  1. The best way to fix ANY power problem is to add MOAR BOOST!!!! ...sorry. Old habbits. Other than that, a good tune up, cleaning, and proper maintenance Are the best, cheapest, and most beneficial ways to make power. Beyond that.... a cam, port and polish, and an ECU tune can do wonders. On the issue of transmissions, if the nanny shifter wasn't such a whore, I wouldn't mind having an auto. But as it stands now, with all the high mileage slippage, torque converter failure, AWD solenoid failure, and general weaksauceness, I REALLY agree with the 5 speed swap.
  2. I can verify that sti struts will fit into a '95 lego without mods. It lowered my car about 1.5 inches and drastically improved the handling characteristics of the car even though it is a wagon. Anyways, I've noticed that Subaru has a habit of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
  3. I know.... Been a while since I posted. I ripped the rack out of the car last week. Had to take off the header, misc random crap and swaybar to even begin. Are we all ready for disappointment? The inners and outers were both good. The inners wouldn't unscrew from the outers, so I tried hitting the outer on the driver side out. I tried to save it by putting a nut onto the stud coming out of the knuckle and hitting that instead of a threaded stud. I stripped the nut and mushroomed the stud before it even budged. I finally got a pickle fork and had to bludgeon it almost all the way to the hilt to bust the end free. I started to dissect the rack, saved the one good bellow, and looked closely at the teeth on the rack itself. It looks as if whoever owned this car before parked next to a curb and tried to turn the wheels to lock. The teeth on the middle of the rack (and I imagine all the way around the pinion gear to) are all chewed up and uneven. I'm willing to bet that that is what busted the seals inside as well. I didn't know how to remove the pinion gear, so I just stopped there, but not before noticing something kind of particular. I had the rack turned upside down and saw a number 54 etched into the machine face. I'm willing to bet that the internals for the LHD and RHD are virtually the same! If not, I might just be taking someone elses advice and turning a LHD rack upside down and beating some makeshift mounts into submission to hold it at the necessary angle. Cheaper that buying a remanned $550 part...
  4. You should be fine. The shocks on the legos and outbacks are all the same and will fit a 17" rim with 205/50s. Barely. Ricearu had a set on his lego and the rubbed a little. You can't go any larger though because the spring seat on the strut itself will contact the tire. Sti struts are spaced different, so you can go 18" with rubberbands for tires on those.
  5. EJ205? is that a typo? I could understand a set of 25 heads. Kinda like putting a set of chevy 305 heads on a 350 block, but in reverse. I have the postal 2.2 in mine, and from what ricearu has told me, it is a bit of a bastard motor. It is a gen 2 non-interference motor. It only has about 112k on it. Do you think that it would be ok to boost it? Anyways, with the right internals, you can boost anything as much as you want. There's diesel pulling competitions where the motors are boosting 135-150psi! I actually agree with the higher comp boost idea though. Subies are kinda fat and need the low end torque to get everything going.
  6. I can testify to the tranny death. Once reverse goes, fourth is next. Overdrive goes with it too. Then it just gets worse as time goes by. start lookin'. By the time you find it and have it ready, it'll be time.
  7. Ummmm..... You shouldn't have to drill a single thing for a 25 to 25 swap/replacement, especially if both motors came out of OBD2 USDM cars. If there is a plastic cover anywhere on the outside of the motor that isn't cracked or broken, then it shouldn't matter what material it is. And thirdly, ANY decent and honest mechanic will guarantee the work that they do. It sounds to me like he might be trying to swindle you out of a grand. IMHO, people like that are the reason that honest garage/back yard mechanics, or just mechanics in general get a bad rap.
  8. I used to have a business polishing out headlights, and I can tell you that even if it doesn't really look hazed or cloudy, it very well could be. I did the lights on my 95 lego wagon and was amazed at how clear they came out. Granted, my lights were night shaded (friggin ricer previous owners!), and the lights are misaligned to hell and back. I do agree though. The lights themselves do suck. If I were to do a swap, I personally would want to do a bug-eye front end swap. But before you do a swap, just wet-sand one down with sand paper and work your way up to the finer grits until you can polish it out with compound, then compare. You might be surprised. Other than that, HIDs. I'm gonna put some 3k yellows on mine.
