  1. My daughter called today and could not get the car out of gear. The shifter would not move. Then she could not get it in gear because of all the grinding. Obviously the clutch did not fully disengage. What should I look for for??? The clutch has slowly engaged closer to the floor over time. It only has about 25,000 miles on it. Ideas??
  2. A good muffler place could do this for you. When the GT needed a new exhaust I got 2 1/4 all the way back! And without a resonator it still sounds the same.
  3. Hi. Moron here. I can generalize about Toyotas because I have owned so many and still do. I have not had a major mechanical problem on any of them. Ever. Current fleet includes a Tacoma. Non maintenance item arguably is an O2 sensor but after 11 years I can give them that. Just the usual brakes etc. Wifes Scion. 2.5 years old. Never back to the dealer for anything except for the free oil changes. My Dad's old PU. He passed away and I just like it. A harmonic balancer went bad. The adhesive on the rubber let go and produced a horrible squeal. Still drove fine. But after 22 years I can give them that. It only had two warranty items. The rear spring sagged when he put on a cap. Toyota put on a HD spring at N/C. And there was a rust through on the side of the bed. Fixed N/C. I have had my share of Corollas and nothing but maintenance.
  4. Sad to say yes. My 97 Toyota PU is great and warranty work consisted of a glove box door that warped. Everything else has been maintanence. 98 Subaru. Battery, alternator, master cylinder, clutch, lots of light bulbs. Maintanence. Plus ... Need I mention headgaskets?
  5. Sorry it took so long to post. Stopped at the dealer and they were replaced in an hour. The belts look nice and work great! Thanks Subaru!!!
  6. Had a buddy who used a minivan door contact on the ashtray. It is used to make connections for power locks when the door is closed. The car would only run if the ashtray was pushed in. Slick! No switch to look for!
  7. "Thank you for visiting the Subaru Web site and for your message. I am sorry to learn of the concern with the seat belts in your 1998 Legacy GT Wagon. Per page 6 of the 1998 'Warranty and Maintenance' booklet, seat belt coverage lasts for the useful life of the vehicle and includes seat belts and related components which fail to function properly during normal use. Upon inspecting your vehicle, your Subaru dealer can advise you if the repairs to the seat belts in your vehicle would be covered by warranty or not. When you schedule your appointment to have this concern physically inspected by your dealer, please contact us with the appointment date and the name of the dealer. We would like to follow-up with the dealer upon their inspection of your Legacy Wagon. Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance. Sincerely, XXXXXXX" I may try to do this on Friday!!!! Gotta love those Subaru folks!
  8. If you go to a real auto parts store they carry Dorman lug nuts. They cab pull one for Chrysler wheels and they know what a Subie needs. They have every combination under the sun! Heck! With those guys I put Lincoln wheels on my Toyota PU!
  9. Here is another one to consider for the not starting bag of tricks. Got in the Sub today and all I got was clicks. Hmmmm. Cleaned the battery posts and got the same. Put on the charger and it would not charge, It would not draw any amps. Put the charger to 200 amps for fast start and still no amps drawn. Still the same clicks. I started thinking about a bad ground when the radio would not play. The electrical system would come and go. I pulled the battery out and went to the auto parts store to test it. It would vary from 3 to 10 volts and they couldn't charge it either. New battery solved the problem!
  10. Eibach. Discontinued H & R Discontiniued B & G Discontinued Intrax Maybe next July. I ordered KYB GR2 struts. They will arrive any day. I did a search but did not find much. Can we cut off 1/3 of a coil???
  11. Summitracing.com has the best price on KYB struts. Free shipping just a 10 buck handling charge. They sell lots of stuff besides racing parts for American cars.
  12. We had a harmonic balancer go bad at 80,000 which ate the front of the engine. SOA paid for the parts. We paid for the labor. Since it was no longer of warranted I was happy. We have to travel 60 miles one way for a good dealer.
  13. With a bad knock sensor the computer gets very conservative on ignition timing, so no engine damage occurs. Mileage will be poor and power will be down. If you do not check mileage or romp through the gears you will not notice any issues. My wife didn't notice but I did!
  14. Are there any codes? When our knock sensor went bad the mileage dropped pretty badly also.
  15. My 9145 works great on all of our cars including out 98 GT. It has paid for it self many times over! http://actron.com/product_category.php?id=249
  16. Also check the IAC. I had the same symptoms. It just needed to be cleaned.
  17. I am sorry you misunderstood my point. If any and all problems can be cured by a rebuild then there is no skill used for diagnosis. And today many of the problems are computer problems and the transmissions are mechanically sound. The dealer we took my daughter's to remembered the problem and looked up the TSB. It was repaired inexpensively.
