  1. I don't really have a solid understanding of it either. Mine developed a weird starting problem - where it wouldn't start. Turn over ---- but not start. I tried everything. All ignition components were good. Like plugs and plug wires and dist. cap and rotor. I got so fed up with it, and tired of the car parked on the side of the road, I threw out the whole engine and put a whole other engine with its EFI stuff!!!! Easier than troubleshoting the son of a b1tch for 3 weeks. It will forever remain a mystery why it didn't work.
  2. I need to replace the windshield on my 92 Loyale. Any suggestions?
  3. I had my Loyale stop in the middle of nowhere due to computer failure. And I thought it was the timing belt.
  4. It is 1992 Loyale. I have something setting a code via CEL. I also have a slight miss at idle (though not at throttle). Could someone post a pic of what wires I need to jump and where? I already looked under the dash but there were lots of wires. Do I need a scanner? I've done it on other cars and had Check Engine Light flash out the codes.
  5. how do you know the axles are worn out? I have 191K on mine but apparently nothing wrong with them. I do have spare axles from a 4WD loyale (Mine is 2wd)
  6. RedRX How many miles on that engine? I have a EA82 with 100K miles, it runs almost like new.
  7. Agree about the cheapest plug wires. Maybe there is something wrong with my compression tool, becase the next time I tried to pull compression, it registered 0 on all cylinders. I bent it slightly at the tip, and ever since then, it doesn't work.
  8. I too have a permanent engine light on, something is setting the code. I don't know how to pull the codes on it.
  9. I didn't know that.... Interesting. I pulled a compression check when cold and got 150 on one side and 90 psi on the other side. But when it it hot, I wonder if the head expands and seals the crack. It had an overheating incident a while ago. I doubt there is any point in compression/leak down tests because I don't plan to do anything with the engine.
  10. I am going to change the plug wires to something better instead of the cheapest set from Advanced Auto Parts (that's all they had at the time).
  11. I had something similar with 92 loyale, had 190K miles at the time. first, all acceleration was gone, took forever to get to 45mph. I think I was running on 3 cyls. Then, it was impossible to start. Hot or cold. Couldn't figure out what it was. Just gave up on the thing and installed an entirely different engine / EFI. That's my solution. Albeit expensive and time consuming. I hate troubleshooting EFI problems, could be a million things. Bad injectors, bad computer, distributor, etc.
  12. 92 Loyale, this has been discussed somewhere but my search has been unsuccessful. I also know it is pretty hard if not impossible to diagnose this, but FWIW, I have a slight miss on this engine. It runs well on highway but when idling, I can tell. The spark plugs and plug wires are from this summer, although the latter were the cheapest kind (you know $9.99 deal) so I wonder if they cracked inside or something. What else can cause a miss?
  13. My 92 is intermittent and only when cold so it doesn't concern me. Just changed oil with 10/30, see what that does. Doesn't cause any driving problems, the compression is awesome.
  14. Yes, I did a coolant flush this summer - on all my vehicles. Now I get an intermittent leak, cannot figure out where it is coming from. Today got it on the ramps and it is not there anymore. Will have to wait until it leaks again and look. Yes, I will replace radiator hoses. 191K miles is a lot of mileage and they are original.
  15. This one does it when it is cold but goes away after about 15 mins. Though lately, it hasn't been ticking. I think cold weather and wrong oil viscosity may have something to do with it.
  16. I fully agree with the cheap part. The market value is abysmal. That's a good thing, you can get one cheaply. Still, I want a Legacy for my next ride.
  17. the donut gets thrown out on all cars I have. full size spare replaces it. I think the logic behind the donut is that it is compact, light, which may accumulate into some savings over the years.
  18. The above is good advice. Don't know what I can tell you that you don't already know. I have a 92 model. I had the tranny fail at about 150K miles. I think it was loosing fluid gradually until the loss accumulated into failure. I was not the main driver of the car over these years. Pay attention to all fluid levels: Oil, coolant, tranny -- In my unit, I am loosing all 3, albeit gradually. I always run at 3500 rpms at near 55-60, and have taken it higher. I figure that's OK. One particularly bitchy thing about maintenance is the dist. rotor - it has a tiny screw which is hard to remove. There was a thread about that.
  19. distributor cap and rotor condition upper and lower radiator hoses, belts air filter At 80,K miles, replace O2 sensor Pull codes on it
  20. >>>>> It turns out the small right-angled hose above the water pump had literally exploded - there's the coolant leak! I had problems with the same part - which lead to overheating in my case.
  21. I will look for the bubbles in the radiator. I haven't changed the oil in 4,000 miles (just getting ready to do it). Also the weather conditions have been interesting lately, very cold, snow, lots of moisture in the air - don't know if any of that contributes. But, I am inclined to think it is the head gasket.
  22. I have never seen this before. Does this definitively indicate a blown head gasket? The Loyale runs very well, no problems with acceleration. It had an overheating episode a few months ago, which probably did crack the heads as EA82 is vulnerable to that. Oh yeah, I am loosing coolant.
  23. with RWD, you need something real heavy in the back. I have a RWD station wagon, one of the full size monsters and that thing can fly on the interstate with the big V8 engine but gets stuck real easy in almost nothing. Even in mud, which is very annoying. I also have a FWD tempo, yet another vehicle handles well in snow. Though 4wd would be noticeably better than either - I almost got stuck today even in the Loyale.
  24. I got Advanced Auto parts oil, 10/30. I asked them who makes it and they said Shell does. The filter is the usual Purolator PureOne.