  9. Really? All lights on the vehicle have to work in VA? That's just friggin stupid! I'm an inspector in Texas, and all that has to work are the markers, low/high beams, and brake lights. You can have ANYTHING on your vehicle just so long as it meets the base criteria. The only real stipulation on the lights is that there can't be any coatings on them, so no night shades or red tape. I personally would ask the inspector to show me in the book (because every inspector in every state has to have a book of laws and regulations to verify anything) where it says that they have to work. If you can't get the switch to go, are there any restrictions on a manual electrical override (i.e. a switch by the shifter)? I know you can do that down here, but I'm not so sure over there....
  10. STOP POKING HOLES IN MY LOGIC!!!!!! Although, that would be interesting......
  11. Just an update. I got the sti struts and the bolted right in! now the car has a bit of wagon sag, but still looks so much sexier! Here's a link to a thread w/ pics. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=116142&page=5
  12. To be fair, I kinda lost count of which one this is. I just got it because I know it will run forever, and it's just plain weird! Just ordered the steering rebuild from rockauto a half hour ago, and I'm about to paypal punchthefish $100 for a rear spoiler once he replies to my email. This should be a really fun car when I get done building it. It's good to hear from you man (returns hi 5). What's been goin' on?
  13. Thanks for the info. I'm going to pick up the strut assemblies off a 50k sti next sunday.
  14. It's a good thing that this car is totally worth the massive amount of work it needs. I'm going about an hour north next sunday to pick up a set of sti struts for $100 to replace the BLOWN set currently on the car. It should look so much sexier dropped a bit. I was thinking about picking up a set of scion tc six twin spoke wheels and painting them a gloss black, paint the car flat black, and when I get the brake conversion, paint all the calipers sti pink. What do you think?
  15. Yeah..... I pay out of my ears for insurance. I'm only 21, but full coverage for my Dodge would cost my over $450 a month. My freaking payments are only $330! I might as well buy another one, park it, and when (if) I total it, pay the other cars repairs and pull out the other truck! That's why I went with Uunta's insurance. I pay $86 a month for a piece of paper that SAYS I'm covered and keeps the cops off my bumper. It SUCKS!!!!!
  16. I was actually wanting to keep the stock steering wheel and dangle a few wires out of the back after I replace it with a racing wheel so my passengers can have some fun! What do you think?
  17. Anyone? I'm a bit of a soob noob, but I do know that soobs will last forever regardless of what kind of owners drive and abuse them. I just want to do it smart instead of experimenting like I was planning with my '84 rx7.
  18. Sell it? Are you crazy?! (No offense). I LOVE my weird cars! I bought it for the ej20r swap. Cost effectiveness, and fun with staring people = some of the best fun on four wheels!
  19. I used wet sandpaper starting from 600 grit (and alot of it. There was ALOT of paint there!), then just stepped it up once I saw clear. After that, I used my orbital(important tidbit there. If you use a random orbit, you will be there for hours.) Buffer and a decent wool pad on a somewhat high speed and polished until crystal clear. I got a quote from my ins company, and they said that it would cost an additional $12 to insure the car. Didn't even ask any specifics of the car. It also helps (i guess) that I have the no coverage cheapest insurance company in Texas that charges me $86 for a sheet of paper saying that I'm insured.
  20. I just got my 95 postal wagon, and I want to slam it to the ground and replace the shocks with tokicos, but I can't find anything that specifically lists my car on ebay...... It's all for the newer imprezas. I was just wondering what springs and shocks would swap over from both old and new soobs so that I don't get impatient and order the wrong parts. Thanks!
  21. What's goin' on? I just bought a 1995 subaru legacy L postal wagon for $500, and figured the forums could help where it is needed (and there's alot needed!). I'm new to the boards, and a little gray when it comes to soobs, but I'm not new to them and their many quirks. I've had all my friends who owned subarus (and still do mind you) swear by them and haven't had them hardley ever break. I know how to tear into a project, and so does ricearu. .....Yeah.......I live with the guy. I'll be posting alot more, but for now, I'm goin to bed. Later!
