Well I never heard the whole story on what happened to the original (when they took it into the shop it only had slight over 1.5 quarts of oil in it and had seized, so not a whole lot of story to have been told). The replacement engine that she had put in by an actual local shop here, is now knocking, still runs fine, but has a very pronounced knock. He (the repair shop) did do the headgaskets prior to installation---I don't know whether he used OEM or not, I'm assuming he did, he does do alot of work on subarus. The mechanic is doing everything he can to help her out, he's agreed to install the replacement at no cost, and sell an engine to her at cost, even though the replacement he installed 7 months or so is past warranty. So if a different year will work, all I am going to do is pass along any special instructions and so forth needed to do this swap.

I don't have the fortune of owning a newer gen subaru, but would dearly love too at some point and time. I have 2 89 wagons and love them dearly. What I am in search of is for a friend of mine, who owns a 2000 forester with the 2.5. They replaced the engine with a wrecking yard engine that had only 113k on it, the engine that went bad in the 1st place only had 110k on it to start with. So they couged up the 1650 for an engine, only to have it crap out after 8100 miles. We have located an engine with only 80,000 miles on it however its out of a 2002, we've been told that the interchange is for 2000 only. I find this hard to believe, knowing what I know about the older gens of subs and how interchangeable their parts were. Could someone be so kind as to confirm whether it is indeed just 2000 only or would a 2002 fit and mods needed to be done, what would those mods be. Thanks in advance

Is that the same thing as what is sometimes referred to as the "coolant temperature sensor?" And last night was the first time I've had to put gas in it, I have to retract my complete happiness statement about it, it got 16.8 mpg, I know thats not close to being right, even the one with nearly 300k on it got about 25 and that was using 4x4 alot. And yes it is throttle body, not carbed.

I've got an 89 gl wagon, non turbo m/t d/r with 131,000 on it. Just got it all put together about a month ago, we got it into our wrecking yard after previous owner had a rebuilt engine put into it that blew up after about 800 miles, long story short, I have it now. I put a used engine that had 162k on it, compression was 180-185. My previous subaru also an 89 but the dl, had nearly 300k on it, and I never, never had to step on the gass pedal to get it to start, never even had to crank on it. My current one, I can just sit there and crank and crank and crank, and it will never start, however if I give it a little gas, it will fire right up, need to keep the rpms up for about 10 to 15 seconds before it will Idle on its own. It does this (the having to give it gas part, not the hold rpms up)even after its warmed up. I don't know if this other thing it does has any relation, but when I'm cruising around and pull up to a stop sign, if I just push the clutch in and start to step on the brake, rpm drop very fast and more often than not it will die, sometimes it just drops really fast, and hit nearly zero before rebounding to normal idle rpms. Performance wise, not a single complaint, it runs just flat out awesome, immaculate interior etc etc. Would just like to get this little hiccup figured out, my wife won't drive it, I can't seem to teach her how to use her right foot for the gas and brake at the same time with out planting my face in the windshield LOL. And she doesn't quite grasp just letting the the clutch out and letting compression slow you down. Prior to installing engine I did do all the basic things a person would do, plugs wires cap rotor etc.

As far as a replacement motor, I see 2 places here at work that show they've got motors, prices range from 250.00 to 850.00---I've got the names and numbers for these places, I am not sure if its proper etiquette to just post that here, so to be safe if your interested just send me a PM and I would be more than happy to provide that info

Salvage titles for minor damage! Argh!!!
TRAVIS75 replied to Red92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I work at a wrecking yard, and we do get lots of calls for parts for subarus, and you guys are right, not many are from body shops or insurance companies, unless someone is doing a private pay. As far as licensing a junk vehicle. I've only had to do it once, and it was just a couple weeks ago. As far as I'm concerned, it couldn't have been easier. I was paranoid, no doubt about that. All that was wrong with this when it was brought to us was a blown engine, which I happened to have 3 spares of, I changed the engine, got my date for inspection. I showed up at the state patrol, had my wrecking yard bill of sale, my receipt for the car, and receipt for the engine. The patrolman looked at those, checked the vin on my dash and made sure the vin on the center pillar was the same, and I was done. Didnt have to start it, turn on lights, nothing. I couldn't believe it. It was 6 weeks from the day that I called for the appointment till they did the inspection, and I was concerned about how it would go. I probably just got lucky -
Alternator Problem.........

