  1. 92 Loyale wagon, 2WD, 203,000 miles ... I hear this clicking or ticking or even squeecking from the right rear. Not while turning, but going straight at low speeds of 5mph. It seems to get worse, progressively. No throttle. Does that mean my axle is bad? Or wheel bearings? I have access to low-mileage axles from another Loyale, should I go ahead and install an axle? I want the easiest fix possible. How much time do I have before this gets real bad?
  2. If it overheats, it will causes damage to heads and head gaskets. Then you will loose coolant and compression. EA82 is not a very good engine. I had an original which died at 175,000 miles (was running on 3 cyls), replaced it with another EA82 which has 110K miles but ticks like a sewing machine - I nicknamed it Zinger. And it's leaking oil badly. All this talk about Subaru longevity is overrated, it is not any more long-lasting than any other car, foreign or domestic. I won't ever buy a EA82 car... Legacy, instead.
  3. The 1992 Loyale motor has only 100K miles but ticks like a sewing machine. I shall hereby now offically name it Zinger . I put in half a quarter of MMO oil, drove for 150 miles and the darn thing is still a Zinger. Maybe this is its destiny. And still loosing lots of oil, at least it gets a good mileage.
  4. I change oil every 3-4K miles and I change the oil filter every other oil change, @ 7K miles I suppose. I changed the filter every time, but stopped recently. I do use the best oil filter I can find, like Purolator Pure One.
  5. That's one reason to drive disposable cars, I have 92 loyale wagon. Wreck it - no big deal. But a 99 model? Glad to see that no flying body parts were involved. After all, _that's_ the important thing.
  6. I agree, get a 10 year old Legacy with 2.2L, it will be more cost-effective. Just make sure lots of parts have been replaced. Find one on ebay, with replaced tranny. That's what I am looking for, although I want a manual for a change.
  7. I am interested in a 90's Legacy wagon, with that reliable 2.2L engine, and a manual tranny. What's the best year to get? After '93 I presume, due to the newer AC system. I like the older style, before the Forester.
  8. I had it worse, I had mice or some other critters chew on the wire of the fuel pump. It would randomly not start or stall, and I couldn't figure out why.
  9. I've had timing belts break and get stranded. This happened at 150K, the first time they got replaced.
  10. I find that ebay is another indicator of price. Sometimes a bit low, and sometimes too high, so just throw out statistical anomalies to get a good picture. Looking at completed auctions, it seems that early 90's Loyales go from about 700 to something like 1300 for nice ones that are 4wd, etc. I am thinking about putting it on ebay, but I have no idea what it will bring.
  11. I made sure that the tank is full, but when I try to spray the windshield fluid onto the windshield, nothing comes out. Why is that? The wiper blades work, but that's about all. 92 Loyale
  12. Thanks for the data point... Interesting. 4WD is a huge plus of course. Maybe I should put it on ebay and let it resolve the matter.
  13. I basically want to know what other, early 90's Loyales sell for, with comparable mileage.
  14. I am trying to sell the station wagon. 200K miles on it but 100K miles on EA82 1.8L engine, and 40K mis on auto tranny. Basically the drivetrain has been replaced. No major dents. AC not charged. I am thinking 750? Is that too low?
  15. It's actually 96, and it has 150K miles. No apparent problems, but I am skeptical about 2.5L engine. Is there any chance it had 2.2L at that time?
  16. 1) They are sensitive to overheating, get cracked heads. 2) They leak oil, lots of it. 3) They tick. It's about average engine in automotive world, not too bad but not that great either. I had an engine which went for about 170K miles until it started running on 3 cylinders... and burned / lost lots of oil. The only pos. is that they get great mileage, I get 29 in an auto, and with manual, probably get 35. Others are right, get a 2.2L as a better motor, but I have no experience with it. Legacy is just a much better car than Loyale.
  17. I am going to look at a 98 Outback tomorrow. Did it come with 2.5L engine as standard, or could I get the 2.2L engine as in Legacy? What's a good price range for it? I don't know the miles on it, nor if manual/auto, but the asking price is 3K. I am a bit scared about all the 2.5L engine problems I hear on this forum in phase I 2.5. Would a good price compensate for it? Any issues to watch out for? We have a 01 Outback in the family, and it runs very nicely.
  18. This Loyale has a tranny fail about @ 150K miles and it has been 50K since then. It's automatic. I want to drain the transmission fluid, replace the filter. Does the torque converter has a drain? Would using synthetic help?
  19. At that mileage, it run into some kind of problem, or several. Wouldn't start, and when it did, was really low on power and had gone acceleration. I was told that it was running on 3 cylinders. It was also somehow loosing a lot of oil. I tried all I could to determine what it was, and then just had another EA82 installed. And it had this starting problem, probably different from the engine problem - crank, but not start. Checked the fuel filter and that's all I could think of. I guess I should have checked the gas line too. But for me this was the final straw, and I got a whole parts car and stripped it. EA82 is not a very good engine. About the only virtue I can think is its economy. It's very good on gas. And, with the new EA82, which only had 100K miles, I am now getting this tick-tick-tick. It's bad when it's cold, but to some extent, it ticks all the time, especially at half-throttle. Cannot remember if the last one ticked the same. You are right about overheating. There was an episode due to a faulty coolant line. Probably cracked the heads, but seems to run just as good.
  20. This 92 Loyale is on its second engine. The last one lasted until 179K mis. I cannot remember if it was ticking or not. This one only has 100K miles but it recently started ticking. Seems to run OK otherwise. On this little disposable car, I am not worried. I get enough power, decent mpg and that's just fine with me.
  21. I found out that my coil wire was loose... Hm, not idea why. I put it back in, and it runs better. Still idles a bit rough, but it may be a vacuum leak or something. And feels like it needs timing set, but at least it is nothing urgent. I have a Craftsman timing light, just need to figure out how to use it.
  22. I also have a 92 Loyale also with about 205K miles. I flush it by draining the radiator, disconnecting the lower radiator hose. Refilling it, then running the engine, making sure the T-stat opens, then draining again. 1.8L engine, needless to say, is sensitive to overheating.
  23. I will do that, even if it's an auto. It's probably the crappy $10.99 plug wires from Autozone. I only got them because there was nothing else. The computer has been setting a code for over a year, but I don't know how to pull codes on it.
  24. 92 Loyale, 1.8L with 110K miles on engine It hesitates sometimes from taking off. Almost like it cuts off. Does not feel like a tranmission problem, but maybe fuel delivery? The fuel filter is less than 1 year old. What could it be? Also, it slightly misses at idle.
