  1. AAMCO is the worst. However the economics even at better places is that if they rebuild the transmission it will not come back for warranty work. For around 185 dollars in parts for common RWD trannys the rest is labor. All trans problems can be cured by a rebuild. There is no skill to this. As always, ask for references for shops near where you live. Here is a an example. My daughters 99 Cougar spit up trans fluid. The shop had it for 3 days and needed 2200 dollars to repair it because it was "all burned up". I stopped by to look at it and it was still sitting where we had parked it. I mean really.... We drove it there. I told him at that price we would just drive it until it went out. He started screaming "Then you will crack the case and it will cost you 4500!". The dealer had a service bulletin on the problem and it cost 180. `
  2. For those of you wondering how it all turned out, it turned out OK. I took out my trusty Haynes manual and went through step by step. Took out glove box and checked for power at the blower. 11.5 volts. Not bad. It went on and off with the key and switch. Wires fuse, switch and relay were OK. It said to ground the black/yellow wire to check for bad ground. Nothing. Must be the motor. Tried it on the battery and dead. I tried it a few more times and nothing. And then it started working! It must have been a dead spot on the brushes. It is now all together now and working!
  3. The blower went dead. A search showed several possibilities. One was the resistor block but it seems OK because all 4 speeds are gone. If it was the resistor only the high would work. I checked the fuses and replaced them with new ones and still no fan. I can hear the relay click but I still think this may be the cause. Exactly where is the blower relay on a 98 GT Legacy and where is a good source for these? I plan on doing this next week when it warms up a bit in Chicago. Thanks in advance.
  4. I might be willing to buy a 2 door Legacy GT if it looked like that. Forget the windows. I like the lack of a frame. It makes it alot easier to get in and out.
  5. The RE92s on my 98 GT wagon with 5MT have been great. We have never broken the tires loose in rain or snow. They last 40,000 miles on the car and I drive aggressively. Are there better tires out there? Sure. But they seem well matched to the car.
  6. Well the point is those are chips and damage from the outside. A coating on the inside will not protect your vehicle from that kind of damage.. If you wash your car and fix paint chips when they happen you will not have an issue on a modern car.
  7. Why bother? My GT Legacy is 9 years old and no rust anywhere. The old days of cars rusting through in a few years is over. These coatings will NOT help bubbles on the outside of the paint. That is a whole separate issue.
  8. The mileage went from 22 to 18. The power was down and I could notice. But my wife didn't notice any difference. You must press the gas pedal to be able to tell.
  9. I had a bad Knock Sensor once and the ECM pulled a lot of timing to save the engine. It lost a lot of power and the mileage went to heck. It made a difference.
  10. Well it is not like I was down shifting or anything. If I let off the gas in first or second it rocks around.
  11. To prevent the engine from rocking when I let off the gas in a 98 GT 5 speed? It is not a problem accelerating just when slowing down using the engine. It is kind of violent these days causing the car to be less than totally enjoyable to drive. Anyone have a part number handy??? Thanks!
  12. It is never wet. It just is very frayed. The warrenty page does not seem to apply to the seat belts for a 1998. It is very odd.
  13. Our front belts got eaten where they go through the guide near the door. Has anyone else had this problem?
  14. I dunno. No complaints here! Pretty good on dry pavement, good in rain and good in the snow (but AWD helps). .
  15. But I have almost 100,000 miles on the car! There is nothing wrong with 40,000 miles on a set of tires.
  16. Bridgestone Potenza RE-92 205/55-16. on a 98 GT wagon. Perfect match for the car and last about 40,000 miles. This is my 3rd set.
  17. Our pulley failed on our 98 GT and ate the front plastic engine cover. The pulley moved back, made some noise and soon oil started leaking out. It was a true mess. But yes the pulley can and does fail.
  18. The rubber part failed on the damper on my 98 GT. The pully moved back and it ate its way through the plastic front cover. Not a pretty sight.
  19. If you leave it disconnected the ECU will pull timing and set a CEL. You will get poor milage and power but it will run.
  20. If the power went out sure. But did he panic? Why didn't he unlock the door manually?? There is a button you know. He broke tha door handle? Yeah he panicked.
  21. After 95,000 miles it is time for struts. While the struts will be off it may be wise to replace the springs since I would like to autocross the car next summer. Any ideas for a 98 Legacy GT wagon? We got a new car but this one was way too much fun to drive to sell it. Plus daughter leaves her car home and drives it to school in the winter when the roads are bad.
  22. Thats why I like going to Canada! I can do 100! 100 SOMETHING! But it is still 100! And what about your left handed metric hammer!
  23. Heh Heh! It happened while you werent looking! Most all cars made in the US are metric! We buy pop in 2 liter bottles! Our engine sizes are in liters. And lumber is still in inches but a 2 x 4 does not measure 2 x 4! Not sure if it ever did!
  24. I agree the 05 is a nice car. I road tested one thinking I would replace my 98 GT. Yeah and it costs 6,000 more than my 98 Legacy GT did new. Subaru has deceided to go upmarket. But now they are competing with lower market Mercedes and Lexus. Suddenly they are not such a good deal anymore. I will definately need to rethink my next car. And how about that new grill they are trying to foist on us? It looks as if a stylist went fishing and was inspired by the dead carp laying on the dock. Ick!