99.999999% sure that would be the problem -

zip ties work great in place of the bolts for the timing cover -
I work for a wrecking yard in Washington State, but our system (Hollander) lets me locate parts all across the U.S. If you give me a list of exactly what you need (mostly so I don't include names and numbers of places that have parts you don't need) then I'll gladly point you in the right direction. As a start, there is a hood that I looked up for a 91 Loyale (picked 91 cuz ya didn't list a year LOL) and there is a place in Bakersfield, Ca called Corona's Auto Wrecking (I now have an inexplicable desire for a beer) their number is 661-397-6119 they have a white hood for $75.00. I can look up the rest as soon as I have a list of what you need. Good luck

Very informative, I'd never have thought that it had been around since 1910, and that the 58 Imperial was the first modern car. Definately beat subaru by a few decades. The only thing the article doesn't cover, is when it was first applied to manual transmissions, I figured someone probably had done for automatics prior to the 80's, but manuals still has me wondering. Cool article though

I've got it on both of my 89's ones a gl and ones a dl. So far the 82 is the earliest I've heard of, just didn't know if anyone knew if another manufacturer, like cadillac or some other high end vehicle came out with it before subaru. Or could it be one of many of subarus claims to fame LOL
-
I ask this mostly because until my brother in law bought a stealth back in the 90's I'd never seen it. But was subaru the first to come out with vehicle that had cruise control on M/T, and even if not can anyone tell me what the first year of the sub having it was?

Well I've decided against buying it. That low of compression without knowing for sure why, or what kind of project I'd be undertaking to get it better, or even if I could fix it if I knew what it was. If anybody is interested in it the town of Ephrata, about 16 miles from Moses Lake for those of you familiar with North Central Washington area. I can provide number if anyones interested.

Its a non turbo, the car belonged to a "aged" gentleman, who proooobably should have stopped driving 10 years ago, got confused reading a sign that said left turn, made a right, up on the curb and smacked into a light pole. He sold the car to the yard for some money and decided he didn't need to drive anymore since he didn't remember even leaving the house. He bought it new in 89 and it was his daily driver (this is all info from my friend at the yard that has the car), clearly as a daily driver, he didn't drive far on any given day. Its $350 for it, I'll think it over.

So I'm always looking for good spare engines for my 2 89 subarus, just because they seem to be hard to come by. I currently have one back up, but never hurts to have more. They are both wagons, both manuals non turbo, ones a gl and the other a dl. I've purchased and installed a couple of motors for these, one I got an auction here at work and the other the guy just wanted to get rid of after he had a rebuilt put in that threw a rod, that is the one I just put and engine in. Now both of these engines that I put in had "good compression" first one had 176k and 185-190 compression (I tested after it was put in and it was mores like 170-175) the second one I purchased and installed had 158k and a compression of 155 (tested after installation and that was the true compression). I never noticed any difference between the 2 engines. So now I've found one with 117k on it but the compression is 110-115. To me that sounds really low, I called them on it asked them if that was a cold compression or running compression, they said it was the running compression and that was how it tested on all 4. My question obviously being, is that too low, or is it more important that the numbers run close to even? I love the idea of it only having 117k but fear the low comp numbers.

Yeah thats a pretty good deal, I know that Ez Auto Wrecking there in Wenatchee has a fair amount of subaru stuff if you need anything in the future.

No doubt its rare for the gate LOL. Our computer at the yard I work at is linked to Powerlink, so I can check yards all across the U.S. and Canada for parts, I only show 2. One for $200.00 in Maine and another in South Carolina but no price, kinda makes me glad I don't have one if the parts are that hard to find, of course I'm sure 98% of the rest of it is the same as a normal wagon. -
I don't know what kind of car you have, or what kind of car you would like to have a hub off of, but just doing a quick search here at work and typing in a random application (89 subaru wagon) I'm showing that EZ Auto wrecking right there in wenatchee has hubs for 35.00 each. If this isn't the application your looking for, give me the specs of what you want and I'll check our computer here at work and point you in the right direction.

Misfire? I'm stranded in Kent!
TRAVIS75 replied to Ryuko91's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Okay I'm not as familiar with the western half of Washington as I am the eastern, but I found 2 places that have one, the first is I-5 Truck and Auto, they are in Chehalis they've got one for 30 bucks, their number is 800-551-4489, the down side to them is they won't ship, so you'd have to drive there to get it. The second place is called Campbell Nelson, they've got one for $100 (yikes quite a difference in price) and they are in Arlington their number is 888-337-7757. I've got one here for 45.00 but I don't think you want to drive clear to Okanogan Washington to get it. If all else fails, I can ship it to you. Best of luck, hope this helps -

Does it have the 1.6 or 1.8? Is it OHV or OHC? M/T or a/t. I work at a wrecking yard and am linked by computer to other wrecking yards nation wide, I can certainly look it up and get you a phone number to places that have one if you want me to.
