  1. well my 94 legacy has been having a major problem. its become way hard to start and sometimes it wont start at all. sometimes when its running it will run fine but usually it does a lot of sputtering and stuff. while sputtering if i let it idle it will die instantly. so i have to keep giving it gas and it seems like it lags when it revs. kinda stumped on this one. gas is ok as far as i know since its been doing this and ive had different gas in it. everything looks normal. the only clue i have is that i get this really wierd smell when it start getting the power loss. smells kind of like antifreeze really. but i dont believe i have a HG issue. possible since the HG was done a few hundred miles ago but i dont believe so since my oil looks ok (except its gotten dirty really really fast since i did work on the engine and put new oil in it and all that). i havent noticed any loss in fluid in my radiator. the exhaust is a light blue color. subaru for ya. so im kind of stumped. i might start it up and drive 5-10 miles with it behaving fine or i can start it up and it runs like hell from the get go. ive had this car for 2 years and ive had nothing but one problem after another. just need it to keep running for the moment but when i take it to the crusher i definitely wont be sorry to see this subie go.
  2. if its happening while braking then i would say you have a warped rotor or 2 up front.
  3. i appreciate the help with everything. been busy and havent been able to trace down the problem yet. kinda worried about my front right wheel. the top of it is to far in towards the car and the bottom to far out. somethings broken or bent but im not sure what.
  4. first off guys its a manual tranny. figured you would know since well... never heard of anyone roll starting a automatic. and thanks for any stuff to look at. maybe i can figure something out. the wire they crossed was the power wire for the head unit. it was simply a wire ran directly from my battery to my radio. i had gotten a inline fuse but hadnt had time to put it in. and ya fairtax im confused too. i get a code 12. i can roll start my car or i can run a hot wire from battery to starter and start my car, but when i turn the key from on to start nothing happens.
  5. just so you know an HLA is the subaru counterpart of a lifter btw rattles are no new thing. mine rattles so much i call it the rattler
  6. who needs 4th gear when ya got 3rd the lights havent come back on. i cleaned the alternator connections since i could at least do that easily. havent had any problems with that. im still going to check the output next time i go by an autoparts store.
  7. ya a knock sensor will make it run like hell. puting my engine back in my car the knocksensor wire got messed up and it ran but ran with no performance at all. so a new knocksensor should help
  8. what kind of car do you have? ive been the worst at not supplying that info if its anything like my ej22 then you can turn the crank by putting a ratchet on the main crank bolt and turning it. you shouldnt be able to turn it by hand alone. and if you get a constant clicking sound when trying to start you probably dont have good battery terminal connections. good luck
  9. any scans would be useful. of course the hard part is when ya get to the car and your like not sure lol. but from what it looks like they tried doing something to the ignition (sticking something in it?) to start it and the car said FU and shut the ignition switch off. i dont know. next step is to look for fuzible links.
  10. if you have bad vibrations when you brake then you might possibly have a warped rotor(s). as for the tick it might possibly be one of your hydraulic lash adjusters. and oil leak... well anyone with a subie gets used to it after a while. just find out where its coming from (if its a leak or if its burning it) and keep an eye on it.
  11. where is the fuzable link at? and ya they got everything except the little bit of stuff in my glovebox
  12. alright just went and started it with a peice of stereo wire they left me. bastards didnt leave my antenna wire. of all the nerve. so we know my starter works! its just in the starter switch. not sure how to fix that.
  13. so take that little tab plug off the starter thats running from the cab to the starter then run a wire from the hot part of the battery to the little plug?
  14. looked underneath and found the 5 or so bundles of wires. all of them look ok. found the connector on that side too. john where would these fusible links be? i just cant imagine whats wrong. everything looks normal. battery has charge. when i turn the key all the dash lights come on and i hear little clicks. when i turn it to start it just does nothing. absolutely nothing.
  15. the dash looks fine to me. i dont have an immobilizer. i still have lights and everything i just cant turn the key and start it. looked over my engine and didnt really find anything out of place. im stumped. oh ya i remember seeing a engine code 12 on the way home.
  16. last night i had a flat. to make it worse it was not one but two flats so i couldnt just throw a donut on and away i go. to make a long story short i walked like 7 miles. got some help from a friend. came back and someone had stolen everything from my car. they took my system out. i had it ran directly to the battery and they took the power wire and crossed the hot and ground and taped it. so im pissed. and it gets worse. i get tires on it and try starting it. it wont start at all. got plenty of battery energy. windows go up and down real easy. dash lights are bright. but its like im not getting anything through the starter. ended up rolling it off. got home and checked fuses and stuff. no bad fuses. been a really bad day. 500 dollars of audio equipment. flat tires, the 400 dollars in tools. so anyone have any ideas on why i cant crank er up? btw i just removed my power wire for the radio to begin with. edit-94 legacy is what ive got
  17. 94 legacy. i noticed today something really weird. on the way to work when i would go around curves and when i would apply throttle coming out of a turn i would get a lot of lag time before any power would happen (manual tranny btw). figuring it might be because i was low on gas i got some after work. on the way home with half a tank of fuel i noticed that i only had the loss of power going around left hand turns. kinda strange but i figure somebody might know something about this.
  18. ya sounds like the timing is off. as far as i remember the white marks are incorrect for marking your timing. im sure you could do a search and find how to tweak the timing in some thread around here.
  19. i have an ej22 as well. it takes something like 4.6 quarts. just pour in 4 quarts and then slowly fill with the last quart till you get where you need to be. basicaly takes like 4 quarts for the engine and some extra for the filter and all that.
