for say 2 years? Thanks

'85 Brat EJ22 swap (Pics included)
hardtail_pride replied to gwilson87's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Hey just came across your swap! Holy cow thats a good looking Brat! Have you seen the farmers brats across the freeway? I want one but they are all rusted out like my wagon is right now. Good luck on the swap, if you need an extra hand im free in the afternoons to help turn wrenches! Brian -
Even better, does anyone have a blueprint or designs they would like to share of a 2-3 inch home made lift kit?

AC refrigerant.

I heard propane is a very sketchy substance to use, because if it leaks into your interior and there is a spark BOOM! hehe -
Radiator verification- and tranny
hardtail_pride replied to hardtail_pride's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So when you say mounting points for linkage, im a bit confused. Could you explain? Thanks -
So there is an 87 GL sedan carb'd locally being parted out, and i need a radiator for my 90 Loyale wagon. I checked Auto zone website and it says they are the same radiator between those years. Just wanted someone to confirm this if possible. Thanks! Oh and just for fun, will his 5spd DR tranny bolt in?

Its the size you see for all the new versions at auto zone for just recharge. Nothing more than just a top off. Ya zstalker that would be sweet. I gotta stop by sometime. Its just busy with work and mountain biking and tinkerin with my subaru. One day i will though -
So if i understand right, your making affordable lifts? I hope so, any chance you'd make a 2" lift for a 90 loyale wagon? With all the bolts and pieces straight "Bolt in" system with lengthened steering shaft? Thanks
-
So i searched a bit and just had a question. My 90 loyale surprisingly has working ac, but could possible use a recharge. I know i need R12 and have to more or less be a professional to do this process. I found someone with an old can of R12 for 25 bucks, just wondering if its worth picking up and keeping for when my car needs the flush done? And Is it best to just take to a professional than try and do it myself? Thanks

Safety Brain Tickler'-Utah
hardtail_pride replied to hardtail_pride's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No i didnt mean i would bring it by for a free guaranteed pass inspection! I figured instead of just failing me and not givin me any options you would actually help me out and show me the steps needed to pass. Well plans may change on this one, i started some rust removal and didnt realize just how rusted out this loyale is. Im going to think about wether or not to keep this one for a couple days then probably come in and get the process rolling again on inspections. Thanks!
