  1. What is the use of the scoop on the 96-99 Outbacks? It doesn't feed anywhere near the intake.
  2. I have a 2.5L in mine and it is very good. At around 70,000 miles or so I had to get the 5 cam seals replaced cause they were shot. Got the timing belt replaced at the same time. Only cost $500 at a place that works on only Subarus and Volvos. It makes some odd ticking noise when it's cold, but they said it's nothing to worry about. My $.02
  3. Ooohhhhh, ok. I get it now. So I guess I shouldn't be taking my car on Jeep trails and stuff. Well, oh well. I'm still gonna, hehe. Now to lift it and get some meatier tires.
  4. So is our awd useless then? I'm all confused. I get around no problem in snow and mud and stuff.

    gnarly subaru

I found that the other day too. I typed in "Subaru 4x4" on Google image search. That pic is now my on my desktop.
  6. Hm, I didn't have any problems this winter. I run all season tires. Some times two tires would start spinning, but then the other two kicked in and all was good.
  7. Oh, my bad. Hard to tell in the pic. I guess all the Legacys do huh.
  8. I was talking to a customer at work the other day that had the same car I do, except 1 year older. I see that a lot in WI though. Anyway I asked what year it was and she said a 97 or 98, it was her second one because the first got totalled. Hit and run outside of Chi-town, her Legacy Outback wagon flipped and rolled 4 times. She broke her collar bone and her sister walked away totally unharmed. I think I'll be keeping my 99 OBW for a long time.
  9. I don't have the url, but Holden also makes a cruck like that.
  10. How about a lift kit for a 99 Outback wagon? They seem to be a bit different than the Brat.
  11. The way I fixed mine was simple: 1. Go play offroad somewhere. 2. Hit a big hole too fast and break both of the stock ones. 3. Cry when you hear the price of new ones. 4. Go to Auto Zone and buy some for trucks and put them in the holes. 5. Be happy. They run if the car is on or off, with or with out the regular lights on, so becareful not to leave them on or you might need a jump. They don't look oem, but they don't look ghetto either.
  12. I just moved up here from STL and now don't know of any places to go play in the mud. I see a ton of 96-99 Outbacks here so I'm sure someone knows where to play. There is even an older 4WD 3 door I see around. My car is missing being muddy and I feel I am neglecting it, lol. Thanks and have a great day. Geoff
  13. I love my Outback. Offroad and on. I had to get the cam seals replaced and they did the timing belt at the same time, it was only $500 so I wasn't too worried, no problems now. I does ride very smooth and even is good at hauling hundreds of pounds of stuff from St. Louis to Madison with no problems. My $.02
  14. Does anyone make one? Haynes goes to 1998, I thought the 1996-1999 were all the same. I'm all confused.
  15. I live in St. Louis now, but will be moving to Madison in the middle of next month. I have some friends that live in Marshfield, I think it's 2 hours south of you.
  16. I get about 21 on average with my 2.5L automatic around town. Driving to Madison and back I get about 25, but hopefully that will go up since I just had a lot of stuff replaced in the engine.
  17. I got my car back today after having all 5 cam seal/bushing things replaced, the cam cover seal and the timing belt replaced. Total cost, $450. I am a happy man.
  18. Mine does this. I went to Madison last weekend from St. Louis with a detour through Chicago on my way home, about 1200 miles roundtrip, and it used about 2 quarts of oil. There was a film of oil on the rear of the car too. Whenever I stop it smokes like a concert goer at a Cypress Hill concert. It is worse the longer I drive and faster. Tuesday it will be going in to be looked at, hopefully not costing $4000.
  19. Well after my drive to work all is good I was thinking, I've done some muddin' through some big mud puddles on my way home at times, that probably didn't help any.
  20. How about a 2000+ Outback Vs. a 96-99 Outback? Do they have the same bolt pattern and offset? I like those wheels more than my 15" 6 spoke.
  21. I put new rotors tonight so I'll find out in the morning if all is good and well. Thanks for the tips!
