  1. When I first looked into the top it did not have any oil, but after learning about the carb I did add the correct amount of thin oil to the top, and nothing really changed.
  2. Any carb recomendations out there? Probably going to go with a sidedraft Weber, as it would help with packaging. My dad has a ton of experience with Holley's, but the downdraft setup would make plumbing difficult. Plan for carb choice is to figure out max CFM of turbo, and then size a carb that can handle that. Sort of hard finding a chart/data for the turbo, IHI RHB6. Going to contact company for info on it.
  3. If your going to be out wheeling, it might be beneficial to add a rubber sleeve over the braided brake lines to help keep dirt/dust from working it's way into them. Very nice looking wagon!
  4. Actually, decided to start a new thread in members rides about the car. Seemed more fitting than updating this one.
  5. For any background info on the car, please refer to the "Quatro San Lives" thread in the older generation forum. I just updated that thread, but decided that was silly and started a new one here to document my work. Finally uploaded some photos/video. These were taken about two months ago, and since then I haven't had a chance to work on the car because of work. But, for starters, here's a video of it running! (Super rich thanks to that goofy SU) And now for the photos. ^Current hiding place/storage. In the process of moving so just being stored at a friends place for now. ^Rats nest under dash has been cleaned up. Surprisingly the stock harness wasn't hacked into, just a ton more wires were added for various experiments over the years. ^Before cleaning up under hood. Removed the remains of what appeared to be a primitive DAQ system, don't really know what it logged (except fuel pressure/flow), but I saved it as I don't throw anything away. ^The casuse of most of my problems. The SU Carb, apparently it came stock on MG's for a few years. It's flooding out the engine constantly whenever throttle is applied. And the flooding appears to be coming from the choke enrichment circuit. Due to lack of parts/knowledge available for this carb, I would much prefer to swap to a Weber or Holley. Also open to any suggestions in this department, as I'm sure someone has turbo'd an EA81 before. ^Cracked water jacket on top of engine ^Sealed with JB Weld. First the crack was cut into a "V" that extends past both ends, then thoroughly cleaned and sealed. I know a lot of people think of JB Weld as a non structural "quick fix," as I used to be one of them. But while at school (composites engineering) I did a lot of epoxy testing, and surprisingly JB Weld held up great (sometimes even better) in heat/strength testing than lots of more expensive products. As I didn't have access to a TIG welder, this will do. There is a crack on the water jacket of the R cyl head, but that will be welded. And as always, looking for a driver/parts car '80s GL Hatch! I'd like to replace QS's hood/front fenders/front valence as they are all tweaked and in poor shape. And pretty much every body panel has been dented over the years (storage was not kind) so those will be replaced at some point. Also, the doors are rusted out like most every old GL. And it's missing a ton of little interior bits/exterior trim, etc. Feedback/advice is welcome!

  8. ^Cool, good to know. I was wondering where they found that. Recently I pulled the composite air dam off the front end, and am starting to plan out how to repair it. It's going to take a ton of time, but nothing I can't do (thanks to WWU's Plastics Engineering program). Also, anybody have a rust free (may be to much to ask for) GL Hatch in the PNW they are selling? I'm looking for one to use as a daily for awhile, then strip for QS. Motivated buyer, has cash, yadda yadda yadda
  9. Cool, I was wondering about door compatibility with Brats, since they are both two door I assumed they might work.
  10. ^ha, thanks. Still figuring out the terminology. Thanks for the info, going to follow up on the '86. I'm mainly concerned about sheet metal (ie fenders, doors, and the such) so this may work out.
  11. I'm looking for a parts car for my '82 GL 3 door hatch, and was wondering what (if anything) changed between the hatchbacks between '82 and for example, '86. I'm looking at my options, and I have come across an '86 GL 3 door hatch at a reasonable price, but don't know about parts compatibility.
  12. Hello, joined the forum a long time ago but haven't posted much, so probably should introduce myself. WWU vehicle research institute grad, spent many years building and driving Formula SAE race cars. All through college I drove a '96 Legacy which I spent my spare time machining parts for. Currently I'm trying to sell the legacy so I can put all my time/money into Quatro San, an '82 GL hatch I purchased from the school. This forum has been a great research tool, thanks!
  13. Well, I now own the Quatro San. I was a student at WWU for the past four years and graduated from VRI. While there I was heavily involved with the FSAE team. I've known of Quatro San the whole time I was up there, and when the school was going through it's recent liquidation trend I kept tabs on the status of the car and where it was going. When the car went up for sale I told my dad about it, and he purchased it as at the time I wasn't able to. Well now I bought it back off him and it's in the hands of a VRI alum! Long term plan for car: commuter. Caging it and racing it would be fun, and in the spirit of the car, but it has more value to me as a hopped up daily driver. Next step with the car is to purchase a carb that'll work with the turbo. The SU is a great design, just a pity it doesn't work well (at least it doesn't now). I'd like to swap a Weber in it, as I've seen them used on older Subaru's before. I'm open to any advice on turbo Subaru carbs. I'm also in the market for a GL hatch to use as a parts car for Quatro San, I've been looking but all I can find are rusted piles. I need non rusted doors, straight fenders, tons of random exterior trim bits, and pretty much a whole interior. Finding a running/driving would be great so I can commute in it while I yank the engine out Quatro San. Once the engine is done, then the swapping would occur. I'll try and keep the forum updated of the resurection as it progresses (I'll get fresh photos soon). Next step is a new (working) carb and hopefully another GL hatch, so if you know of either for sale let me know!
  14. The EJ22 (assuming that is the motor you are referencing with 2.2) is a non interference engine. You can sping the cam all day long with the piston at TDC and not cause any problems.
  15. I've got a '96 Outback (163,xxx miles) with a 5 speed manual, and have recently started having problems with second gear. I think my synchro for upshifting from 1st to 2nd may be going bad, as it grinds when trying to shift at any rpm higher than 2g. The part that confuses me though is that this only happens when the car is warmed up (as in when the car is cold there isn't any problem shifting into second). I'm guessing that the synchro is on edge, and once the tranny fluid heats up it thins which causes the grinding. I've read on here and other places that 2nd gear is notoriously weak, anybody else have this problem? The car isn't driven very hard as it's mainly a daily driver. Also I changed the tranny fluid (synthetic 75/90) when I bought the car six months ago. I'm thinking about swapping it with 80/90 to try and squeeze some more life out of it.
  16. Wondering if your used rally tires are still for sale. I'm interested and could pick them up as I'm not too far north of you. Thanks.
