  1. The Justy has a rear e-brake (That gets well used I might add, ) I feel sorry for all you EA drivers!
  2. If you swap distys for some reason (I did but I can't remember why) and it won't run after you do the whole top-dead-center thing with the flywheel marks, you might have the disty 180 degrees off. I just remember running into that problem. Everything else was fine. Also, use a engine balancer if you hoist it, or at the very least, use two chains (think upside down 'V') and hook on the hook at the front, and the hook-ish piece of metal on the bellhousing. I didn't realize this my first engine swap, and it was a bitch getting it out with it hanging ~60 degrees off center. Putting the new one in, you may have problems getting the transmission and engine to align. An engine leveler really helps here. Otherwise, just keep trying different angles, lifting the tranny up higher, that kind of stuff. Eventually they just sort of fit together leaving you wondering what you did different. Good luck!
  3. I'm not looking to completely swap transmissions (yet ) but somehow adapt the limited slip coupling to my 4wd system, making it fulltime or all wheel drive. If I had the money and a little more in the engineering department, I would love to take a transverse mounted nissan or mitsubishi AWD system and make it fit in the justy. But if I could afford that, I'd probably just end up buying an impreza
  4. Tried to start again but the wheels didn't even spin. As one of the guys I was blocking told me the chasis/differential was suspended and could not transfer power to the wheels. Is it just the fact that it's about 5AM and I need sleep or does something not sound right there? How could being high centered stop the wheels from spinning?
  5. I just had a crazy low cost keep it simple idea for my Justy to convert it from 4wd to AWD. I was reading about different AWD systems focusing on the center diff, and found out that sometimes a coupling, either viscous or clutch based, is used to transfer power to the rear wheels. They went on to say that the following cars have something like this: Some subarus with automatic transmissions The upcoming Audi TT Quattro The Japan-only Nissan Pulsar GTi-R The old Honda Real-Time 4-wheel drive wagons Honda CR-V Nissan Skyline GT-R Porsche Carrera 4 and 95 VW Synchros I'm guessing most of the couplings are built into the tranny housing, but I am wondering if anybody knows of one that is seperate, maybe a little easier to custom fit into the justy... Just open thinking here I guess, maybe I will go to the JY and poke my head under some hondas and vw's.... -- Jeff
  6. Yep, I'm addicted. I'd say the early subes certainly held their own today. And that baja, wow! I can't say I don't like 'em anymore And whoever said they don't like Volvos, they should know that a volvo drain plug saved my rump roast today when my oil cap mysteriously didn't come along this morning for the 45 minute drive to Pacific Raceways. Thanks Matt! I will post my pictures up later, I didn't really get any of the open class since I was too busy riding shotgun in the other cars. Anyway, outstanding performances by everybody from the board!! See you all at the next one -- Jeff
  7. Tech Times: 8:00 am (Production, Production GT, Group 2) 12:00 noon (Group 5, Open, Truck/SUV) Sessions: 9:00 AM (Production, Production GT, Group 2) 1:00 PM (Group 5, Open, Truck/SUV) Since my justy fits into the production class, does this mean I have to run in the morning? I was under the impression most of us are running in production or production GT... If so why are we arriving at 10:30? -- Jeff
  8. Hmm this rallyx is news to me, but I did say this is the year I will get into it. Tentatively count me and my Justy in :D -- Jeff
  9. Hmm just found out with 4 days to go... This would be my first time.... Let me go ask the Justy and see what it thinks -- Jeff
  10. I heard of an official Justy STI, and somewhere I thought I read that they had turbojustys in japan... Anybody know? Also, what are the rules as far as boring the cylinders making a little more displacement? That and the typical port & polish. Speaking of P&P, does anybody with more experience have an idea of how much it might add to the HP? -- Jeff
  11. Heh, the other guy's trailer hitch saved my rump roast once. I was at a stop sign I had been to many many times. You are merging onto another street, with traffic that doesn't have to stop. The thing is the traffic comes from almost behind you so you have to look way back. The only car coming is far enough back that I decided to go. In one move as I was looking at the car, I started to roll forward, move my head to look forward, and hit the gas. By the time I saw the brand new toyota tacoma still in front of me who was still waiting for god knows what; I rear ended him at 6 or 7 mph. First accident, I'm a little freaked and we pull over get out and look. His car is spotless, I have a bent to **** front bumper (89 chev. S-10) He looks at his car obviously pissed, and finds nothing wrong with it since I hit his trailer hitch. I asked him if he wanted to trade insurance and he said, nope there's nothin wrong with my car, and he took off. I looked at my car and the bent bumper just sort of matched the rusty bed, missing tailgate, and scratched body... so I drove home
  12. Anybody know where (if any) the good big open parking lots, abandoned airstrips, etc... are near seattle or woodinville? I plan on going up to the markworth forrest service roads in duvall to practice some gravel driving, but I still wouldn't mind a good wet parking lot to practice sliding around but don't want to risk the ticket. -- Jeff
