Any good 2.5's?
eppoh replied to eppoh's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Thanks for the info. Think I will wait for the diesel OB, from Europe. I find it hard to believe Subaru has such an avid following, considering the rash of HG failures over the last 15 years on the 2.5. I guess so many people in the US market just don't care, until it happens to them. Subaru has a business model that reminds me of Peugeot. They are out of the US market. Their last diesel had similar head gasket problems. Is it really rocket science to design a head that won't leak, or is it a matter of designed obsolescence? -
Looks like the Duty C solenoid on my newly purchased 97 Legacy wagon is out. 16 flashes of the AT Temp light after starting and some binding when starting our turning right and when backing up turning. Can that rear part of the tranny, ( transfer case ) be dropped with the tranny in the car? How will I know if the clutch is shot, and if so how expensive is the replacement? The car has 151,000 miles and seems to have been fairly well cared for- except this. Also, I saw a post in the mods section to put a switch in, so that it can be switched to FWD only from the cab. Would putting a fuse in the FWD jumper and driving it that way til I can fix the solenoid hurt anything or maybe lessen the wear on that transfer clutch?

I am considering buying a wagon for the wife. If there were any recent models with the 2.2 I would go with that, but since there are not... Are there any years 2.5's that don't have problems with head gasket leaks? I typically buy a car that is a few years old, and drive it about 200K before replacing it. I don't want to mess with an engine that is problematic. I heard Subaru say back in 2000 they had the head gasket problem fixed, but we all know how well that worked out.

Put new )2 sensor in,. No change. Still does it intermittently, Seems like it is a fuel supply problem, but I do not want to buy an injector. Don't have any way to check fuel pressure. I do notice that when it is pinging, it decelerates much faster when I let the foot off the pedal??? I have done the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, exhaust, intake, timing belts:confused:
-
Mine built up pressure after only about 15 minutes of driving. though it is really hot. Guess it is time for a new cap. Can the build up of pressure affect the way it runs?
-
Cannister still there. Is the tank supposed to be pressurized?
-
I noticed today on my 93 Loyale wagon, some noise when I stopped,. It was coming from my gas cap. The tank had built up a lot of pressure and was venting somewhere. When I opened the cap, a lot of fumes came rushing out. Is this normal?

Rear end singing

155K on the clock. Auto tranny, Not louder but higher pitch. Cruising no sound. No change from cruising to deceleration. -

Don't think it is tires. They have less than a 1000 miles on them. Could be a bearing I guess, It only makes the noise when I accelerate. -
Last night my son and a friend got in the back seat of my 98 Brighton. When I accelerated, they said "cool turbo whine".. Yeah right. I think they were hearing some kind of gear whine from the rear- maybe differential. I have never heard it before, but I never ride in the back. Checked the diff fluid- all okay. Is this normal? Anything to worry about? Reply With Quote

Was under the car today and found a hose hanging down from the bottom of the evap cannister. Is this just a vent to atmosphere, or is it supposed to go somewhere.. like the gas tank? The diagram under the hood doesn't show it.

1994 Loyale 1.8 SFI + me = Crazy

Which side was it? -
Stay away from any 2.5. Even the newer ones. Okay, maybe they don't have as much head gasket leak problems, but they still have them. The 6 cylinder sounds nice, but try changing spark plugs. fugget about it. Jack the engine. Find a nice later model Legacy L with 2.2. Put Outback struts on it and go. Or, if you don't really need All Wheel Drive, find a good 95-97 Honda Accord wagon and just drive the wheels off it for the next 10 years.

Did you ever do this? I have been thinking of doing the very same thing, but would like to hear from someone who has actually done it himself before I go out and buy the parts.

I am having a similar problem with my 93 Loyale after a timing belt change. (done at a shop). Except mine is pinging, I think only on one side. The timing is set to 20. We looked at the marks a second time on the belts/pulleys, and they looked correct, but it is sorta hard to tell for certain from an angle. I have tried everything to find the cause of the pinging with no success. The latest being the transmission modulator ( which was leaking) Changed that but it did not help the ping. Does idle smoother. Sounds like we both have possibly the same problem, but maybe cam timing off a tooth in different directions. Not going to be pulling mine apart again any time soon though. It is not my daily driver. -
Problem not solved., Still pinging,. For some reason it is intermittent. Usually it pings, but not always.

CV Axle tools

Thanks for the links. Looks like some good instructions, but leaves me with a question: no where in edrachs write up does it say anything about removing the brake caliper and rotor. Isn't it necessary? I did not see any pictures. -

I can't picture this. Are you saying remove the upper of the two bolts on the bottom of the strut? Planning on using an electric impact wrench for the axle nut. . It will be a couple days before I get to this, so please do post those links. -
I have a hitch on my wagon from the previous owner. Don't have a wiring harness. Has anyone found a plug in harness? I don't like the splice in kind. Had trouble in the past with corrosion on connectors.

Okay, pulled the line off the modulator and a small amount of ATF leaked out and dripped. I will order one of those tomorrow. It was not obvious to me how that is installed. How does it come out? Also, I imagine there is ATF now in that vacuum line and I wonder about the solenoid valve that is down stream of it. What does it do and if it has ATF in it, will it affect it? BTW, with that line disconnected and plugged, the pining seemed to be a lot less.
