  1. Not sure if this had been posted before, but I just found this and thought you all would like to have the info. http://www.cars101.com/oldsubaru.html
  2. I did very similar matinence to my '82 wagon before I went out to the desert for nine day trip a few weeks ago and the car was fine. No trailer, but the interior was loaded to the point that there wasn't any extra room in the back (or the front for that matter.) Just load the trailer carefully, paying attention to weight distribution and you'll be fine.
  3. Funny, I was just thinking after my trip out to the desert how hard it would be to find and install AC in the wagon.
  4. I do most of my internet surfing on the Wii, which makes it rather limited on what I can do.
  5. I am not sure if you can download from youtube, but maybe you could contact the poster and see if he could send over the file?
  6. My '82 Wagon came with those lights, and it is a 1.8 dual range. The round light style originaly was an all the '81 models. I am unsure when they started the trim level seperation... I would guess '83.
  7. That's great! I have been toying with the ides of getting an old beater truck and attaching a engine hoist to the bed, but I like your idea better! I don't even need to find a beater truck.
  8. Not sure of how to fix, but I thought I would share my speedometer woes. I was going through dealing with a semi functioning speedometer needle on my '82 GL right up to last month, where the needle actually fell off of the panel and is now loose in the instrument cluster. Before it fell off, it was making an awful "the most annoying sound in the world" noise. I tried switching out three speedo cables and it still kept making the noise, gradually kept reading an incorrect speed until it was always pointed at 80mph no matter how fast I was going. The odometer and tripometer still work normally though, and I don't have to turn up the radio to keep myself from going mad. I am interested to see if there is an easy fix (other than pulling the dash and swapping clusters.)
  9. I am a member of the mile high club... er the high mile club too. My '82 GL wagon made it to 195,000 before the engine threw a rod. Had I not been using it to deliver newspapers for a couple of years I know it would have hit 200,000 on the orginal motor. Where can we sign up for membership?
  10. First off, thank you to everyone who has helped me get this going in such a short time frame. Everyone who sent me parts quickly and the others who fielded my silly noob questions I couldn't have done it with out you. It's looking like I will make it out to burningman again this year. Even after all the hoops I have jumped through with the wagon, there are still a few things I am going to have to address when I get back. Fuel gauge still doesn't work, the connections to the sender look good, so I am guessing the sender is done. My spedometer needle fell off today, it has been dying for quite some time and I am glad I don't have to put up with the sound anymore. I have been dreading that replacement because I have to pull the dash to get to it... While I was working on the brakes today, I realised I don't think the "hill holder" has ever worked in my car, so there is something new for me to learn! I will post up some pics tommorrow of the wagon and a few choice replacement pieces. )'(
  11. Well the dealer qouted me $250.00 for a new one, which is ridiculous. I scored one from a fellow board member for much much less (thank you pooparu) only because the junkyards around here don't have anything that old. Someone here might help if you have the same problem. Try a WTB ad...
  12. I have AWD in my Galant and I love it. I think it is worth the wait, especially if you already have your mind set on getting a car with it. The only downside I have encountered with AWD is you should replace all the tires when they go bad, which can get pricey, but that's not enough for me to give it up.
  13. When I first got my '82, I was having problems up hills as well. It would buck and sputter and almost die. I thought it might be the gas tank so I had it bead blasted to get some of the crud out (surprisingly I had a warranty on the car and the bead blasting wasn't out of pocket) and then changed the rear fuel filter. It still was giving me some issues so I cut a little off the fuel hose that sucked the gas out of the tank and I haven't had a problem since. That was probably over ten years ago...
  14. Well first off, I think that legacy you posted is AWD. I don't think Subaru was offering anything less than AWD on all of their cars by 1992. The learning curve for "fix it yourself" will go up a bit for the Legacy. The older generation of Subarus are much more simple and almost everything is easy to get to. Finding parts for the older Subarus can be hit or miss. I have noticed some of the parts for my '82 are starting to get a bit scarce (although I do live in California, and the junkyards don't hold onto anything that old anymore.) I have found what I need from other members on this board, so they are out there if you do a little hunting. Everything else I have found at the local parts stores here in town. If the don't have it, they have been able to order it for the most part. Good luck with your Subaru hunt!
  15. Hmmmm, its hard for me to say without looking at everything. My hub didn't make noise all the time when it was going out, and gave me wierd braking issues as well. What about the calipers? There isn't much else it could be. Maybe it is different types of pads like you were thinking.
  16. I just got both from the dealership for about $12.00 a piece. Coulda saved a little with my discount through a friend if I wasn't in a hurry (which turned out to be for naught anyway.)
  17. I learned way more working on my '82 wagon (essentially the same as a brat mechanically) than I ever did in Autoshop in highschool. Also having this forum as a resource is wonderful too. The brats are good little cars, fairly economical and can really take a beating. I'd say go for it if there isn't any major rust issues.
  18. I agree, it's all about finding the right buyer. There are some 2WD Subaru wagons that are priced in the $1500, so maybe you could dazzle some dumb Californian and get more. I'd say yours would sell for no more than $2000.00 to a more experienced car enthusiast, its just not "old enough". If you hold on to it and keep in better condition than it is now, in 20 years you might get $4000-$5000.
  19. Don't feel bad, I just found out I have a stripped hub as well (and a bad axle, go figure). If you are running it stripped keep an eye on the axle nut, if you neglect it too long it will strip out the nut and fall off.
  20. I think I could do that. I don't leave until next weekend so you'll have to wait a little bit.
