  1. Having added one to mine, I can safely state that it is a good thing. It does a great job of keeping dust, snow, rain, and small children from sticking to the back window. And if you're as cheap as I am, it keeps the back window much cleaner then the 10 year old windshield wiper back there.
  2. I've been reluctant to use seafoam in the oil, because I'm concerned that the carbon is what's holding the rings on my pistons together. In the gas tank however... Is that a good thing to do with SPFI?
  3. Jalopnik's "Down on the street" car for today should be recognizable. However the guy who wrote the post needs to be corrected about some things he said. I've been banned from commenting (long story) but perhaps someone else can speak up?
  4. Is this another case of the wires being inside the engine compartment, on the drivers side next to the firewall? I know that's where they are on my EA82, but it's a 93.
  5. You washed it!!! What were you thinking! Now the 4wd will fail again. On these EA82's, it's very important not to disturb the delicate balance of dirt on the body panels...
  6. I was thinking about this more, and I was wondering if aftermarket CV's could cause this? The previous owner told me that he had recently replaced a CV, but I sincerely doubt that he replaced it with one of decent quality. :-\
  7. Why do I get the feeling we're going to be reading about you in the darwin awards?
  8. A buddy of mine had an older Mercedes that people kept stealing the hood ornament off of. He finally got pissed and insulated it and wired it to a capacitor. No one stole it again. He did end up with all four head lights smashed in one time, but they left the hood ornament alone.
  9. I've noticed the same thing about people who live in the Northern Nevada/Lake Tahoe area. You can drive around in the summer and see all kinds of cars. But when you drive around neighborhoods, odds are there's a subie parked next to the house or in the garage. And during the winter, the other cars stay home.
  10. I'm honestly amazed it was still running. One thing, now it's replaced my mileage is significantly better, and I've got more power. The bad one is apparently OEM, I'm really hoping it wasn't original. From 1993.
  11. Just an example of why it's a good idea to check the cap and rotor when you buy a new car.
  12. Well, the gear oil appears to be new, or at least clean. No grittiness, appropriate level, etc. I guess I can keep driving it while it's making the noise, but since it's my daily driver and wife and kid hauler, I'm concerned about it breaking down in the middle of nowhere because of something I should have fixed. I have located a donor transmission, but I wanted to get a second (or third, or fourth) opinion before I swapped it out.
  13. Great question Mike, and this may be critical. When the gearstick is not in a particular gear, it stops. This eliminates the wheel bearing theory right? So now I'm really confused.
  14. I know it's not tire noise, I just bought a new set of snow tires the week before christmas. I also replaced the wheel bearing on the passenger side not too long ago as well. I'm going to go for a drive today and confirm my answers.. i.e. continues with clutch in, while moving forward, etc. I'm not sure that it is a wheel bearing, since the noise seems to go away in 3rd gear and up.
  15. yes, it continues in neutral. it just continues during acceleration.
  16. 1993 Loyale wagon, 5spd 4wd. E82. SPFI. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear have a strange growl. It's more noticeable in 1st and 2nd, and might still be there just covered up by road noise in 3rd. No other issue that I can tell, except that merging on to the freeway is a religious experience, but that might just be the 4 cylinder more then anything else. So... thoughts? What could be causing the noise? Check the gear oil, it's clean, doesn't smell funny.. no idea what maintenance has been done, but overall the car is extremely clean and gives the impression of being well taken care of.
  17. Yeah, where did that roof basket come from? I think mine would look really good with that..
  18. Wow.. what's with the loyale's always missing the trim off the rear quarter panels. I had to replace mine too.
  19. thanks for the quick replies, that clears everything up. Sounds like it's time to track down an owners manual on ebay for a 93 loyale with cheese.
  20. So I'm a bit confused. I've searched the threads and seen all kinds of doom and gloom about actually using your 4wd. Since it's winter time here in the Sierra Nevada mountains, I want to make sure I understand what's going to happen if I actually use my car. So here's what I get: 1. Don't use 4wd on dry pavement. ok - fine.. makes sense. 2. Don't use 4wd on a hard surface. Umm.. what about ice? Packed snow? 3. if you use 4wd on a hard surface, your transmission will fall out of your car and explode, killing everyone around you. What are the consequences of driving with 4wd engaged on ice/packed snow/etc. Please clarify, I've been reluctant to use the 4wd at all, in fear...
  21. I apparently have one of the pulleys that doesn't like the cold.. I have a squeal under the hood until the car warms up, then everything is fine.
  22. I'm bummed.. not going to be able to make it. Gotta get new shoes for the loyale before I even think about going anywhere for fun. And offroad? fuggitaboutit.
