  1. Welcome to the board Ray, there are a good bunch of guys here and you can learn a lot from them. Your model Justy looks unique to Europe to me, I havn't seen one in Oz and we get most Subaru Models, whats the engine specs? Lots of Maltese people in Tasmania, I got a great welcome when people found out. We arrived the day of the Monaco Grand Prix, could not work out where everyone was... streets were dead, everything closed. We had to actually ask a family when walking around, they invited us in to watch it and we ended up having a blast of a time I loved Valletta, I was engineering on a yacht and we sailed into the harbour after coming through the Suez Canal. Amazing Harbour. You are right about the Minis, I love them and spotted a few old coopers. My advice for your Car is go the braces and sway bar the front and back, Do what ever you have to do to dial in some negative camber in the front end. (I love the bendy roads) Upgrade your brakes Then deal with the airflow in and out of your engine. Give it more fuel when it asks! Cheers, Matt
  2. Malta is a little island in the Mediterranean Sea between North Africa and Italy. I was there in 1997 and again in 2002, It used to be a British Colony and has the wildest collection of old English cars and grey performance imports from Europe. Both left and right hand drives, All screaming around a very small island on neck tie thin roads! I loved it! People tend to keep the old cars on the road by actually fixing them or swapping a newer drivetrain in, its inspiring to see a 1955 Morris Minor with a new direct injection Renault diesel in it (7000% torque upgrade). Very friendly people, perfect weather and I highly reccommend going there. Matt
  3. 2 x clevis forks from an agricultural supply store (or a mate, thanks Ray), 950mm long piece of steel rod, threaded to 18mm x 1.25 2 x steel tabs welded to the strut top plate for lift kit. 2 x lock nuts $60 Australian, $45 US Twin carbs not included. MASSIVE DIFFERENCE, didn't know it flexed that much!
  4. Ok guys, I have been reading the posts concerning electric superchargers, I know the how the convensional superchearging and turbocharging systems, how about the unconvensional??? Has anyone tried connecting a dive bottle full of plain old air, (free and available everywhere) through a 1st and possibly a regulated 2nd stage and plumbed into the throttle body or carb with solinoid controllers??? Only for wide open throttle obviously, fuel mixture can be sorted... why not Come on guys..... And then there is the gas powered leaf blower idea.... Anyone tried this?
  5. Eureka, he cried.Archamedes please explain how this has been done, Sounds like a fine accesory to the jet boat (no gear shifting and tuning on the run is possible) Dual cables and a big fuel mixture knob all calibrated together?? That would be a BAD BOY of a boat motor! Then kill this electric supercharger S..t, Power does not magically appear or materialize from nowhere, There are some guilible people unfortunatly.
  6. G'day Doc, the Berkley and Hamilton drives are very similar, they do drop a fair bit of efficiency compared to some of the newer nozzle designs. What the hell - I will feed it more fuel and compress it! I am prepared to be flexable with the first protype, we will set a HP figure that is obtainable all day, every day, in all condiotions, with total reliability (SUBARU RELIABILITY). We think 90 horsepower is achievable at the spot where the flywheel would normally be. Then adjust the impellor pitch to suit load and speed requirements for the new hull later. 210 kg hull weight minimum payload 480 kg 200kg for EA81, jet, shaft, steering, winch, 150 kg for two average sized blokes 80 kg (80 litres) fuel (lots) 40 kg Fishing gear, at least one dog, beer, swags etc Should come in at under 700 kg, wet!
  7. Try this. http://www.aquajet.co.nz/home.htm No intercooler plans atm, simple as possible. No electronics either. pushrods, carb, light and indestructable. We are planning some big upriver trips and want to be able to hand winch it up and over the rough stuff (waterfalls etc). The Wonder Brumby has to be able to tow it as well. BTW a holden 179 is an old GM straight six (not a bad one either, just too tall, long and made of the wrong metal). circa 1963-1967. I have a busy summer planned now!
  8. Years of planning and scribbling on beer coasters have come together! Requirements: Shallow draught (less than 4 inches planing) 14 foot hull, motorcycle steering with thumb throttle (ala 4 wheeler) Subie power connected to a single stage waterjet unit similar to this- http://www.aquajet.co.nz/unit.htm. But being the purist backyarder, and the fact that I love to MAKE much more than SPEND I have had the win of all wins! An old mate of my Dads has just let me know of an old jet boat project he will pass on to me if I want, he hasn't touched it for 14 years and it is dry and safe in the back of a farm shed. He has built a 16 foot plywood punt to save his sheep when it floods, and was planning to bolt up this Hamilton jet unit and a holden 179 to it. I will fit the jet to the hull temorarily for the summer while I get a local firm to make me a new custom polythene hull. They make heaps of them in Tassie for the salmon farmers and even the Cops have a couple, they are indestructable. http://www.plasticfab.com.au/flash/blank.htm Run them over rocks, sand, hell break them (if you can) and the pieces float. And of course there will be blurring pushrods. The mark 1 Wonder Brumby motor is being hybridized into the power plant. EA81, heaps of Kms on it, weber, wet exhaust (ally irrigation pipe with injection). I am fitting 82T pistons and the turbo with weber if I can water cool the down pipe and jacket the rest. No rules on the water, No speed cameras, no rego permits, No illegal mods regulations, No one will be going through water as shallow as me!
