GM alternator conversion
LostWater replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have pictures and a write up of this conversion. My hatch is not running, so I haven't felt comfortable posting yet. Here is what I found: Take a look at the subie wiring connector. It looks like a "T", with one spade perpendicular to the other spade. The GM connector has a clicker on it. Lay them down side by side. The clicker on the GM connector should face up. The straight up and down spade from the subie connector is the same as the left side of the GM connector. I just ran a jumper wire with male spade on one end and a female spade on the other to connect the subie connector to the GM alt. This way one doesn't have to cut the subie connector off. Press me for pictures and I may send them. BTW, I also ordered the conversion from JCTwitney and made mine 120 amp. I had ****vance test it when I was finished and it passed with flying colours. 10" fell Thursday night / afternoon here in the New River Valley. Got another 3" last night (Friday). Warmed up to 41 deg today. melted about 4" of the total. Its snowing right now again at 9:30 pm. The farm is yucky and I am unable to ride the tractor for a while, hrmph, well, I guess I could be in the gayrage working on some 360's. Mark

15 days to make a Brat inspection-ready. *gulp*
LostWater replied to Geiiga's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You can get a unit big enough to store it likely for ~$75 a month. I would look into that before I let them tow it or get MD safety inspection when in the end when you title it and tag it in KS, MD won't be able to do crap about it not having their inspection. Especially your complex. Its not required for you to have a MD inspection on a car titled and tagged anywhere else. Mark -
Tony, Does your wife drive the RX too? The only reason I ask, is that she would get bored at the farm otherwise. There is quite a bit to do in Christiansburg, Blacksburg, and Roanoke, but the farm would be boring to ladies. The hatch has some weird electrical problem going in. It kinda shorts out, wait a while, then it will try and turn over again. Is there a circuit breaker anywhere? does the starter get hot and shut the electrical system down? If I get it running, I have several pics and a write up to put up about the chevy 120 amp alt conversion. I will ask Karmit about plans for the weekend. Were you thinking just coming down one day? Diesel power is a necessary componet of my life. Not only is it needed to haul the horse trailer, it is useful in other ways as these pictures will demonstrate. We went to Bel Air MD this past weekend to deliver this BRAT I sold on Ebarf. After, we drove up to West Chester PA to get some 360's off of a nice guy who was getting out of the hobby. Out of the three, Likely I will only get enough to get 1 going good. Used 12 ft long 2x12 with ramp tops from Home Creepo. Each one at 5 ft long would be rated at 700 lbs. At 12 ft long, 44 inches tall, I needed to brace the middle of the boards to keep them from breaking. I used my Harbor freight hand winch bolted to a hook from an old strap, that was bolted to a piece of steel. This way, I could slip the winch on the headache rack, and also on the front of the trailer. Then it was a boatload of winching to get the first 360 in the back of the big red truck. The blu 360 went in the truck just fine. Then it was time to prepare to hook the trailer back up and load the other 2. The second 360 was totally locked up. The brakes were bad and it was just about a basket case. We winched it into the front of the trailer and angled it to see if we can get the other on back. Creatively it would have worked. We decided everything would ride safer if we just cut the basket case in half. By doing that, we still preserved all the good body panels. It only took like 10 minutes to cut it in half. Then we just put the two pieces together and pulled it sideways in the front of the trailer That gave me an idea that I could just shorten this one if I wanted to make something neat. It would have no doors in that scenario, but with the fiberglass top removed, one could get in and out of it from the top and back and use a canvas top. Likely, it will only be a donor car. We continued to load the last of the trio Then we had to strap everything down and make it secure. The strapping job took a while, but everything secured just fine. With the tailgate down, I was worried about taking corners too tight, thinking it would scrape the trailerjack, but that stinking truck is so high that my worries were not realized. We were able to drive home at the speedlimit (65-70) and on I-81 in VA I was able to go 75. I-81 is in much better shape in VA than it is in PA,MD, and WV. It also is much better than I-76 in PA where we had to go slower because of the condition of the road. It was a good trip, but I have to wait until this weekend until my twin is in town to unload it all. So that keeps the big red truck out of service for a week. That is of no matter anyways as me and my wife carpool most days anyways because our schedules are compatible. If I ever get my hatch running again, then the big red truck will only be used for firewood, the horse trailer, and special things like this. Now, when will I start these projects?? Mark

harbor Freight sale on winches
LostWater replied to subarubrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a handwinch, with 20 ft of cable, I made up a hook to fit under the lip of my headache rack or the trailer front. Took a crapload of cranking to get a 360 with locked up brakes onto the F250 bed, and again another crapload of cranking to get each of 2 more onto the trailer bed. I will post pics of the truck with all 360's on it likely tomorrow. Mark -

