  1. Ok, on my 84 GL, ************achi carb, dual range 4x4, the new problem is this: On the EGR on the drivers side, it is a hose going into a round type thingy that looks like at first a vacuum canister, but it isn't, with another hose going to a funky plastic thingy, then hose to the air cleaner housing. The plastic round thingy, which I assume is a muffer or some sort, or sound deadner, melted at the bottom.. I could not figure out what the hell was wrong with my exhaust, it sounded like the engine was coming out of the hood, but that is because EGR was "pissing into the wind". I just ran a heater hose and bypassed that round muffler/deadener thingy and put it in the other plastic tube thingys and then to the housing, and it is doing its job.. still loud as hell tho.. I will hopefully get a new egr muffler thingy tomorrow. Can I just block off that egr? if I block it, it is quite quiet and doesn't run afoul. but with emissions and such, I would rather have it do what it is supposed to do.. If I cannot find this round canister/muffler/deadener thing, what do I substitute? I want something in there to quite the damn thing down, otherwise, I am just gonna block it.. sorry about it getting long winded, but suggest something, please! /mike Michael Dominesey mikldom@yahoo.com
  2. the "replacement" stud (7/16 20) is holding quite nicely, no problems there No luck on replacement 10 1.25 studs.. went to the Dealer, they gots nothing.. went to Toyota dealer, they were a much better help, but what they had was 1/2 inch too short. Went to a specialty fastener store, they don't have it long enough either They did have "all thread" in 10mm 1.25 pitch. 23 bux!!! ouch!! but I did buy it, and cut it with my air cutter, and smooth the ends with the dremel.. put them in, and all is well. New problem, on another post.. Thanks guys for helping out!!! /mike mikldom@yahoo.com
  3. It is tapered.. should I get a new tap (bottoming tap). My understanding is that the studs just hold, and the nuts is what provides the torque to bring the flange up. it is working tho.
  4. BUMP!!! come on, what have others done? I know somebody knows how to do this. how hard is it to get the dash out? /mike
  5. I have Pugeot 15 rims and I was able to fit 205/75/15 tires on there... All terrains, and they measure about 28.5 or so.. I had to grind a little out of there, but it fits nicely.. I have a 4 inch lift. hope this helps. /mike
  6. got the one done.. bought a 7/16 20 pitch x 2.5 inch stud, a 7/16 20 pitch tap, and some cutting oil... oil'd her up, cranked it in, took it all the way back out, reoiled, back in to clean the junk, sprayed brake parts cleaner in there and installed the stud.. worked like a charm.. Now I have another to do, and still need new 10 mm studs for the other side, as they are all rusted up. thanks.
  7. 84 Wagon has rain gutters. Goto Craigslist and Ebay, Look up Yakimas or Thules bar sets for Rain Gutters.. Very Common. I found a set at a junkyard, and got them for 15 bux. I personally own 4 sets of Yakimas for different vehicles.. what is nice, is that when you get a new car, you just need a new set of clips if you have Q towers. I have a set of Yaks on my lifted 84 wagon with a SUV style cargo carrier.. that is 3 x 5.. It is humongous! just look around, and good luck. /mike
  8. I don't think I have a blown head gasket, but a little leak I saw at the bottom of the head one time, not since. She stays full of coolant, I just don't like seeing the needle get close to hot, then go down to below 1/2, to then get close to hot a few minutes later.. and I mean CLOSE! I am going to do a thermostat swap tomorrow, and probably a radiator cap, as it appears it has the original on there (177k miles on it). Could this be a problem with the radiator, or maybe, I should go ahead and change the head gaskets (I swear no white smoke/steam, except when first started early in the morning, but dissapears after a couple of minutes, so it must be just condensation). Let me know! /mike
  9. Nice to see closer people on this thread... Goldsboro, NC, only 2 1/2 hours from me, My Twin brother lives in Roanoke, and I am there all the time since I travel for my work. (self employed, independent HUD REAC inspector).. I get all over. I will be up in Roanoke in the next couple of weeks, so we need to get up some time.. and a couple more weeks after that. I will likely be driving my 84 GL with 4 inch lift, 15 pug alloys with 205/75/15 all terrain tires on it, big ol' cargo rack, etc.. I was in Goldsboro about two weeks ago, and just this past week, I was in Raleigh, Greensboro, and Wilson (only 24 miles from you, Goldsboro guy). BTW, I live in Elizabeth City, NC, 40 miles south of Norfolk, VA. I just wanted to chime in, not to "hi-jack" your thread, but Welcome nonetheless, and look forward to hearing/seeing you. /mike Michael Dominesey mikldom@yahoo.com
  10. 84 GL 4x4 wagon, EA81 factory ac (although drained/disconnected) Ok, I have taken everything apart to get to all the connections that the cables attach too.. Lubed them all up, and still, they don't move freely with the cables alone . I have found an awesome 83 GL wagon in a boneyard that was well cared for with a reman'd engine in it no doubt, tho it is auto (I know the engine is reman'd, cause it is CLEAN, and the old engine was sitting in the back of the hatch.. the idiot took it to the junkyard, apparently, for blown axles. I have already raped the radio console, visors, calipers and rotors, drums and wheel cylinders, new alternator that was in it, wiper motor, etc.. the climate controls in there are in AWESOME shape, and move everything sweet. Can I just yank all the 'guts', cable, controls etc, without removing the dash, to transplant into mine? or do I have to yank the dash, the guages, the heater core, etc.? I have tried and tried with my controls, at the back, behind the defroster ducts, and I think they are bent, screwed or otherwise,, considering I found another set in great shape, I would like to go that route, if possible without too much trouble. LEMME KNOW!!! /mike Michael Dominesey mikldom@yahoo.com
  11. Helicoil back to the 10mm 1.25 pitch thread? Tap it to 3/8, maybe a little bigger and then put a 3/8 helicoil in it? I have had a hell of a time finding exhaust studs, so maybe just retapping the holes to a standard size, put common studs in there, and call it a day? The side that the threads are messed up on are holding, currently, but can't torque them too much, but the hold enough pressure to keep from backfiring, or echoing off the pavement, but this won't last. I plan on fixing this, this weekend, as well as installing the new tans mount I picked up and the steering gear boot I bought. BTW, The tranny from Joe up in Pottstown, PA i picked up a couple of weeks ago, is in the wagon, and performing FLAWLESSLY,,, THANKS JOE!! Let me know, I want to firm everything up! /mike mikldom@yahoo.com
  12. He's a 'big'un' now, a 7 year old at 80 lbs!! Since then, we have another one.. a 2 year old boy that is waay more active then the other one was.. My daughter from first marriage is now 14.. and I have her every weekend, and most days of the week too, when I am at home. Life is good.. love all 3 of my kids (I don't even think I am a grown up yet) Is their still an east coast sube get together? I would definately make the next one. yeah, look up that picture.. I rember your kids and wife have a good one!!! /mike
  13. forgot to call you, sorry, but I figured you keep an eye on the board, so you could tell whats up. I am actually gonna buy the extra engine/tranny combo from Joe in Jan, when I am back up here again.. I hope to have at least one spare tranny, and engine from now on.. I would not be suprised if I manage to get the tranny out of that ea81 4wd wagon in Greensboro, NC if I can. Thanks for everything!! You are a definate assett to the board.. and I hope you are able to salvage what you can from your friends junkyard.. just don't let him rip you off!!! You should ask for a donation from the board so you can get some stuff and store it if possible.. I would be willing to send you a couple of bux.. Thanks for everything!! /mike mikldom@yahoo.com
  14. No EA81's in Allentown Harry's I got my transmission from Joe in Minersville, but was still interesred. saw 4 early 90 legacy's, no peugot's for wheels. /mike
  15. Don't want to do a 5 speed, as I have a lift, and i have to put it in third a lot anyways.. if only there was a gear between 3 and 4th.. as I understand it.. the 5 speed is the exact same gearing with just a higher 5th gear. ok.. now, how about the place in pennsburg and allentown? I need one bad. /mike mikldom@yahoo.com
  16. I am gonna be up in Quakertown, PA, tomorrow night (Sunday, Nov. 4), doing a job in NJ on Monday, with the whole of Tuesday off.. Can somebody please let me know if their is a dual range tranny I can get out of an EA81 car? I will only have one day to grab one.. so I need advance notice, if at all possible. Can somebody PLEASE get to Harry's on Sunday or Monday, and let me know if they got one? or the boneyard in Pennsburg, or Allentown. I appreciate it!!! THANKS!! /mike Michael Dominesey mikldom@yahoo.com
  17. I am gonna be in Quakertown, PA sunday, doing a job in NJ on monday, have tuesday off, so I need to find a Dual Range tranny out of an EA81 car.. can somebody check Harry's in Hazleton, PA, or the other one in Pennsburg, and or Allentown, and report back? I only have one day to figure out what I am gonna do...and depending on things.. getting a tranny out of a car can be difficult. PLEASE, can somebody go look at Harry's tomorrow (Sunday or Monday), and let me know if they got one? I appreciate it!!! /mike Michael Dominesey mikldom@yahoo.com
  18. I was looking around in my shed, and it appears I got some brat seatbelts.. just lap belts I am gonna post in the sale section... let me know if you want them, and what you offer as I don't know the market for them. /mike Michael Dominesey mikldom@yahoo.com
  19. I have already straightened the bent wire up in there, but I cannot for the life of me force it to get into defrost mode!!! heat, bilevel, first level of ac, and now full ac works, but can't get it to go all the way to the defrost.. I have even taken a pair of pliers to tried to force that wire back into the sheeth, but to no avail.. how do if fix this.. I can go deeper to try to force the panel that moves around, I just don't want to take out the whole dash/heater core system. thanks! /mike Michael Dominesey mikldom@yahoo.com
  20. DUDE!!!! Funny, very funny Good thing I went and bought new punches... spent two hours, but I got the broken punch out, and the bad roll pin... I was hating it, but with patience.. I got it!!! Anyways... unhooked both half shafts on the front, car on jackstands, put the car in drive and let it idle ... the stub axles are turning, and you can hear it coming from inside the tranny at the stubs.. at idle speed, I can grab the stubs to make them alternate, and indeed, it is the tranny.. next question,,.... WHO CAN HELP ME GET AN EA81 DUAL RANGE TRANNY!!!? sorry about the yelling I just love my subie, spent a boat load of money in it lately, and shes out of commission.. my heart is broke Lemme me know!!! /mike Michael Dominesey mikldom@yahoo.com
  21. Nope.. Still there,.. Tho, the passenger side axle was messed up anyways.. not the races or the internals, but it was punched through on the tranny side of the axle.. I am 60 dollar poorer and still have the same problem. new problem.. My punch broke while trying to get the pin through.. how do I drill the pin out? how has others done this? thanks. /mike
  22. EA81 Dual Range Tranny, 4 inch lift, 15 inch pug alloys with 205/75/15 all terrain tires on it..... I Believe my tranny puked.. Well it shifts and runs great, but I am thinking the front Differential, the gearing to the stub axles just died.. Only on power to the tranny (meaning put your foot on the clutch), their is a constant sound.. not really a grind but a constant bumping/thumping sound.. goes away when you push the clutch in. but if you put your hand on the gear shift and move it around, you can feel it in the gear shift, even if the clutch is pushed down, but you can no longer hear it. Axle on the pass side was real hot, and I saw what looked like oil on the main housing.. I am thinking just the differential in the tranny went out.. can these be replaced? have to crack the tranny open.. but probably much easier to find a replacement dual range tranny? somebody give me some advice.. I have swapped a tranny before on my older brat (the infamous Bushbrat that Raven in FL has now), but I need a good dual range tranny.... push me in the right direction!! thanks!!! /mike Michael Dominesey mikldom@yahoo.com
  23. That page is awesome.. Indeed the quality of the 6 inch kit is great. is there a 3 or 4 inch offered from these guys? I had a 6 before, and it was nice, but I don't need that for a family beeter. I want nice on-road and good off road performance. Thanks. Mike
  24. Small Rust issue, (Very Small, but significant) on the 85 GL I saw it, haven't test drove it yet. The inside is about immaculant. It definately is a 5 speed with the dual range, in fact it is exact to the 3 dr coupe I had, even the color. The rust is on the bottom of the fender on the passenger side. It does not look like it has affected the rocker panel, but the bottom of the fender is practically gone. I can muster a good sheet metal repair, but it is troubling. I plan on going under it this afternoon, and poking around with a stick at the usual places, the frame rail areas (I know no frame but the supports), the floor boards, around the gas tank, etc. I think if it drives well, and everything seems good other than that rust, I will offer him like 700 for it.. not worth 850 with that kind of rust repair that is needed. I am not gonna go look at the gl10, simply because of the original automatice transmission in there. I don't trust them well enough. I can swap a manual transmission, as I did it in the brat, over two weekends. Some more opinions? THANKS in advance!!! Sincerely, Mike mikldom@yahoo.com
  25. Still would like the question answered and some more opinions. focus the thread to the question.. I appreciate the one un-biased response... some more please? Thanks! Sincerely, Mike mikldom@yahoo.com
