  1. Different sources say there will be a giant sunfoof on the GTs. Others say none at all.Any info??
  2. The rubber part of out balancer failed on our 98 GT. The pully, while still intact moved back and ate the cam covers and A/C belt. I will post a picture sometime.
  3. Autozone will hook the scanner to your OBD II port for free! And give you the codes which describe the condition. Screw the dealer! Some charge 125 bucks for this!
  4. When the KS went bad in our 98 GT it was intermittant at first. The CEL would go on occasionally and reset after a while. We let it slide for a bit. Later the KS went bad full time. The computer pulls a LOT of timing to be safe so the engine will not be damaged. Power is significantly down and gas mileage gets very poor. You will know!
  5. Odds are good you need only replace the mast. Unscrew the cover. (It's a little chrome piece) Turn the radio on and off until the mast comes out. It's OK to help it. When it comes out you will see that the bottom of the mast is just a plastic track. It's really clever the way it works. I'll bet you will see the stripped spots! It is a common replacement part. To replace it push the new mast in. Turn the radio on and off a few times until it goes all the way down. Replace the cover. It's easy. Take the old one out and take it to the dealer. The masts for the wagon and sedan are different and do not interchange. The dealer gave me one for the sedan as he didn't think I looked like a wagon sort of guy! I couldn't figure out why it didn't work until I put them side by side.
  6. Are you sure you need the whole antenna? The antenna itself is easy to replace if it has broken off. If the motor is fine it is a piece of cake! (My wife likes to listen to the radio in the car wash!)
  7. Well let me rephrase the question. Are the newer Subarus still as unreliable as the Gen 1 engined cars? The GT is the best handling car I have owned. I rent cars every week for work and the Suby is an incredible value. I would hate to have to get a Toyota or Honda as they do not handle nearly as well.
  8. 98 Subaru GT Wagon 5 speed. Original owner. Starter, battery and clutch at 40,000 (warranty), Front seal at 70,000, Head gasket at 80,000, Harmonic balancer failed at 85,000 and ate the front of the engine (haven't heard of this one before. But Subaru picked up a piece of this repair). Starter at 84,000. Head gasket, seals and balancer should almost last for the life of the car! Of course the head gasket is not covered for Gen 1 engines. So the car is somewhat less than totally reliable. Are the newer cars any better? I was really interested in the 2005 GT with the turbo engine.
