  1. The Brat is for rallyx, so I'll never have enough traction:) Traction on the street will not be a problem after the next transmission goes in, I hope. I'm working on dropping/stiffening the front and stiffening the rear as well. I'll elaborate once I have something that works. If I posted every retarded, ill-planned, poorly researched or physically impossible idea I had, this place would be a disaster area. Jacob
  2. Yeah, I thought you were referring to me as the guy that did the Frankenmotor, since I started the thread on it. I was wondering if you'd ask this:) The EJ series is the newer stuff, including Legacies and WRXs and such. EA81s include Brats and hatches, among others. XT6s are oddballs, but they're included in the EA82 series, which came after EA81s. There's a lot of confusion when you start learning because of overlaps, especially if you look globally. There are a few years where all three series were sold. In the US, there are some years where 2 series were sold in the same year. The short answer is that the hatch is really similar to a gen 2 Brat or any other EA81-series car, especially up front. For specifics, just search. For example, hatches and Brats use the same doors, but different door glass. Jacob
  3. Oh yeah, and as far as an "easier way" for the front suspension, you should look into the 5-lug swap. It lets you run EJ goodies up front. I'm not sure if it's easier or not. Jacob
  4. Ok, given that answer, I recommend you look into what the aviation people are doing with our motors. They document how far they've taken these engines much more than people here do. I'd guess that most of the people here who have done that research before have opted for an EJ swap. If you're shooting for 200hp out of an EA81 hatch, there is no known bolt-on suspension that would be adequate for that power. The people who did these things won't bite if you ask them questions. I responded in this thread because I saw I was mentioned as "the guy". I thought it was a little odd given the atmosphere of this forum. The VW strut cartridge has been done once, to my knowledge. I suspect the spliced XT6 axles are because he's using an EJ transmission. There are different spline counts, lengths, etc. between the different generations. Depending on the route you take, you may or may not have to deal with that. The comment on the other forum is almost certainly directed at EJ-era stuff. Subaru, to my knowledge, is not going back to the suspension they were using in the '70s and '80s. Jacob
  5. I think you'll be hard-pressed to get the answers you want here with the questions you're asking. This forum is full of people who understand the trade-offs between time, money and performance. Ask the right questions, though, and the help flows like wine:banana: For example, yes you can put a WRX engine in there. With all of the time and money you put into it, you could have just worked nights at Denny's and saved enough to buy a WRX. That includes getting the brakes, suspension and transmission up to that level as well. Another example: "what is the motor thats in it good for, hp wise? any chance of building it up to my hp expectations?" It's good for more than you can handle, and the chances are good to build it to your horsepower expectations. Expect it to last for about 10 seconds or expect to pay a lot of money and spend a lot of time. Probably way more than an EJ swap. I'll ask you the same things I ask everyone: What do you plan to do with the car, and how much money can you spend? If you give us those constraints (along with your fabrication skills/resources, which I can guarantee are better than mine:grin:), we'll be better equipped to give you more meaningful answers. Jacob

  7. How much time do you have before the next race? Also, the NA power white paper isn't the bible of Subaru NA performance. It doesn't include everything, and some of the stuff in there is widely regarded as a waste of space. It helped me put things into perspective, though. It was about the same money for cams as it was for, say, a lightweight pulley and grounding kit. I opted for cams based partly on the gains mentioned in that thread. Jacob

  11. I respectfully disagree. If NASCAR never came to be, I think that there is enough interest in racing that another form (maybe rally) would be just as big and provide the same benefits (if any) that NASCAR does now. I learned how to turn left in driver's ed, so I'm not sure what NASCAR has taught us that any other motorsport couldn't teach us if it were as popular. Surely something like the HANS device would still have become common if F1, for example, were big and NASCAR never came to its current form. Since we're both American, we're both allowed to disagree with each other and vote with our dollars. I try my damnedest to not purchase anything that sponsors NASCAR. It pains me to buy Mobile1, but then, one time I went back into the store to exchange some garbage bags I bought that had the logo on them. I don't drink $hitty beer, so that's never been a problem:) Agreed, and thanks for expressing some of my concerns better than I could:) I think it's a good first step for them to invite a looooooooong-time rally supporter like edrach out to view the facility.   12. Nice. When it came to the port/polish/valves choice, I decided it was the point where the HP/$ ratio wasn't worth it for me. Adding the 2.5 block and cams were easy choices for the money, though. I still need to come over and look at your setup. I'm trying to get the car ready for Sunday's rallyx, though. The fixes are going about 3 times slower than I expect them to. Jacob
  13. Hmm, I thought you'd dive right into a turbo project:-) I don't buy the fancy rotors thing. I do have fancy pads, though, and the master cylinder is a new reman. I thought my setup would be about right, but something isn't working. How do you check the line pressure? Jacob

  16. I go through Rainier pretty often. I was hoping to take it through there next weekend, but the part of me that thinks things through is telling me to figure out the transmission/brakes/suspension first. Right now I'm toying with the idea of some kind of air shocks for the rear. The RX springs (if that's what they were) I got for the front were pretty disappointing. I've bled the brakes about 20 times on each corner with minimal improvement. I think I'd be happy with the brakes if they worked properly. I have a plan for the transmission, but it'll be a pain. Again, it looks just like any other EJ-swapped Brat until you look very closely. Jacob

  18. I'll throw him a bone. The crank pulleys for modern Subarus are almost entirely interchangeable. I'm sure STI/SPT/Prodrive would have those. You can also get a fancy chrome one from Perrin or Agency Power for around $100. Make sure you search on here or NASIOC to make sure it's right for you. EVERY mod has its tradeoffs. Jacob
  19. I'm happy to see anything that makes rally bigger (or makes NASCAR smaller) in the US . I'm still skeptical of this new school, though. I don't see how they can hand over high-power rally cars to beginners and have them run through a few stages. Rally America doesn't allow that, and I assume it's for a good reason. I'm worried that the school will end up charging a bunch of money for people to do donuts in the mud somewhere, which makes my favorite sport more like NASCAR. I certainly hope I'm wrong, though.   21. I'll look into that, but like I said, I want to focus on transmission/brakes/suspension before I worry about what people think of my idle. Unless it's a g-g-g-g-ghost:eek: I hope the video helped give you a good idea of what it is. It doesn't affect daily driving in the least. I've commuted for about 500 miles with it so far with lots of stop-and-go traffic, and it hasn't bothered me at all. Jacob
  22. Don't you think it's odd that the computer can't figure out how to keep the injectors open a little longer? If it's keeping them open the same length of time until it almost dies then kicks it up, then I wonder if a slight increase in line pressure would trick it. I doubt a 2.5 ECU would plug into '92-ish 2.2 wiring. If it did, though, it would be sweet because I'd get a higher redline, I think. Jacob
