sube4x4 replied to ninefourteener's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's

Having some bearing problems
sube4x4 replied to Soobinator's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Perfectly stated GD. I have installed the sealed bearings and the shielded bearings. I've had the best luck with the shielded one's. The sealed bearings rubber seal always seams to break down, chewed up, melted some how... The shielded are steel covers on either side. I have not yet had a problem with these. But remember shielded doesn't mean sealed. -cody -
I have a 1980 hatch with EA71 and i've been having trouble sometimes with keeping it running. Most of the time everything is perfectly fine. But sometimes when i start it the battery light and door lights etc stay on for awhile then clear and it'll run fine. But when they don't it'll die in about 30 seconds. I recently replaced the ignition switch because i found that the only time the fuel pump would pump was when the key was turned to the start position then would stop once clicked back to the run position. Could this problem be my alternator slowly dieing on me? I'm out of ideas. Thanks for any help. -cody

I was told that the timing belts had just been done when I purchased this car. I believe the guy still however, I think thats all he replaced. The right side tensioner is to blame for this. The bearing seized up and melted the belt. I did not here anything come from the engine that sounded fatal but i'm not sure if you would?? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400077536007&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT This is the kit I ordered. Has anyone ordered from them? If so how's the quality? Thanks for any input. -cody

Is there supposed to be a fourth link on the left side? Seems like there should be to me... thanks for any help -cody

I was driving to Longbeach today and as I pulled up to a stop light the engine promptly shut off. I pulled off to the side of the road and and went straight for the coil. I had my girlfriend crank the motor as i held the coil wire just off the coil to check for spark. No spark. So I got the multimeter out and started testing. I measured roughly 10 volts at the negative terminal of the coil and at the positive terminal. I then measured the output where the coil wire plugs into the coil and measured about 2.2 volts. Then I measured the resistance across the coil and got the suspected 1.3-1.4 ohms. I then checked the fuse box and found no blown fuses. So i've come to the conclusion that the problem is before the coil in the ignition system. I'm not sure where to check? The ignition switch maybe? Any help is greatly appreciated!! -cody

I've been searching around on here for awhile but can't seem to find the answer i'm looking for. I'm gathering parts for an EJ swap into my 86' loyale. I picked up up a turbo 89' loyale today for some various parts. I know i'll need the FI fuel pump from the 89' but will I need the fuel lines too? Is anyone running the stock carb fuel lines with an EJ? Should I just buy all new fuel line? Thanks for any help. -cody

Have you personally been to any of these trails? I'm used to muddy trails and deep ruts in dense forest. It sounds like we may be doing some wheeling in the coming days. -cody

stripped axle hub or busted tranny?
sube4x4 replied to DaveAP's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Like GD said and also try grabing the upper cup and pulling up and down on it. Just before my last transmission blew the output stubs had an extreme amount of play in them. Just my 2cents Good Luck -cody -
I've heard some mentioning of "exit 38" around here and was curious to know if this was exit 38 on I90? I was heading over to Cle Elum to view a house to move into and we were driving across I90 and I saw exit 38 one mile. Its roughly 50 miles from a house I may be moving into. So some clearification would be extremely appreciated. Maybe even tell me a couple things about exit 38? I've sold my hardcore wheelers that were covered in dents but i don't mind doing a little wheeling in my newer subaru. thanks all:) -cody

Yes, however it will also make it harder. This is the method used to make swords a long time ago. Hard=brittle and less malluable. Vise-Versa. Being an experienced TIG welder. If it were say 304 stainless it wouldn't make a difference. Good Luck and don't blow your self up. -cody

I'm moving to the Cle Elum area in a couple weeks from the Portland area and was wondering who lives near Cle Elum? Say, within 100 miles. -Cody

broke rear diff stub bolt
sube4x4 replied to NinjaTech's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You said you had access to a TIG welder? Just weld something onto the broken stub. Such as a piece of bar stock or some scrap. -cody -
Oil Sending Unit relocation
sube4x4 replied to sube4x4's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I saw this picture a long time ago and was going to do this to my last subaru (2nd GEN) but then i sold it before i did. The 3rd GEN doesn't have that convenient ground strap bolt there dang it! -cody Yes, it is grounded to the bracket i attached it to. Tomorrow I will try grounding it with a wire to the engine as i have it grounded to the body now. Maybe a bad engine to body grounding strap? Do you think maybe if i have it mounted upside down to what McBrat has shown in his picture could be the problem? Mine is opposite of his. I wouldn't think it would affect it as it is pressurized. -cody -
I'm relocating my sending unit on my 86' loyale and i'm having trouble getting it to read any pressure on the gauge. I started the car and loosened the fitting closest to the sending unit and bled all the air out of the line and i still can't get any pressure to the gauge. I measured wire to the sending unit and it had voltage. Also my oil line is about 48 inches long. Could the extreme length be the problem? And help will be greatly appreciated. -cody

Anybody going to be out there this weekend? -cody

It also depends on what Gen brat you have.... Theres a big difference in the wheel well size between the first and second gen brats. -cody
-
I'm out. I'm in the middle of building some bumpers and rebuilding a winch. -cody
-
Just start the car and let it idle and start pulling lines. You'll find out which ones are important! -cody

Sounds good to me! Count me in. -cody

I thought it was you. And we'll have to plan a day for some wheelin. I get out of school in vancouver around 2:30 monday through friday. And were from the st.helens area. Deer Island to be exact. We'll have to go out to jones beach one of these days. Its towards longview(about 50min from portland) Its a small sand area but fresh water so you won't rust away! lol We try to get down to sand lake once a month or so. A club sounds cool to me. I'm sure my buddy would want in on it. Were planning on takin his four inch lift off and doing an eight inch lift so he can clear some 28".

Exactly what GD said. I've got swampers i only run when i'm going wheeling other than that they just sit in a stack. Not to mention the horrible gas milleage they'll give you. My DD tires are BFG AT's they do good on ice and sand. Also some drier trails they'll do pretty good. Just my 2cents. O ya i fit 29" swampers on a 1980 hatch with zero lift  It was cheap n' easy. -cody

Just playin around out on some logging roads near my house. -cody
