  1. Might not be fun but go thorugh the car and replace any bad bushings it's cheap and it makes the car a better driver Make a skid plate... looks easy and it's on my to do list
  2. I would go with the stick, more get up and go (and that engine is going to need all that it can get), I wouldn't recommend a turbo unless it was maintained to OEM specs. I noticed every other car on craigs list says it was JUST rebuilt.... yea that's why they are selling it after just rebuilding it. Ask for receipts for the seals, rings, belts, etc. If they cant produce the documentation I would not consider it rebuilt and negotiate accordingly. One a lighter note, subies are great snow cars. I had my loyale out last year when we had the "day after tomorrow" style snow storm, no one else was out on the road, good times!
  3. Well that was easy! I picked up a new handle from Subaru (about 30bucks) it took me less then 10 minutes to install. I just pulled (literaly) the interior panel off, removed two nuts holding the handle on, removed the broken platic handle from the metal rod (make sure you remember which side the metal rod was on!), installed the new handle, pressed the metal rod into the plastic retainer on the plastic arm of the handle, reinstalled the interior panel. bada bing! Only thing I would add is that YOU ARE GOING TO BREAK a few of those dried up little clips that hold the interior panel on(unless someone has been rubbing them with a silicon cloth or glycerol or something lol) so plan on a trip to the autoparts store!
  4. As far as the tranny goes we were just discussing what tranny is best with a EJ22 swap, if you do this make sure you replace the seals, belts and a water pump & thermostat while the engine is out. CLICK http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=107040 I ended up going with a 5speed pushbutton for my N/A EJ22 swap, the transmission itself looks to be stronger then the dual range (due to the 1 piece input shaft) and the "no look" engagement closed the deal for me. The point for the dual range 5spd was if you are going to be running large tires. Keep in mind that with that EJ22 your car is going to have about a 16.7 power to weight ratio (which is better then the new non-si civics, camry and even a C230 Merc Kompressor) so chances are you are not going to need the low range unless you doing something that is going to require big azz tires anyway.
  5. THANKS, looks like I'm going to stick with my pushbutton 5spd. I'll be sure to examine the engagement system if I find myself under the car for oil changes and whatnot.
  6. So the major factor I am facing with the push button is a possible contact failure or vac leak. Are there any strength differences between the two? For the type of off-road operations the loyale sees I dont think I am going to need a lower set of gears in combination with the 30 something percent increase in HP and TQ that I will experience with the EJ. I think I can handle the contacts and vac leak, as (correct me if I am wrong here) those issues would be picked up with standard maintenance. The big issue for me is when I am driving the loyale in a ... spirited manner is not damaging the tranny with the power I will see with the EJ22.
  7. So the only advantage is the gearing? Which one has a better final gear ratio for highway use?
  8. If it doesn't work on ANY speed it's probably the motor. Turn the car on, put the selector to max (I think it is "4" or something) and check for 12vdc at the blower (it's to the left pax side).
  9. Currently I have a 89' Loyale, it has the push button 4wd 5speed. I was asked if I was going to keep the push button or swap over to a dual range with my EJ swap. Currently I really like the push button (on-road and off) as it has worked great for the mud/trails as well as the road. Aside from the gear ratios is there a strength difference or other reason I should steer away from my push button?
  10. Thanks Bill Got it! One last question, would you happen to remember the way the clips want to release on the hatch (lift up, down, side, etc.)?
  11. I figured I would have to remove the plastic panel, however what am I going to see when I get it open, is this something I am going to need more then just a replacement handle for? Sorry for being difficult, I just would like to hear from people that have done this before I rip into the rear hatch. Thanks
  12. Well I got the swap all ready, just need to pick up the engine/exhaust/radator/etc , problem is my hatch doesn't open.... Going to pick up a new plastic handle for Subaru tomorrow, can someone give me a play by play on how to replace this plastic handle?? THANKS, S
  13. My speedo on my 90' Loyale is sticking. I will take her up to about 65mph, slow down to about 45 at it will still read 65, then swoop down to 45. Are these things electronic or mechanical, I dont hear any noise or binding. Thoughts? Thanks, S
  14. So what did you do with the wiring? What would have you changed with the wiring?
  15. So how do you guys put lightbars on the top of your loyales? What do you use for the bar, how are you running the wires in (weather-proof?)??? Thanks btw, I'm running 3 or 4 7" HIDs, still havent decided on if I want to pony up for four or run three (as if I only put two up top the car would look like a d@mn mouse). -S
  16. I'm not a dune guy, but I did live in the desert for a while. My thoughts would be that a dual range isnt going to help that much, the big factor is going to be getting a big enough footprint / tread to not sink and to keep your speed up.
  17. I am debating swapping a EJ22 into my stick 4wd loyale. More then the actual work of the swap... how about the end result. How does the EJ powered loyale compare to say.. a EJ powered legacy (4dr or wagon). on road w/ stock/stock (but with EJ engine)? off road? gas mileage? maintenance?
  18. This is why I have a 20lb DryChem Fire Extinguisher behind the pass seat. ...WOW
  19. I recently installed a new (or rather re-manf) alternator and with these lights only pulling 35watts each I dont think it should be too much of a electrical issue. Well I guess if no one on here can find a problem, I'll bolt these up tomorrow!
  20. Well I am finally getting around to mounting these d@mn 7" HIDs I bought a long time ago for my loyale. I plan on mounting them on the top of the bumper like in these pics. How adversely will these effect my engine temp? Thanks guys, S
  21. Well it didnt make that sound before and I didnt notice any excessive free play during taking the wheel on and off during the brake upgrade. hmmm?
  22. Ok, so I put new calipers on the car and that did that, only thing was some grinding (as the pads get to know the rotors), which has all but gone away... HOWEVER I still get the grinding when I turn left?? any ideas? Does that shound like anything, or will it burn off? (the car didnt do that before the install). -S