  13. As soon as I find another daily driver & sell my lifted sube, my Justy will hit the garage and I can start trying my hand at rallycross. I'm trying to decide what to do enginewise... It seems that according to the adjusted engine displacement, a turbo'd 4x4 justy would end up in the production GT class. I wonder if it would be better to just build up the engine just to stay in the production class. Any thoughts here? -- Jeff
  14. Oh man if anybody hasn't seen the videos yet.... WATCH THEM! I about laughed my rump roast right out of the house. I can only imagine it... "Hey here's this really really steep long hill that I am sure to slide out of control on... lets see if I can pilot my sube down without killing myself!" LMAO!! Driver... You have some BALLS Or the 'sprung' series... I hear the car, it's getting louder but WTF is it?? Then it launches into the picture. Seriously funny **** here. IMO, these are the best: http://www.haltdeinmaul.de/dirk/neu20030818/Sprung2.AVI http://www.haltdeinmaul.de/dirk/neu20030818/Sprung1.AVI http://www.haltdeinmaul.de/dirk/video/Hammerhang2.AVI http://www.haltdeinmaul.de/dirk/video/Matsch%20fun11.AVI http://www.haltdeinmaul.de/dirk/video/Matsch%20fun3.AVI http://www.haltdeinmaul.de/dirk/neu20030727/Steilhang1.AVI
  15. Man I have been itching for pictures ever since I saw the username rallyjusty! Hurry up dammit!! :D Seriously, I can't wait to sell my hatch so I can buy another daily driver and retire my Justy to the garage (where the fun starts )
  16. First thing... this is amazing. I have always wanted to see a EJ swap into a Justy. I have been planning to do it to my Justy in a year or so, after taking some more metal work and machining classes. What kind of clearance issues have you run into engine and tranny wise. Did you have to modify any of the original frame under the hood? How about fitting the transmission under the body? I always figured one would have to cut out part of the floor for the tranny to fit. How about steering? I always pictured using an EJ crossmember and using the steering box on that. Man you make me want to take a trip to Colorado now. I hear the snowboarding's pretty good there... hmmm Lastly, I know everybody has been asking, but we're all dying for pictures. How about I send you a disposable camera for you to fill up and send back to me :D I'd scan and post them for you. Good luck man, -- Jeff
  17. It was born in 81 but pretty much the body is the only thing still stock. The engine, flywheel, clutch, and transmission are all 83. None of that 7 7/8" clutch here. -- Jeff
  18. EA-81 here: I replaced my clutch with my engine swap last spring. It always had a bad shudder so I finally got around to trading it in under warantee at schmucks. Also picked up a refurbed flywheel. Popped all of the above in and now it slips bad. I even adjusted my linkage to the point where I have about 2 inches of freeplay before I start to feel resistance. As soon as I even touch that resistance, it is basically disengaged. I am thinking I got a bum pressure plate. Any ideas? -- Jeff
  19. Would you say that the mileage where it starts leaking is affected by driving style and basic car maintenance? I looked at several cars with higher miles than 111k and they weren't nearly as bad. I mean from the cat back, the exhaust pipes were black. Everything else was soaked. I couldn't imagine most subes of that mileage look like that. -- Jeff
  20. I am tentativley buying a 96 AWD 5spd Impreza with apparant "oil leaks." I am concerned since it has only 111k and I wonder what lack of preventative maintenance has caused both engine and transmission oil leaks. Also worried what else could show up down the line. Other half of this post is repair. I consider myself reasonably mechanically inclined, with most of my skills being on early 80's series subes. I have replaced virtually everything on an 83 sube, but have not done any engine dissasembly past intake manifold. I have the tools though. Not knowing much about the EJ22, what is the most common oil leak, and does it sound like a job that a mechanic of my caliber could handle? Thanks, -- Jeff
  21. That's a possibility... It looked identical. Are the connections the same? -- Jeff
  22. I would but the positive post on it disintegrated when i tried to take off the nuts (the whole thing was rusted and corroded so I cut the original wire off and crimped on a new connector) I am going to try to solder on a new wire that just uses those quick connects tomorrow. -- Jeff
  23. I just pulled my engine to do a clutch job and put on a new alternator someone gave me. After I put it back in and had the engine running, I tried to turn it off and it just kept humming along. I also noticed my battery light was on, and the dash looked like it does when the key is in start with the engine off. It also stayed lit up when I moved the key to acc or off. Any suggestions? This is an 81 hatchback GL. -- Jeff
  24. I have this crazy idea to find a 97 -99 legacy sedan gt with a blown headgasket, buy it for cheap, and fix it myself to save money and have a fun project. Has anybody else had the same experience? I also have no idea where I would have the best chances of finding one. Any ideas there? Thanks, -- Jeff
  25. Thanks Tom, I laid a shop towel over it to control the blast area and it worked great. I did however manage to get a glob of axle grease in my eye from one of the hammer blows. This was with a shop towel over it, so for anyone else attempting this, wear safety glasses!! It did wash out safely although I was a little freaked out at the time. -- Jeff
