  1. ^In the middle of deep clean. Found a bit more rust in the body, but nothing that's not fixable. ^Back together! ^Junkyard interior bits mostly swapped in. Looks better, but nowhere near nice. ^Mirrors from the yard really helped clean up the outside. Looking better... ^Yesterday's find for QS: Holley 670. Going to give this a shot!
  2. Thanks for more info and the photo! As far as title, since it was sold through state surplus I was issued title application paperwork, as it was never titled before. My title states that I am the first owner of the car. The dol people were quite confused! I tried to get the original plates to keep with the car, but unfortunately rules of surplus auction state that the original plates had to be kept/destroyed/something, either way they wouldn't let me have them. The spoiler is going to test my composte repair skills, glad to hear it may be from a camaro as a possible backup. I bugged VRI faculty for years about this car, as I gave four years of my life to that shop and watched QS decay over that time. On a shop purge they finally found the paperwork and put it up for public auction, no one bid against me so here it is!
  3. ^Leaving the storage area. Other than some new mouse poop under the hood, storage has been pretty nice to the car. ^Have to admit at this point it kind of looks like a giant pile of poo. ^And tonights progress. Did a lot of cleaning, fixed the hood hinges, and hung some panels for inspiration. Tomorrow going to roll the car back outside for a deep clean, then hang the new front end panels/plastic back on, re-do interior with junkyard replacement bits, finish removing A/C system from car, and decide next step for the cylinder hear repair (probably take to a machine shop). ^Engine as currently sits. I can't wait to work on this darn thing, no timing belts, no OHC, no blasted timing belt covers covering water pump, it looks like heaven!
  4. Is that last one a T body/chassis? Beautifully done! My obsession as well is balanced between Subaru's and Fords. '65 F-100 is what started the whole car game for me, the Subaru's make much...easier...daily drivers though!
  5. Update again, as this weekend the ball will begin rolling. I've been waiting to randomly come across parts for this, and that finally happened thanks to an '82 GL wagon at the pick n pull. Already bought a few parts off it (pass fender, turn signal lenses, some interior, rearview mirrors, etc), returning for other front fender/cowling/hood/skidplate/and more interior bits. Since my garage in Everett will then be packed with parts, I'll be trucking them all down to Tacoma this weekend to mount them all to QS. The whole front end should look real spiffy afterward! Also, if anyone has any info on this car I'm all ears. After tearing into the car, it definitely has many unique modifications, but nothing that is completely groundbreaking. Since it has a...well "clouded" history, I'd like to help put myths to rest and present facts on the car. I've heard tons of rumors, everything from "super rare factory sunroof," "super rare JDM seats," "it's a JDM import car," "car and driver test car that was then donated to the school," "jackie chan drove it," etc. I can reasonably say this is not Jackie Chan's movie car, but everything else is still up in the air, as this car has basically zero documentation. Also, my overall goal is still to turn this into a unique and kick butt daily driver. That's still a long way down the road, but at least the project is moving again. And parts donations (I can gladly trade beer or pay reasonable cash) are always accepted, like I need both doors (mine are rotted to heck), and a hatch (also rotted to heck on QS). The fenders/hood/cowling from the yard will help a ton, as the ones on QS show the neglect that can only be caused by 20 or so years of college kids beating on a car!
  6. I think your speaking of "Dr Injector." Great shop, I buy all my injectors through them. Very knowledgeable and helpful about anything fuel injector related.
  7. Is the water pump OEM? The stamped steel blades on the impeller tend to rust away over time. Mine did, and the symptoms were pretty close to yours.
  8. I did a bit of searching, but didn't come across much info on this. In my seemingly neverending (but getting closer!) quest to rid my EA82T of all coolant leaks, I think I found that my turbo may be seeping coolant. This would explain the coolant smell (as in turbo=hot, coolant seeping onto it=smell), and the fact that I still have coolant disappearing. Though after replacing intake gaskets/waterpump/etc the coolant loss rate has dropped drastically. Has anybody experienced a coolant leak from their turbo before? I was looking at rebuild kits, but they seem to only come with bearings and such, no seals. Any advice on sealing this sucker back up? I'm relatively new to turbo's and hoping for some advice before tearing into it.
  9. Well, hopefully QS will still end up a street car. I checked up on it recently in storage, it's still hiding well! Tested the efan switch tonight in a pot of boiling water, works well so I stripped out the toggle switch and wiring I added during my drive to LA. Cleans things up a bit more.
  10. Car is still up for sale, but in the meantime it has been performing flawlessly, as usual. Took it down to the Nameless Rally in Shelton this weekend. Great time, and really good stage viewing areas! The GL fit right in line in the spectator parking area: Also, if I still own the car late next month, I plan on entering the ORG rallycross at Chehalis with it. I've spectated at enough rallies, and it's about darn time I tried competitive driving in the dirt. I've done a ton of AutoX events in FSAE (formula styled) race cars on pavement, but the dirt looks like a hoot and a half. Only thing I would like to fix before then is to put some more negative camber in the front end, as the stock 1-2 degrees of positive is horrible for any kind of cornering. Any advice at adding camber adjustment is welcome, but I've also got a few ideas...
  11. Bead/media blaster. So, a sandblaster that uses glass beads/walnut shells/etc. Most any powdercoating shop can do this.
  12. When travelling between Seattle and Spokane, the Snoqualmie Pass area has some real nice USFS campgrounds. I would recommend the Salmon La Sac area or the Teanaway area. A few weeks ago my friend was "kindly asked to leave" by OR police for rebel camping on the coast...not like CA where you can pull off most anywhere unfortunately in my experience. Sounds like a great trip, HWY 1 between SF and WA is a spectacular drive.
  13. Try cross referencing with old WRX/Impreza parts. A lot will bolt right up/fit with a little work.
  14. First thing is first, like AKGhandi said, make sure you have it running like a swiss watch before you start going for "slightly" more power. I've owned mine for over six months now and it's only finally running well enough (after months of tinkering) now that I'd consider an intercooler/exhaust. Other than those two mods (and a few other minor things), I wouldn't touch it. As then it will probably explode and that's no fun. But a good running stock(ish) EA82T is fun!
  15. I would check the voltage output out of your alternator to make sure it's within spec. My voltage rectifier (regulator?) in my alternator went bad so it was sending 19V to the car, made my gauges go completely wonky. A new alternator fixed it, or you can rebuild the alternator and replace regulator, but the I remember the regulator being the same cost as a new alternator. This was on an '86 GL ea82T.
  16. Regarding your knock sensor, unplug it and see if the problem persists. Theoretically it doesn't have to be installed for the car to run, as all it does is pull timing when it senses a knock. Try unplugging the sensor by the bellhousing, probably don't unplug the whole knock control unit. Also, if your interested, I found this page very helpful when I was researching how EA82T knock sensors work, lots of good information: http://www.ausubaru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11260
  17. After some thought today, decided that since the car is now running better than ever (it loved the new plugs and filter) it's time to pass it on so someone else can enjoy it. Plus Quattro San keeps staring at me from under a tarp begging me to start working on it. So, for sale time! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/138521-1986-subaru-gl-hatch-ea82t/
  18. Decided to replace the plugs (haven't in the 15k+ miles I've owned the car, and who knows how long they've been in there) and fuel filter today. Car seems to love the new stuff, as it smoothed out the idle a bit more. Runs like a darn top now. After some further thought, I determined it's not running lean, just very worn out plugs. A few hundred miles then check again and I'll know for sure. And here's a photo of the engine bay post intake swap. Not quite entirely scrubbed clean, but getting there! Looks a million times better than when I bought it.
  19. Thanks, guess its a knock sensor then!
  20. Decided to pull the plugs today for a check, not too happy with what I found. Both passenger side plugs look a bit lean, while the driver side plugs look fine. Hmm...may be time to compression test it.
  21. Thanks. I was looking at a GL-10 at the local junkyard, which also had an EA82T, and it didn't seem to have this sensor. Seems odd that different generations came with/without a knock sensor.
  22. While poking around my engine bay, I found that the wiring to this sensor was severed. Problem is, I can't figure out what sensor it is. Going to be fixing it soon, just need to run to the junkyard to grab a connector off another EA82T and splice it in. It's the sensor circled in red. Behind intake, next to bell housing. Knock sensor?
  23. On my '86 GL I was able to remove radio and reach up behind that for that connector. If that doesn't work, try removing glove box. Shouldn't be too hard overall.
  24. Are those SU carbs your planning on putting on? How do you like tuning them?