I think the classic looking AMC Ramblers stopped just after 64, then they all looked like crappy american muscle cars. Was that one classic, did it sell? Thanks, Mark -

ea81 oil pump question..
LostWater replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I bought an oem subaru oil pump from thepartsbin.com and put that on my lifted brat three years ago (now michael keck's brat). Then the pump only cost me like $45. I hope that is still the case. Check them out. I broke my old pump getting it out, their mounting surface is aluminum and pretty flimsy, so be careful with your puller. Mark -
the dealer strikes agian.. bastards..
LostWater replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Someone on the board more than three years ago made some mounts outa urethane and heavy wire and steel. I gotta set from him for like $20 but never installed them. They are in my basement somewhere, but, you saw the condition of my basement, they could be anywhere... Anyways, if we could find them we could model that and make some more. Urethane is a much better material than the stock rubber. All the big trucks use urethane blocks rather than rubber. Later, Mark -
anyone want this pile in my yard?
LostWater replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Tony, you can get a dual range tranny fer cheap. You know what I see here???? An oppourtunity....!! Why?? Now is the time to do the 5 speed dual range swap. I want to do it sometime on mine, so I would be willing to help you out getting everything figured out. A yard down here in Roanoke offered to put a ea82 wagon on a rack and sell me everything I wanted for the tranny conversion (tranny, clutch, pressure plate, shifters, driveshaft) for $300, and, they would have a guy take everything off while I was there. He told me he would let me take the whole wagon outa there for $400, and do it on my own time, but, heck, $300 for everything needed and all I have to do is figure it all out and put in my hatch. The reason I am telling you this is because for just a transmission, it is not worth giving up this hatch. Putting a lift in is no easy chore, and for what you paid for the hatch with the lift, if you had to replace the engine and tranny, you are still not out much. Come down here and I will give you that 4x4 single range tranny outa that wagon you got the engine from. At least that could get you going for a while. Don't give up............ (p.s, i could come up there with my trailer if you really wanted out of the project, even as early as the weekend) Mark -
It's Alive, It's Alive!!!
LostWater replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Tony, I am glad that engine worked out for you. That car sat for at least four years that I had it, and probably a couple more from where I got it. That goes to show you how bombproof the ea-81 engine is. You did all this without a shop manual too. You are a pretty good shadetree mechanic. And you chose a good weekend. I might be in for a snow travel as I am about 3 hours from you guys up there. Later, Mark -
The ammeter has two probes and three holes. Obviously, the com hole is the black probe(ground). There is a hole for regular testing, I think it says V and ohms and there is another that has a {10 A} above it. Is that the shunt setting? How to use that? Thanks a bunch,

The funny thing is, I really have no idea on how to use it to check for drain. Can someone give me the procedure? Thanks,

Here is the issue: In my 86 EA81 hatch, I have been having a weird electrical problem for some time. The battery either has been having a fast discharge, over two days it is dead, or, not enough voltage is delivered while in operation, i.e. the voltmeter in the car slowly drops down like the alt is not charging at all. Took alt out, took it to advance, they checked, it is good. I went ahead and setup my Delco 105 amp conversion and installed that anyways. I will post pics of that seperately. Some procedures I have done: is my battery charger only supposed to put out 10 volts when tested with my digital voltmeter? The battery puts out 3.4 volts according to the meter. When I hook the battery charger up to the battery (still in car), when I test the posts with the voltmeter, it shows 3.4 volts. Do I have a short somewhere? Is my battery charger bad? how to check for short? Not even enough juice comes in for any dash lights. Where to turn next? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch.
