1996 outback wagon begging for advice ;)
rweddy replied to pwoens's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI agree as long as you know what you are getting into with the 2.5 I do not think they are that bad. They have great power and if you build into the price a HG replacment or if you are handy and can put in a new ccr motor the do it!!You will love the 1st gen outbacks. I have owned a LOT of subarus and I think the outbacks are the best of any I have owned. If the 96 in colorado is something you are interested in let me know and I will see if I can go take a look for you.

OK, time to bump up my knowlege of my Subaru (Long)
rweddy replied to Gnuman's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere are double port 90-96 and single port 97+. Great motors both. I would put in 75W90 in the tranny. I run Redline 75W90NS, it is a special synthetic for manual gear boxes. Do not run conventional synthetic in the tranny. Run either normal gear lube or synthetic made for trannys not axles. The Redline would also cure you cold shifting issues.

1996 outback wagon begging for advice ;)
rweddy replied to pwoens's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat is kind of high price for a car with that high of mileage. I got my 96 3 months ago with 76k 5 spd 2.2 cold weather package for $6000.00 from a dealer. Also remember that this car 2.5 so build into the cost the $1200 for the HG failure that may or may not happen. Here is a car that is for sale in Denver, could offer him 5k pay the 500 for shipping and be good to go with a 2.2 no less. http://denver.craigslist.org/car/46781712.html http://www.1newgroove.com/car/

Blown head gasket vs. cracked block
rweddy replied to Michaelcycle's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXStop going to the dealership! They are not good at diagnosing issues; they are paid to get parts on off vehicles. And most of the time what you tell the service writer never gets to the tec. Find a local independent Subaru shop, fix the HG or if you have not overheated it too many times or if you have get an engine from CCR.

Transmission fluid location
rweddy replied to webfiend's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYep that is where you add it. Do not take it to a shop, this is easy to do yourself. The drain plug is directly under the tranny, unscrew it and then refil. Just topping it off will not help too much. It needs to be changed if it has been in there for that long, before you really get damage.

Transmission fluid location
rweddy replied to webfiend's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHas it ever been changed? If not 150k is a lot of miles wo change. You also might be missing the dip stick and that could have allowed dirt, dust into the fluid. Do you see the tube on the left hand, passenger side of the transmission?

Transmission fluid location
rweddy replied to webfiend's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe dipstick is on the left handside of the motor, if you are looking at the engine from the front. Near the back. Probably not low, needs changed. How many miles? Put in some Redline 75W90NS and you will be good to go!

Ack...I need a help fixing..a cup holder :)
rweddy replied to lepetitprince's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXTry this, push on the holder itself, try to push it in a little bit. Many times drinks, pop, coffee, etc get spilled in there. Mine was like this so I had to push it in a few times and then push the release while it was on its way back out.

Roofracks
rweddy replied to Bkillazrallying's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThen I would go with a Thule set up. I used to sell used racks on ebay, and all the Thule racks I would pick up even after 20 years were in great shape. Yakima rust after just a few years. Look on ebay for a rack and basket or find a local used rack place where you live.

rweddy replied to rweddy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe Nokian WR is a all-weather tire so you do not need 2 sets, only downside is it only a 50k tire.

Colorado All Season Tire recommendation
Ok I am getting new tires for my OBW. Here is my dilemma, I drive a lot, 500miles a week, in Colorado weather. Which means snow, rain, dry, etc. I have been looking at several tires. Arizonian silver edition Michelin HydroEdge Goodyear Assurance TripleTred Nokian WR I love the Nokian but the are expensive and only have a 50,000 mile warranty. Which would last me just 1 ½ years with my driving. The shop recommended the Arizonian silver (store brand goodyear tire) said they have sold it as snow tire one year when the ran out of snow tires. Does anyone in Colorado have any experience with these? Or have recommendation? It is going to snow here soon and I need tires!

2005 crash test praise.
The 2005 Subaru Outback, which NHTSA classifies as an SUV, was the only vehicle that earned five stars on all front and side-impact tests. The Outback was tested with its side air bags since they are standard. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=509&e=4&u=/ap/crash_tests