  9. Hey DJBob, is that Autocraft in Collins street? They used to be up in West Hobart didn't they, alfa and lancia lovers. I really need some specialist help with my twin carby set up. If they are good I will give them a try, Barry Cooper charged me $155 to tell me I had a split diaphram in my vacuum advance (which they didn't fix ) and to adjust my tappets, I could have done that in 15 minutes!! I don't think they even touched my carbs. I drove for three hours for that! S..ts me no end! If you cannot plug the magic computer into a car these days, the highly paid mechanics look blankly at you, I knew what was wrong and even told him, but my car came back running worse. Sorry to vent. TB
  10. DJBob, Steve @ Rising Sun Automotive in Adelaide has done this, on LPG I beleive. He is a really nice bloke, I have spoken to him a few weeks ago. Here is a link: http://www.ausubaru.com/ausubaru/html/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1161 Nice to see another Taswegian on the board, I am in Swansea but hit Hobart every week, Keep an eye out for the lifted white LOUD Brumby. Cheers Matt
  11. I do, our roads are like 20 grit sandpaper and twisty as hell.I flogged the outside edges of tires until finallly getting negative camber
  12. Why don't you bolt on ea82 lower control arms and cv shafts, then fab up some longer castor rods. Voila - castor is way better, and neg camber all for $160 (oz). It really is an agressive front end set up when dialed in correctly. TB
  13. I agree, the new gaskets have small holes in some of the journals, it must be to slow the coolant flow to allow heat to transfer better. Excellent advice guys. Thank you all. What did we ever do without the internet?? Make all these mistakes once each....
  14. Guys, I must be doing someting wrong here. I am putting the two halves of an EA81 together and the crank spins nice and smooth until I start torquing up the bolts. even at the 2nd last round of nips the crank won't turn. Is it possible the bearings are slightly too tight around the crank. I have backed off all the bolts and the case is still tight together, and now the crank turns. Is there a trick, I am going in the correct order.... I have had it apart twice now to check, Its starting to s..t me, I thought I would have a coffee and ask you guys. Any suggestions? Cheers
  15. Thanks RallyRuss, thats one vote each way now...I really need a confirming Vote. Thats view is from my Verandah (porch for you Seppo's), it is Great Oyster Bay on Tasmania's East Coast. Full of fish and Crayfish. Everyone is welcome. :)
  16. Machine shop...surface levelling grind. It seems they were a little busy to clean my valves and dip clean the heads. Service is a thing of the past. So is pride in work. I would NEVER send out a head with grease still stuck to it. So I would not reccommend anyone sending their heads to Hobart, Tasmania to get re-co'd As if anyone would!
  17. When I had a look a the old head gasket which came with my motor, the outer two cooling journals on each end of each head gasket were not cut out. Even though there are holes in both the heads and the engine body to correspond. The pressure has actually blown through the gaskets in 7 out of the 8 spots. My question is.. The engine is a dual port, do normal EA81's have these outer holes?? Should I cut holes in my new head gaskets if they arrive tommorrow without holes? I am in a tight spot here. Any suggestions gentlemen?? BTW Check out those Valves....
  18. Dante, I am having them custom made in Hobart, Tasmania. Easier that way. I know in my mind what I want and how it should sound, its just bending that into pipes thats the hard bit. I will post photos and measurements if you like. Cheers, Matty B (tasbrat)
  19. I have just ordered a set of custom 4 in to 1 headers for this motor, going 2 1/4 inch after the collector all the way back. Yes it has dual exhaust ports, single inlet. The crank and cam have been balanced, The heads are going to the shop next week for a good check and polish up a valve size possibly, new pistons /rings and new bearings and seals should give me 130hp with good pipes. electronic dizzy, Ceramic clutch, HD pressure plate, AWD is going to be vital now! Pictures coming...
  20. Thanks I will give it a go, I was hoping someone here may have worked on one. Generaldisorder will know if anyone does.
  21. G'day everyone, I have found a 120hp version of a dual port, dual carb EA81, a factory competition motor with some attitude It needs a rebuild and I am wondering what bits from a normal EA81 rebuild kit will fit? seals, rocker gaskets, piston rings, bearings etc. I am assuming head gaskets will be diffferent, any ideas on where to get parts online.. This is going to make the Wonder Brumby unstoppable, and normally aspirated! Framerails and xmember intact, all legal, I think I am growing up........ NAAAAAH!
  22. Well done Oddcomp! Fanatastic stubborn attitude wins again over mere steel, sparks and those pesky 0s and 1s. Please give us an update after hardcore testing. I bet the General is trying to figure how to put this all on an EA81. Fuel delivery...hmmm Best of luck with it.
