  1. Strange. If you were driving, your coolant should never be luke warm under normal circumstances. So, if, like the quote says, stuck thermostat? So your engine does not feel so hot, but tells you, "I'm so overheated I'm about to kill myself, and it will be your fault!" Believe the gal you came home with. Probably the thermostat primary, possibly water pump secondarily. Also you are fortunate, but come on guys, we all have done it, but usually we are expecting the coolant geyser immediately. Replace the thermostat, it is cheap and easy as long as you do not snap a bolt. Sticking thermostats can be intermittent. If you don't replace, and it sticks, hit the housing with the handle of a hammer, or use a rubber mallet.
  2. Wow been a long time, not even done the basics. wiring scares me:confused:, but i have some time off and may do the continuity test for every wire from ecu pin to all their destinations. Should this be done in a heated shop with the wife bringing in sweet and tasty Christmas leftovers, or in the cold rain or snow in the driveway like I was planning?
  3. Been there, done that, you think they make the T- shirt for it? I had replaced 3 bearings, one on one side(it was one of the reasons I got the car for 95 bucks 2 yrs ago) then two on the opposite side (thanks SJR for the parts). My problem ended up being my threads on my drive shaft. Weird huh? The nut would pop the threads, you would think the pin would stop it or break, but no. So here I am driving it and it works fine (because the bearing is fine), but because of the undue pressure of not being held tight as designed, it quickly fried bearings. add sauce mmmmm fried bearings. Changed out driveshaft (thanks again SJR), put the new used hub(I never actually replaced berrings) and bingo. 2 days later it starts making noise again:banghead: but it is ok, complete rookie move, I didn't tighten the 3 lug nuts properly! SO i tighten them, even adding a 4th for good measure, been fine ever since. Maybe something in there you can use, if not have a laugh at mine(and SJR's parts) expense.

  5. I saw an e81 in the arlington WA pull a part 2 weeks ago. I am going there on tue, to pull the starter off it if it is still there, private message me with your phone# if you want me to look for you. The car in the parts yard looked like so many other subarus in back lots on grandma's or uncle across our great land, looking like they were cared for once, but because of bad brakes, fried clutch, or crappy cv joint it's doomed to a wrecking yard. I bet with a pint of gas and a battery I could have got her on the road. anyway, e81's should be easy to get. i think so anyway. Dann

  7. Yeah I'll check it out. I may get a coupler and lengthen it that way if all else fails. Why are the simple projects riddled with menial physical probs?????

I've replaced all sbf fuses, and have a complete factory wiring manual, but I find it difficult to trace, understand and apply what fragments I do understand to the problem.When I figure this out, I plan to make a step by step trouble shooter with pics for all the slobs like me. It took me a week to figure out TCS was transmission control system, if that is even right,. Thanks Dann

  10. I am talking, BASIC, 1st timer head job, no mods, just to have a good to go motor.

Ok I'll with the coil igniter wire, but my diagnosing plug is dead, and will not communicate any codes(and never has, even while car was running).Also my engine light has never worked, running, or pre-start with key on. would love to have that fixed, of course this at least could be easier, thanks Dann.
  12. Ok, Well anyone know where I can get a 10x1.25 55mm-60mm stud bolt. I believe the head side is 13mm??
  13. Ok, how easy is it to do the heads on a 2.2? Is it worth the trouble? I might want to do it for the learn'n. what you think?
  14. I went to hookup the exhaust to the engine, it had no stud bolts.OK, so I go buy 4 stud bolts. (this car was mostly together) So I loosely hook up the driver's side of the exhaust, go to the passenger side, and the bolts are too short. I end up buying 50 mm, bolts, and they are still to short. I talk to someone and they say that , some of these motors have a block that goes between the head exhaust, and the exhaust pipe connection. He rattles through a bucket of old parts thinking he has one, but doesn't. Anyone else know bout this?????? Got one??? My other e81 does not not have this, am I making sense???? Thanks Dann
  15. Ok, yellow wire to coil, I assume that is with the key on. Now my backup car is dying. The car left is the 1989 subie sw e82 (no turbo), I bought last year for 100.00. I could license my gashog 83 4x4 ramcharger. I hate problems:banghead: I should pick up another e81 or e82 vehicle. Oh that reminds me, I need to post on a e81 exhaust "block"? anyway. Thanks
  16. One engine I no extras, the once running one will be a turnkey including wire harness ecu, and whatever else I want, except for body parts. Speaking of that, What is a frankenmotor? Thanks Dann.
  17. As far as the blown fuses, only the arcing starter and that is an assumption, nothing has blown since, either cause whaterever else is fried too, or the losse starter was the cause. What is the "plus side of the coil" ? is that side a little bigger?..... No really what is the plus side? I have no power out of the coil while cranking. Oh I see, the sparkwire side is the plus side, no spark there while cranking. Are there other fusable links, besides the onle in the main relay box? I had already put back the original parts back that I had changed out. So what wires do I test to see if it is the ignition switch? Thanks Dann
  18. I believe him.He says when he cranks it he has no spark-meaning-no spark. when he push starts it, something obviously changes. The only thing I can think of is either some relay, or starter draw, you say this is impossible, and I know this guy, 44 year old get anything running, car auction hound. So i believe him when he says no spark. Sure it may not be the same as my problem, but since you are the best electrical guru, I thought I would ask. Ok have a nice day:rolleyes:
