  1. My roommate and I need to replace the oil pan gasket on his 85' EA82 wagon, anybody got any tips, warnings, or thoughts on doing this under the car without pulling the engine?

The crossmember that the engine sits on will get in the way of the bolts on the rear of the oil pan. The engine mounts that connect to the crossmember will need to be undone, as well as the stabalizing mount that goes from the bell housing to the rear of the firewall. The engine will need to be jacked up a bit to get clearance to the bolts. Personally I have never changed the gasket while the engine was in the car... might be a headache.

  2. ^^^^^^

haven't tried it, but it makes sense. Basically you're modifying the link so that it doesn't automatically download the image when you click on it. When you view an image on fb you there is a link that says download. (On a windows-based computer, macs would be ctrl+click probably? don't feel like starting the virtual machine to find out) right-click and "copy link location" or similar. Then paste and remove the ?dl=1 at the end of the link..

cool, now that is a hotlink to the image on f.b, is there a way to make the f.b picture actually show up in the thread like a photobucket embed?

i know you do something along the lines of: [image] blahblahblah [/image]

some of my own stupid s**t is happening... the front end is shuddering on my brat when i am on the accelerator... the driver side cv boot is torn, could that be a part of it? nothing appears to be loose. Oh and its a gen 2, an '85... in case if there are any differences/specifics.

  3. I know how to use the forum, I just never get on here. I've been more active on here the past few days than I have been since I signed onto USMB. Was just wondering if there were some shortcuts, since I basically have a build thread on facebook in the form of a photo album. I don't feel like uploading 100+ pictures to my photobucket account that I haven't used in 2 years...

But I guess thats what I will do when I get time.

Back on topic: One time I was helping a lady on the street that was overheating, she happened to have a '88 dl wagon. After that was all sorted out, I looked under the car to see that her exaust manifolds were constructed out of flexible 2" metal dryer hosing.

  4. I am working on a contribution to the USMB that will allow users to upload images and return a url to paste into posts. I have a few hosting sites now, but will get ticked if I start serving a bunch of images all of a sudden. I will post a thread when I have this up.

In the mean time. you can use facebook. just have to copy the "download" link and paste it in. but be sure to remove the ?dl=1.

Thanks for the info. And yea, it would be awesome if this site had its own image hosting. I wonder why nobody thought of that before?

The ratchet handle made me lol :D

  5. Well...

The PO of my brat didn't rebuild the engine correctly, so when i got it; it had a thrown connecting rod  needless to say i had to get another engine to put in. All that is done with and it runs great

Now its just dealing with other random cosmetic stuff that went wrong while this guy had it... dents, scratches, the rattle can silver painted grill, running light driverside bumper blinker replacement... the list goes on zzz

Will be posting up a build thread soon. I just need to find a good image hosting site... Does facebook work for hosting images??

  6. I told you guys I would post pics when I could, so here goes:

The first two are my new car I was talking about, and the others are the brat that I sold. I'll get a pic or two of my '88 in here sometime later.

  7. Sorry to hear they're not in good shape. Do some searching. You can close those cracks with a ball-peen hammer/round punch. I did with mine and they're working great.

I would have fixed them, but I took the valves out to see how deep the crack went and the cracks go about an inch or so deep. Kinda close to a water port in the head.

I worked out a deal with the guy I got the engine from. I told him the motor was useless to me, and he had a bunch of spare parts, so I traded him back the motor for a rear hatch, two rear doors, exaust system, and steering collumn/assembly.

  8. I went to the pull a part, looking for heads. Tore apart four or five engines, all of which turned out to have overheated and cracked heads :-\

I looked around a little bit, and saw a '80 gl wagon sitting there. It still had the ea71 engine sitting in there, basically unmolested. Also it had the full grill (minus the third eye, of course someone snagged that) and headlight bezels. I really like the way the grill looks on the early 80's subes, so I snagged it and the headlight bezzels.

Maybe if i get a period correct subaru for the grill i'll put it on there, but until then I have a subaru nestolgic wall ornament. :D

  9. If you were buying an engine from me, I wouldn't let you rip it apart before handing over the cash...

Isn't it OK to run with those cracks anyway? they all crack like that..

I can see your point, I don't think I'd let anybody do the same to me either....

As for the cracks, it depends on how deep they go, and how long you're willing to run the car and then have to pull it all back out again to replace once they crack the rest of the way. Welding them is an option, but it would cost around $250 per head to be done correctly.

  10. I bought a new engine for my '86 Gl. I just wanted the heads, but the guy wanted to get rid of the whole engine. He wanted $125 for it all, so I didn't see any reason to not just take the whole thing. I get it home and start tearing it down to get to the heads, get the heads off, and i see cracks between the valves

So I basically made a $125 mistake, but its a mistake I sure wont make again... next time I'm in the same situation I'm dissassembling it right then and there, before I pay.

Anywho. I'm still looking for heads. My subi is an '86 stock carbed ea82 non turbo. I live in the Seattle, WA area. If anybody is trying to sell some good heads they should hit me up :)

  11. It just has to do with your post count. Mostly its there to keep the spammers and scammers from doing their dirty work here. I want to say its something like 10 or 15 legitimate posts.

    Oh yeah...welcome to the board.

Sweet, I'll just comment around on all the awesome stuff that people have done on this site :)

    Thanks for the welcome!

    You may edit your posts"

Does anybody know how long it will be until i can post attatchments?

At first i couldn't post threads or reply to them, but then i got the confirmation email etc etc... will i have to get another email or something?

  13. Hi i'm new to being a member of this forum, but have been following it as an outsider for a while now. I have a suber-project of my own going right now, and have drawn a lot of inspiring ideas from this website.

My current project is a 1986 Subaru GL wagon. Its 5 speed manual with dual range 4wd. The engine is all tore down and I'm in the process of getting some new heads for it. I just bought the car about a month ago and i'm finally getting into it now.

Before this car i had a '82 gl brat. I had it for a day and realized that it would be a lot more work than i was willing to do, so i sold it. It had the t-tops and 3rd eye and dual range 4wd, just like pretty much all the gl's. I was sad to see it go but i knew i was saving myself some headache.

My first car, and the car i still have besides my new one, is an '88 gl wagon. This one is just a 3 speed auto with push button 4wd.

I have quite a few engine tear downs under my belt, 1 ea81 teardown and rebuild, and about 4 or 5 ea82 teardown and rebuilds. My dad had an old ea81 wagon, and has had quite a few ea82 cars; hence the reason i have so much experience with these cars.

I live, eat, breathe subaru.

Once i figure this forum all out i'll be sure to post some pictures of all the cars.

Happy to be a part of this community :)

    -Chad
